Laparoscopic versus open colorectal resection for cancer and polyps: A cost-effectiveness study
Methods: Participants were recruited in 2006-2007 in a district general hospital in the south of England; those with a diagnosis of cancer or polyps were included in the analysis. Quality of life data were collected using EQ-5D, on alternate days after surgery for 4 weeks. Costs per patient, from a National Health Service perspective (in British pounds, 2006) comprised the sum of operative, hospital, and community costs. Missing data were filled using multiple imputation methods. The difference in mean quality adjusted life years and costs between surgery groups were estimated simultaneously using a multivariate regression model applied to 20 imputed datasets. The probability that laparoscopic surgery is cost-effective compared to open surgery for a given societal willingness-to-pay threshold is illustrated using a cost-effectiveness acceptability curve
Adaptive high-order finite element solution of transient elastohydrodynamic lubrication problems
This article presents a new numerical method to solve transient line contact elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL) problems. A high-order discontinuous Galerkin (DG) finite element method is used for the spatial discretization, and the standard Crank-Nicolson method is employed to approximate the time derivative. An h-adaptivity method is used for grid adaptation with the time-stepping, and the penalty method is employed to handle the cavitation condition.
The roughness model employed here is a simple indentation, which is located on the upper surface. Numerical results are presented comparing the DG method to standard finite difference (FD) techniques. It is shown that micro-EHL features are captured with far fewer degrees of freedom than when using low-order FD methods
National Evaluation of the Capacity Building Programme in English Local Government: Evaluation of the National Programmes: Annex 2: Evaluation of the National Programmes
The report is one of a series of outputs from the national evaluation of the CBP, being undertaken by a team of researchers at the Policy Research Institute (PRI) at Leeds Metropolitan University and the Cities Research Unit at the University of West of England. The Capacity Building Programme for local government was launched in 2003 as a joint Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) / Local Government Association (LGA) initiative to support capacity building and improvement activities within local authorities in England. The evaluation of the Capacity Building Programme has been underway since late 2004. A scoping phase was conducted until May 2005, including a short evaluation of the Pilot Programmes. The main phase of the evaluation commenced in September 2005 and encompassed four main phases (see Section 1.3: p10)
Trombe walls with nanoporous aerogel insulation applied to UK housing refurbishments
There is an opportunity to improve the efficiency of passive Trombe walls and active solar air collectors by replacing their conventional glass covers with lightweight polycarbonate panels filled with nanoporous aerogel insulation. This study investigates the thermal performance, energy savings, and financial payback period of passive Aerogel Trombe walls applied to the existing UK housing stock. Using parametric modeling, a series of design guidance tables have been generated, providing estimates of the energy savings and overheating risk associated with applying areas of Trombe wall to four different house types across the UK built to six notional construction standards. Calculated energy savings range from 183 kWh/m2/year for an 8 m2 system retrofitted to a solid walled detached house to 62 kWh/m2/year for a 32 m2 system retrofitted to a super insulated flat. Predicted energy savings from Trombe walls up to 24 m2 are found to exceed the energy savings from external insulation across all house types and constructions. Small areas of Trombe wall can provide a useful energy contribution without creating a significant overheating risk. Investigating bacteriophages targeting the opportunistic pathogen Acinetobacter baumannii
The multi-drug resistance of the opportunistic pathogen Acinetobacter baumannii is of growing concern, with many clinical isolates proving to be resistant to last resort as well as front line antibiotic treatments. The use of bacteriophages is an attractive alternative to controlling and treating this emerging nosocomial pathogen. In this study, we have investigated bacteriophages collected from hospital wastewater in Thailand and we have explored their activity against clinical isolates of A. baumannii. Bacteriophage vB_AbaM_PhT2 showed 28% host range against 150 multidrug resistant (MDR) isolates and whole genome sequencing did not detect any known virulence factors or antibiotic resistance genes. Purified vB_AbaM_PhT2 samples had endotoxin levels below those recommended for preclinical trials and were not shown to be directly cytotoxic to human cell lines in vitro. The treatment of human brain and bladder cell lines grown in the presence of A. baumannii with this bacteriophage released significantly less lactate dehydrogenase compared to samples with no bacteriophage treatment, indicating that vB_AbaM_PhT2 can protect from A. baumannii induced cellular damage. Our results have also indicated that there is synergy between this bacteriophage and the end line antibiotic colistin. Coupling between static friction force and torque for a tripod
If a body is resting on a flat surface, the maximal static friction force
before motion sets in is reduced if an external torque is also applied. The
coupling between the static friction force and static friction torque is
nontrivial as our studies for a tripod lying on horizontal flat surface show.
In this article we report on a series of experiments we performed on a tripod
and compare these with analytical and numerical solutions. It turns out that
the coupling between force and torque reveals information about the microscopic

Rolling friction of a viscous sphere on a hard plane
A first-principle continuum-mechanics expression for the rolling friction
coefficient is obtained for the rolling motion of a viscoelastic sphere on a
hard plane. It relates the friction coefficient to the viscous and elastic
constants of the sphere material. The relation obtained refers to the case when
the deformation of the sphere is small, the velocity of the sphere is
much less than the speed of sound in the material and when the characteristic
time is much larger than the dissipative relaxation times of the
viscoelastic material. To our knowledge this is the first ``first-principle''
expression of the rolling friction coefficient which does not contain empirical

Friction Laws for Elastic Nano-Scale Contacts
The effect of surface curvature on the law relating frictional forces F with
normal load L is investigated by molecular dynamics simulations as a function
of surface symmetry, adhesion, and contamination. Curved, non-adhering, dry,
commensurate surfaces show a linear dependency, F proportional to L, similar to
dry flat commensurate or amorphous surfaces and macroscopic surfaces. In
contrast, curved, non-adhering, dry, amorphous surfaces show F proportional to
L^(2/3) similar to friction force microscopes. In our model, adhesive effects
are most adequately described by the Hertz plus offset model, as the
simulations are confined to small contact radii. Curved lubricated or
contaminated surfaces show again different behavior; details depend on how much
of the contaminant gets squeezed out of the contact. Also, it is seen that the
friction force in the lubricated case is mainly due to atoms at the entrance of

The Role of Solid Friction in the Sedimentation of Strongly Attractive Colloidal Gels
We study experimentally and theoretically the sedimentation of gels made of
strongly aggregated colloidal particles, focussing on the long time behavior,
when mechanical equilibrium is asymptotically reached. The asymptotic gel
height is found to vary linearly with the initial height, a finding in stark
contrast with a recent study on similar gels [Manley \textit{et al.} 2005
\textit{Phys. Rev. Lett.} \textbf{94} 218302]. We show that the asymptotic
compaction results from the balance between gravity pull, network elasticity,
and solid friction between the gel and the container walls. Based on these
ingredients, we propose a simple model to account for the dependence of the
height loss on the initial height and volume fraction. As a result of our
analysis, we show that the static friction coefficient between the gel and the
container walls strongly depends on volume fraction: the higher the volume
fraction, the weaker the solid friction. This nonintuitive behavior is

A combined approach for comparative exoproteome analysis of Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis
Background: Bacterial exported proteins represent key components of the host-pathogen interplay. Hence, we
sought to implement a combined approach for characterizing the entire exoproteome of the pathogenic
bacterium Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis, the etiological agent of caseous lymphadenitis (CLA) in sheep and
goats.
Results: An optimized protocol of three-phase partitioning (TPP) was used to obtain the C. pseudotuberculosis
exoproteins, and a newly introduced method of data-independent MS acquisition (LC-MSE) was employed for
protein identification and label-free quantification. Additionally, the recently developed tool SurfG+ was used for in
silico prediction of sub-cellular localization of the identified proteins. In total, 93 different extracellular proteins of
C. pseudotuberculosis were identified with high confidence by this strategy; 44 proteins were commonly identified
in two different strains, isolated from distinct hosts, then composing a core C. pseudotuberculosis exoproteome.
Analysis with the SurfG+ tool showed that more than 75% (70/93) of the identified proteins could be predicted as
containing signals for active exportation. Moreover, evidence could be found for probable non-classical export of
most of the remaining proteins.
Conclusions: Comparative analyses of the exoproteomes of two C. pseudotuberculosis strains, in addition to
comparison with other experimentally determined corynebacterial exoproteomes, were helpful to gain novel
insights into the contribution of the exported proteins in the virulence of this bacterium. The results presented
