HST and UKIRT imaging observations of z~1 6C radio galaxies - II. Galaxy morphologies and the alignment effect
(abridged) Powerful radio galaxies often display enhanced optical/UV emission
regions, elongated and aligned with the radio jet axis. The aim of this series
of papers is to separately investigate the effects of radio power and redshift
on the alignment effect, together with other radio galaxy properties. In this
second paper, we present a deeper analysis of the morphological properties of
these systems, including both the host galaxies and their surrounding aligned
emission. The host galaxies of our 6C subsample are well described as de
Vaucouleurs ellipticals, with typical scale sizes of ~10kpc. This is comparable
to the host galaxies of low-z radio sources of similar powers, and also the
more powerful 3CR sources at the same redshift. The contribution of nuclear
point source emission is also comparable, regardless of radio power. The 6C
alignment effect is remarkably similar to that seen around more powerful 3CR
sources at the same redshift in terms of extent and degree of alignment with
the radio source axis, although it is generally less luminous. The bright,
knotty features observed in the case of the z~1 3CR sources are far less
frequent in our 6C subsample; neither do we observe such strong evidence for
evolution in the strength of the alignment effect with radio source size/age.
However, we do find a very strong link between the most extreme alignment
effects and emission line region properties indicative of shocks, regardless of
source size/age or power. In general, the 6C alignment effect is still
considerably stronger than that seen around lower redshift galaxies of similar

Compact radio sources and jet-driven AGN feedback in the early Universe: Constraints from integral-field spectroscopy
To investigate the impact of radio jets during the formation epoch of their
massive host galaxies, we present an analysis of two massive, log(M_stel/
M_sun)~10.6 and 11.3, compact radio galaxies at z=3.5, TNJ0205+2242 and
TNJ0121+1320. Their small radio sizes (R<= 10 kpc) are most likely a sign of
youth. We compare their radio properties and gas dynamics with those in well
extended radio galaxies at high redshift, which show strong evidence for
powerful, jet-driven outflows of significant gas masses (M 10^9-10 M_sun). Our
analysis combines rest-frame optical integral-field spectroscopy with existing
radio imaging, CO emission line spectra, and rest-frame UV spectroscopy.
[OIII]5007 line emission is compact in both galaxies and lies within the region
defined by the radio lobes. For TNJ0205+2242, the Ly-alpha profile narrows
significantly outside the jet radius, indicating the presence of a quiescent
halo. TNJ0121+1320 has two components separated by ~10 kpc and a velocity
offset of ~300 km s^-1. If motions are gravitational, this implies a dynamical
mass of 2x10^11 M_sun for the more massive, radio-loud component. The dynamical
mass, molecular gas mass measured from the CO line emission, and radio
luminosity of these two compact radio galaxies imply that compact radio sources
may well develop large-scale, energetic outflows as observed in extended radio
galaxies, with the potential of removing significant fractions of the ISM from
the host galaxy. The absence of luminous emission line gas extending beyond the
radio emission in these sources agrees with the observed timescales and outflow
rates in extended radio galaxies, and adds further evidence that the energetic,
large-scale outflows observed in extended radio sources (Nesvadba et al. 2006)
are indeed the result of influence of the radio jet.Comment: A&A accepte
CENSORS: A Combined EIS-NVSS Survey Of Radio Sources. I. Sample definition, radio data and optical identifications
A new sample of radio sources, with the designated name CENSORS (A Combined
EIS-NVSS Survey Of Radio Sources), has been defined by combining the NRAO VLA
Sky Survey (NVSS) at 1.4 GHz with the ESO Imaging Survey (EIS) Patch D, a 3 by
2 degree region of sky centred at 09 51 36.0, -21 00 00 (J2000). New radio
observations of 199 NVSS radio sources with NVSS flux densities S(1.4GHz) >
7.8mJy are presented, and compared with the EIS I-band imaging observations
which reach a depth of I~23; optical identifications are obtained for over
two-thirds of the ~150 confirmed radio sources within the EIS field. The radio
sources have a median linear size of 6 arcseconds, consistent with the trend
for lower flux density radio sources to be less extended. Other radio source
properties, such as the lobe flux density ratios, are consistent with those of
brighter radio source samples. From the optical information, 30-40% of the
sources are expected to lie at redshifts z >~ 1.5.
One of the key goals of this survey is to accurately determine the high
redshift evolution of the radio luminosity function. These radio sources are at
the ideal flux density level to achieve this goal; at redshifts z~2 they have
luminosities which are around the break of the luminosity function and so
provide a much more accurate census of the radio source population at those
redshifts than the existing studies of extreme, high radio power sources. Other
survey goals include investigating the dual--population unification schemes for
radio sources, studying the radio luminosity dependence of the evolution of
radio source environments, and understanding the radio power dependence of the

How do women prepare for pregnancy? Preconception experiences of women attending antenatal services and views of health professionals

Methods - Cross-sectional questionnaire survey of pregnant women attending three maternity services in London about knowledge and uptake of preconception care; including a robust measure of pregnancy planning, and phone interviews with a range of health care professionals.
Main results - We recruited 1173/1288 (90%) women, median age of 32 years. 73% had clearly planned their pregnancy, 24% were ambivalent and only 3% of pregnancies were unplanned. 51% of all women and 63% of those with a planned pregnancy took folic acid before pregnancy. 21% of all women reported smoking and 61% reported drinking alcohol in the 3 months before pregnancy; 48% of smokers and 41% of drinkers reduced or stopped before pregnancy. The 51% of all women who reported advice from a health professional before becoming pregnant were more likely to adopt healthier behaviours before pregnancy [adjusted odds ratios for greatest health professional input compared with none were 2.34 (95% confidence interval 1.54–3.54) for taking folic acid and 2.18 (95% CI 1.42–3.36) for adopting a healthier diet before pregnancy]. Interviews with 20 health professionals indicated low awareness of preconception health issues, missed opportunities and confusion about responsibility for delivery of preconception care.
Significance of the findings - Despite a high level of pregnancy planning, awareness of preconception health among women and health professionals is low, and responsibility for providing preconception care is unclear. However, many women are motivated to adopt healthier behaviours in the preconception period, as indicated by halving of reported smoking rates in this study. The link between health professional input and healthy behaviour change before pregnancy is a new finding that should invigorate strategies to improve awareness and uptake of pre-pregnancy health care, and bring wider benefits for public health.Department of Healt
Toward Human-Carnivore Coexistence: Understanding Tolerance for Tigers in Bangladesh
Fostering local community tolerance for endangered carnivores, such as tigers (Panthera tigris), is a core component of many conservation strategies. Identification of antecedents of tolerance will facilitate the development of effective tolerance-building conservation action and secure local community support for, and involvement in, conservation initiatives. We use a stated preference approach for measuring tolerance, based on the ‘Wildlife Stakeholder Acceptance Capacity’ concept, to explore villagers’ tolerance levels for tigers in the Bangladesh Sundarbans, an area where, at the time of the research, human-tiger conflict was severe. We apply structural equation modeling to test an a priori defined theoretical model of tolerance and identify the experiential and psychological basis of tolerance in this community. Our results indicate that beliefs about tigers and about the perceived current tiger population trend are predictors of tolerance for tigers. Positive beliefs about tigers and a belief that the tiger population is not currently increasing are both associated with greater stated tolerance for the species. Contrary to commonly-held notions, negative experiences with tigers do not directly affect tolerance levels; instead, their effect is mediated by villagers’ beliefs about tigers and risk perceptions concerning human-tiger conflict incidents. These findings highlight a need to explore and understand the socio-psychological factors that encourage tolerance towards endangered species. Our research also demonstrates the applicability of this approach to tolerance research to a wide range of socio-economic and cultural contexts and reveals its capacity to enhance carnivore conservation efforts worldwide

Even if the freedom to suicide is part of our human existence, about 90% of all suicides occur in the context of psychiatric disorders and thus in states of limited power of judgment. Depressive disorders represent the most frequent cause for suicides. Thus, optimization of medical care for depressive patients is one of the most promising strategies to prevent suicides. In the context of the `Nuremberg Alliance Against Depression' it came to an obvious reduction of suicidal acts compared to a baseline year and compared to the control region of Wurzburg. The reduction could be reached by a cooperation with GPs, multipliers such as teachers, priests, geriatric caregivers and the media, through intensive public relations work and through support of self help activities. This approach is carried forward within the Germany-wide `Alliance Against Depression' and within the `European Alliance Against Depression' ( EAAD) which is funded by the European Commission. In the last part of the article the suicide- preventive, but also the possible suicide-inducing effect of antidepressants is discussed
Engaging teenagers in improving their health behaviours and increasing their interest in science (Evaluation of LifeLab Southampton): study protocol for a cluster randomized controlled trial
BackgroundLifestyle and health behaviours are strongly linked to non-communicable disease risk, but modifying them is challenging. There is an increasing recognition that adolescence is an important time when lifestyle and health behaviours become embedded. Improving these in adolescents is important not only for their own health but also for that of their future children. LifeLab Southampton has been developed as a purpose-built classroom and laboratory in University Hospital Southampton. Secondary school students visit LifeLab to learn how childhood, adolescent and parental nutrition influences health, understand the impact of their lifestyle on their cardiovascular and metabolic health, and to inspire them with the excitement of research and future career possibilities in science. The LifeLab visit is part of a programme of work linked to the English National Curriculum. Pilot work has indicated that attitudes towards health can be changed by such LifeLab sessions. MethodsA cluster randomised controlled trial is being conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the LifeLab intervention, the primary outcome being a measurement of the change in nutrition, health and lifestyle literacy from before to after the LifeLab intervention. The LifeLab intervention comprises: professional development for the teachers involved, preparatory-lessons for the school students, delivered in school, a hands-on practical day at LifeLab including a ‘Meet the Scientist’ session, post-visit lessons delivered in school and the opportunity to participate in the annual LifeLab Schools’ Conference. This study aims to recruit approximately 2,500 secondary school students aged 13-14 years from 32 schools (the clusters) from Southampton and neighbouring areas. Participating schools will be randomised to control or intervention groups. The intervention will be run over two academic school years, with baseline questionnaire data collected from students at participating schools at the start of the academic year and follow- up questionnaire data collected approximately 12 months later.Evaluation of LifeLab is a cluster randomised controlled trial (ISRCTN71951436, registered 25th March 2015), funded by the British Heart Foundation (PG/14/33/30827)
Resolving the dynamical mass of a z~1.3 QSO host galaxy using SINFONI and Laser Guide Star assisted Adaptive Optics
Recent studies of the tight scaling relations between the masses of
supermassive black holes and their host galaxies have suggested that in the
past black holes constituted a larger fraction of their host galaxies' mass.
However, these arguments are limited by selection effects and difficulties in
determining robust host galaxy masses at high redshifts. Here we report the
first results of a new, complementary diagnostic route: we directly determine a
dynamical host galaxy mass for the z=1.3 luminous quasar J090543.56+043347.3
through high-spatial-resolution (0.47", 4kpc FWHM) observations of the host
galaxy gas kinematics over 30x40 kpc using ESO/VLT/SINFONI with LGS/AO.
Combining our result of M_dyn = 2.05+1.68_0.74 x 10^11 M_sun (within a radius
5.25 +- 1.05 kpc) with M_BH,MgII = 9.02 \pm 1.43 x 10^8 M_sun, M_BH,Halpha =
2.83 +1.93-1.13 x 10^8 M_sun, we find that the ratio of black hole mass to host
galaxy dynamical mass for J090543.56+043347.3 matches the present-day relation
for M_BH vs. M_Bulge,Dyn, well within the IR scatter, deviating at most a
factor of two from the mean. J090543.56+043347.3 displays clear signs of an
ongoing tidal interaction and of spatially extended star formation at a rate of
50-100 M_sun/yr, above the cosmic average for a galaxy of this mass and
redshift. We argue that its subsequent evolution may move J090543.56+043347.3
even closer to the z=0 relation for M_BH vs. M_Bulge,Dyn. Our results support
the picture where any substantive evolution in these relations must occur prior
to z~1.3. Having demonstrated the power of this modelling approach we are
currently analyzing similar data on seven further objects to better constrain

Evidence for powerful AGN winds at high redshift: Dynamics of galactic outflows in radio galaxies during the "Quasar Era"
AGN feedback now appears as an attractive mechanism to resolve some of the
outstanding problems with the "standard" cosmological models, in particular
those related to massive galaxies. To directly constrain how this may influence
the formation of massive galaxies near the peak in the redshift distribution of
powerful quasars, z~2, we present an analysis of the emission-line kinematics
of 3 powerful radio galaxies at z~2-3 (HzRGs) based on rest-frame optical
integral-field spectroscopy obtained with SINFONI on the VLT. HzRGs are among
the most massive galaxies, so AGN feedback may have a particularly clear
signature. We find evidence for bipolar outflows in all HzRGs, with kinetic
energies that are equivalent to 0.2% of the rest-mass of the supermassive black
hole. Velocity offsets in the outflows are ~800-1000 km s^-1 between the
blueshifted and redshifted line emission, FWHMs ~1000 km s^-1 suggest strong
turbulence. Ionized gas masses estimated from the Ha luminosity are of order
10^10 M_s, similar to the molecular gas content of HzRGs, underlining that
these outflows may indicate a significant phase in the evolution of the host
galaxy. The total energy release of ~10^60 erg during a dynamical time of ~10^7
yrs corresponds to about the binding energy of a massive galaxy. Geometry,
timescales and energy injection rates of order 10% of the kinetic energy flux
of the jet suggest that the outflows are most likely driven by the radio
source. The global energy density release of ~10^57 erg s^-1 Mpc^-3 may also
influence the subsequent evolution of the HzRG by enhancing the entropy and
pressure in the surrounding halo and facilitating ram-pressure stripping of gas
in satellite galaxies that may contribute to the subsequent mass assembly of

Exploring the conformational dynamics of alanine dipeptide in solution subjected to an external electric field: A nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulation
In this paper, we investigate the conformational dynamics of alanine
dipeptide under an external electric field by nonequilibrium molecular dynamics
simulation. We consider the case of a constant and of an oscillatory field. In
this context we propose a procedure to implement the temperature control, which
removes the irrelevant thermal effects of the field. For the constant field
different time-scales are identified in the conformational, dipole moment, and
orientational dynamics. Moreover, we prove that the solvent structure only
marginally changes when the external field is switched on. In the case of
oscillatory field, the conformational changes are shown to be as strong as in
the previous case, and non-trivial nonequilibrium circular paths in the
conformation space are revealed by calculating the integrated net probability
