    Assessing External Effects of City Airports: Land Values in Berlin

    This paper employs a hedonic price model to explain standard land values in Berlin. Impact on land values is assessed for the two city airports situated in Berlin, Germany, Tempelhof and Tegel. Empirical results confirm expectations about the impact of various attributes on land values. Areas exposed to noise pollution of downtown airport Tempelhof sell at a discount of approximately 5-9% within a distance of 5000 m along the air corridor. No significantly negative impact was found for land values around Tegel Airport, which is located in a central, but less densely populated, area. Market access indicators created for all three Berlin airports in operation, including Berlin Schoenefeld International Airport, reveal clear location advantages in terms of accessibility of Tempelhof and Tegel compared to Schoenefeld Airport, where the new Berlin Brandenburg International Airport is about to be developed

    Globalization and Trade Flows: What You See is Not What You Get!

    The trade collapse that followed the recent financial crisis has led to a renewed interest on the measurement issues affecting international merchandise trade statistics in the new globalized economy. The international fragmentation of industrial production blurs the concept of country of origin and calls for the production of new statistics on the domestic content of exports, with a view of estimating trade in value added. Alongside, the international statistical community has revised in 2010 the concepts and definitions on both, international merchandise trade and trade in services statistics. This paper discusses the various issues related to the concepts of goods for processing and intra firm trade in trade statistics, and provides an overview of the method of analysing the impact of the fragmentation of production in international value chains

    Cancer Genomics Identifies Regulatory Gene Networks Associated with the Transition from Dysplasia to Advanced Lung Adenocarcinomas Induced by c-Raf-1

    Background: Lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer morbidity. To improve an understanding of molecular causes of disease a transgenic mouse model was investigated where targeted expression of the serine threonine kinase c-Raf to respiratory epithelium induced initialy dysplasia and subsequently adenocarcinomas. This enables dissection of genetic events associated with precancerous and cancerous lesions. Methodology/Principal Findings: By laser microdissection cancer cell populations were harvested and subjected to whole genome expression analyses. Overall 473 and 541 genes were significantly regulated, when cancer versus transgenic and non-transgenic cells were compared, giving rise to three distinct and one common regulatory gene network. At advanced stages of tumor growth predominately repression of gene expression was observed, but genes previously shown to be upregulated in dysplasia were also up-regulated in solid tumors. Regulation of developmental programs as well as epithelial mesenchymal and mesenchymal endothelial transition was a hall mark of adenocarcinomas. Additionaly, genes coding for cell adhesion, i.e. the integrins and the tight and gap junction proteins were repressed, whereas ligands for receptor tyrosine kinase such as epi- and amphiregulin were up-regulated. Notably, Vegfr- 2 and its ligand Vegfd, as well as Notch and Wnt signalling cascades were regulated as were glycosylases that influence cellular recognition. Other regulated signalling molecules included guanine exchange factors that play a role in an activation of the MAP kinases while several tumor suppressors i.e. Mcc, Hey1, Fat3, Armcx1 and Reck were significantly repressed. Finally, probable molecular switches forcing dysplastic cells into malignantly transformed cells could be identified. Conclusions/Significance: This study provides insight into molecular pertubations allowing dysplasia to progress further to adenocarcinoma induced by exaggerted c-Raf kinase activity

    Real Estate valuation and forecasting in non-homogeneous markets: A case study in Greece during the financial crisis

    In this paper we develop an automatic valuation model for property valuation using a large database of historical prices from Greece. The Greek property market is an inefficient, nonhomogeneous market, still at its infancy and governed by lack of information. As a result modelling the Greek real estate market is a very interesting and challenging problem. The available data cover a wide range of properties across time and include the financial crisis period in Greece which led to tremendous changes in the dynamics of the real estate market. We formulate and compare linear and non-linear models based on regression, hedonic equations and artificial neural networks. The forecasting ability of each method is evaluated out-of-sample. Special care is given on measuring the success of the forecasts but also on identifying the property characteristics that lead to large forecasting errors. Finally, by examining the strengths and the performance of each method we apply a combined forecasting rule to improve forecasting accuracy. Our results indicate that the proposed methodology constitutes an accurate tool for property valuation in a non-homogeneous, newly developed market

    Stromal-vascular fraction content and adipose stem cell behavior are altered in morbid obese and post bariatric surgery ex-obese women

    INTRODUCTION: Subcutaneous adipose tissue is an interesting source of autologous stem cells with a fundamental role in the pathophysiology of obesity, metabolic syndromes and insulin resistance. We hypothesize that obesity could alter the stromal-vascular fraction (SVF) and adipose stem cell (ASCs) functions, which could compromise its regenerative behavior. Furthermore, we aimed to evaluate whether ASCs derived from post bariatric surgery ex-obese women maintain their functions in a similar fashion as do those from individuals who have never been obese. METHODS: The SVF of subcutaneous adipose tissue from control (n = 6, body mass index – BMI - 27.5 ± 0.5 kg/m(2)), obese (n = 12, BMI 46.2 ± 5.1 kg/m(2)) and post bariatric surgery ex-obese (n = 7, initial BMI 47.8 ± 1.3 kg/m(2); final BMI 28.1 ± 1.1 kg/m(2)) women were isolated and evaluated by flow cytometry. ASCs were tested for lipid accumulation by perilipin, adipose differentiation-related protein (ADRP) and Oil Red O staining after adipogenic stimulus. The cytokines secreted by the ASCs and after lipid accumulation induction were also evaluated. RESULTS: The subcutaneous adipose tissue of obese and post bariatric surgery ex-obese women was enriched in pericytes (p = 0.0345). The number of supra-adventitial cells was not altered in the obese patients, but it was highly enriched in the post bariatric surgery ex-obese women (p = 0.0099). The ASCs of the post bariatric surgery ex-obese patients secreted more MCP-1 (monocyte chemoattractant protein-1; p = 0.0078). After lipid accumulation induction, the ASCs of the patients in all groups secreted less IL-6 than the ASCs with no adipogenic stimulus (p < 0.0001). Obese ASCs with lipid accumulation secreted the highest amount of IL-6 (p < 0.001) whereas the ASCs from the controls secreted the highest amount of adiponectin (p < 0.0001). The ASCs from the post bariatric surgery ex-obese patients showed the highest levels of lipid accumulation whereas those from the obese women had the lowest levels (p < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: SVF content and ASC behavior are altered in the subcutaneous adipose tissue of morbid obese women; these changes are not completely restored after bariatric surgery-induced weight loss. The cellular alterations described in this study could affect the regenerative effects of adipose stem cells. Further investigations are required to avoid jeopardizing the development of autologous stem cell-based therapies
