Hippodamia variegata (Goeze) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) is a Palaearctic species that was first reported to be established in the Nearctic near Montreal, Quebec, in 1984 (Gordon 1987). Since then, this small beetle has been expanding its range in North America, a process summarized by Gardiner and Parsons (2005). It was first reported from Michigan in 2005 (Gardiner and Parsons 2005) and from Ohio in 2007 (Pavuk et al. 2007)
Attraction of \u3ci\u3ePedilus Lugubris\u3c/i\u3e (Coleoptera: Pyrochroidae) to \u3ci\u3eEpicauta Murina\u3c/i\u3e and \u3ci\u3eEpicauta Fabricii\u3c/i\u3e (Coleoptera: Meloidae) and New Food Plant Records for \u3ci\u3eEpicauta\u3c/i\u3e Spp.
Pedilus lugubris was found associated with Epicauta murina feeding on Lathyrus venosus foliage and with E. fabricii feeding on Lupinus perennis flowers. Epicauta cinerea and E. funebris were found feeding on foliage of Anemone canadensis and Physalis heterophylla, respectively. This is the first reported association of P lugubris with any species of Epicauta, and the first reported use of Lathyrus venosus by E. murina, of Lupinus perennis by E. fabricii, of Anemone canadensis by E. cinerea and of Physalis heterophylla by E. funebris
Cost-effectiveness analysis in R using a multi-state modelling survival analysis framework: a tutorial
This tutorial provides a step-by-step guide to performing cost-effectiveness analysis using a multi-state modelling approach. Alongside the tutorial we provide easy-to-use functions in the statistics package R. We argue this multi-state modelling approach using a package such as R has advantages over approaches where models are built in a spreadsheet package. In particular, using a syntax-based approach means there is a written record of what was done and the calculations are transparent. Reproducing the analysis is straightforward as the syntax just needs to be run again. The approach can be thought of as an alternative way to build a Markov decision analytic model, which also has the option to use a state-arrival extended approach if the Markov property does not hold. In the state-arrival extended multi-state model a covariate that represents patients’ history is included allowing the Markov property to be tested. We illustrate the building of multi-state survival models, making predictions from the models and assessing fits. We then proceed to perform a cost-effectiveness analysis including deterministic and probabilistic sensitivity analyses. Finally, we show how to create two common methods of visualising the results, namely cost-effectiveness planes and cost-effectiveness acceptability curves. The analysis is implemented entirely within R. It is based on adaptions to functions in the existing R package mstate, to accommodate parametric multi-state modelling which facilitates extrapolation of survival curves

A study was conducted at the Ecology Research Center, Miami University, Butler County, Ohio, during the summer of 1990 to examine the effects of strip intercropping sorghum and soybean on the occurrence of parasitoids and incidence of disease in larvae ofthe green cloverworm, Plathypena scabra (F.) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), a sporadic pest of soybeans. The details of the experimental design and results are reported elsewhere (Williams et al. 1995)
Carrion Beetles (Coleoptera: Silphidae) of Wisconsin
The first comprehensive faunal survey of the carrion beetles (Coleoptera: Silphidae) of Wisconsin is presented. Six genera and 14 species are recorded from the state, including a new state record, Heterosilpha ramosa (Say). Nicrophorus americanus Olivier was not recovered during this study. An annotated checklist includes species-specific geographical and temporal distributions, remarks on foods and habitat, and counties of specimen collections for each species
An Optical Study of Stellar and Interstellar Environments of Seven Luminous and Ultraluminous X-Ray Sources
We have studied the stellar and interstellar environments of two luminous
X-ray sources and five ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs) in order to gain
insight into their nature. Archival Hubble Space Telescope images were used to
identify the optical counterparts of the ULXs Ho IX X-1 and NGC 1313 X-2, and
to make photometric measurements of the local stellar populations of these and
the luminous source IC 10 X-1. We obtained high-dispersion spectroscopic
observations of the nebulae around these seven sources to search for He II
lambda-4686 emission and to estimate the expansion velocities and kinetic
energies of these nebulae. Our observations did not detect nebular He II
emission from any source, with the exception of LMC X-1; this is either because
we missed the He III regions or because the nebulae are too diffuse to produce
He II surface brightnesses that lie within our detection limit. We compare the
observed ionization and kinematics of the supershells around the ULXs Ho IX X-1
and NGC 1313 X-2 with the energy feedback expected from the underlying stellar
population to assess whether additional energy contributions from the ULXs are
needed. In both cases, we find insufficient UV fluxes or mechanical energies
from the stellar population; thus these ULXs may be partially responsible for
the ionization and energetics of their supershells. All seven sources we
studied are in young stellar environments and six of them have optical
counterparts with masses >~7 M_sun; thus, these sources are most likely
high-mass X-ray binaries.Comment: 30 pages, 9 figures. Numerous minor revisions, primarily to more

Transcriptional Response of Selenopolypeptide Genes and Selenocysteine Biosynthesis Machinery Genes in Escherichia coli during Selenite Reduction
This work was supported by a United States Department of Agriculture-Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service grant (no. 2009-35318-05032), a Biotechnology Research grant (no. 2007-BRG-1223) from the North Carolina Biotechnology Center, and a startup fund from the Golden LEAF Foundation to the Biomanufacturing Research Institute and Technology Enterprise (BRITE).Bacteria can reduce toxic selenite into less toxic, elemental selenium (Se0), but the mechanism on how bacterial cells reduce selenite at molecular level is still not clear. We used Escherichia coli strain K12, a common bacterial strain, as a model to study its growth response to sodium selenite (Na2SeO3) treatment and then used quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) to quantify transcript levels of three E. coli selenopolypeptide genes and a set of machinery genes for selenocysteine (SeCys) biosynthesis and incorporation into polypeptides, whose involvements in the selenite reduction are largely unknown. We determined that 5 mM Na2SeO3 treatment inhibited growth by ∼50% while 0.001 to 0.01 mM treatments stimulated cell growth by ∼30%. Under 50% inhibitory or 30% stimulatory Na2SeO3 concentration, selenopolypeptide genes (fdnG, fdoG, and fdhF) whose products require SeCys but not SeCys biosynthesis machinery genes were found to be induced ≥2-fold. In addition, one sulfur (S) metabolic gene iscS and two previously reported selenite-responsive genes sodA and gutS were also induced ≥2-fold under 50% inhibitory concentration. Our findings provide insight about the detoxification of selenite in E. coli via induction of these genes involved in the selenite reduction process.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
Global Stability of a Premixed Reaction Zone (Time-Dependent Liñan’s Problem)
Global stability properties of a premixed, three-dimensional reaction zone are considered. In the nonadiabatic case (i.e., when there is a heat exchange between the reaction zone and the burned gases) there is a unique, spatially one-dimensional steady state that is shown to be unstable (respectively, asymptotically stable) if the reaction zone is cooled (respectively, heated) by the burned mixture. In the adiabatic case, there is a unique (up to spatial translations) steady state that is shown to be stable. In addition, the large-time asymptotic behavior of the solution is analyzed to obtain sufficient conditions on the initial data for stabilization. Previous partial numerical results on linear stability of one-dimensional reaction zones are thereby confirmed and extended
Bandwidth-controlled Mott transition in I. Optical studies of localized charge excitations
Infrared reflection measurements of the half-filled two-dimensional organic
conductors -(BEDT-TTF)Cu[N(CN)]BrCl were
performed as a function of temperature ( K) and
Br-substitution (, 40%, 73%, 85%, and 90%) in order to study the
metal-insulator transition. We can distinguish absorption processes due to
itinerant and localized charge carriers. The broad mid-infrared absorption has
two contributions: transitions between the two Hubbard bands and intradimer
excitations from the charges localized on the (BEDT-TTF) dimer. Since the
latter couple to intramolecular vibrations of BEDT-TTF, the analysis of both
electronic and vibrational features provides a tool to disentangle these
contributions and to follow their temperature and electronic-correlations
dependence. Calculations based on the cluster model support our interpretation.Comment: 12 pages, 12 figure
