Estimation of bearing contact angle in-situ by X-ray kinematography
The mounted, preloaded contact angle of the structural bearings in the assembled design mechanical assembly was measured. A modification of the Turns method is presented, based upon the clarity and definition of moving parts achieved with X-ray technique and cinematic display. Contact angle is estimated by counting the number of bearings passing a given point as a function of number of turns of the shaft. Ball and pitch diameter variations are discussed. Ball train and shaft angle uncertainties are also discussed

Bit error rate measurement above and below bit rate tracking threshold
Bit error rate is measured by sending a pseudo-random noise (PRN) code test signal simulating digital data through digital equipment to be tested. An incoming signal representing the response of the equipment being tested, together with any added noise, is received and tracked by being compared with a locally generated PRN code. Once the locally generated PRN code matches the incoming signal a tracking lock is obtained. The incoming signal is then integrated and compared bit-by-bit against the locally generated PRN code and differences between bits being compared are counted as bit errors
The Evolution of Overconfidence
Confidence is an essential ingredient of success in a wide range of domains
ranging from job performance and mental health, to sports, business, and
combat. Some authors have suggested that not just confidence but
overconfidence-believing you are better than you are in reality-is advantageous
because it serves to increase ambition, morale, resolve, persistence, or the
credibility of bluffing, generating a self-fulfilling prophecy in which
exaggerated confidence actually increases the probability of success. However,
overconfidence also leads to faulty assessments, unrealistic expectations, and
hazardous decisions, so it remains a puzzle how such a false belief could
evolve or remain stable in a population of competing strategies that include
accurate, unbiased beliefs. Here, we present an evolutionary model showing
that, counter-intuitively, overconfidence maximizes individual fitness and
populations will tend to become overconfident, as long as benefits from
contested resources are sufficiently large compared to the cost of competition.
In contrast, "rational" unbiased strategies are only stable under limited
conditions. The fact that overconfident populations are evolutionarily stable
in a wide range of environments may help to explain why overconfidence remains
prevalent today, even if it contributes to hubris, market bubbles, financial
collapses, policy failures, disasters, and costly wars.Comment: Supplementary Information include
Applications of remote sensing to hydrologic planning
The transfer of LANDSAT remote sensing technology from the research sector to user operational applications requires demonstration of the utility and accuracy of LANDSAT data in solving real problems. This report describes such a demonstration project in the area of water resources, specifically the estimation of non-point source pollutant loads. Non-point source pollutants were estimated from land cover data from LANDSAT images. Classification accuracies for three small watersheds were above 95%. Land cover was converted to pollutant loads for a fourth watershed through the use of coefficients relating significant pollutants to land use and storm runoff volume. These data were input into a simulator model which simulated runoff from average rainfall. The result was the estimation of monthly expected pollutant loads for the 17 subbasins comprising the Magothy watershed
Refactoring Legacy JavaScript Code to Use Classes: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
JavaScript systems are becoming increasingly complex and large. To tackle the
challenges involved in implementing these systems, the language is evolving to
include several constructions for programming- in-the-large. For example,
although the language is prototype-based, the latest JavaScript standard, named
ECMAScript 6 (ES6), provides native support for implementing classes. Even
though most modern web browsers support ES6, only a very few applications use
the class syntax. In this paper, we analyze the process of migrating structures
that emulate classes in legacy JavaScript code to adopt the new syntax for
classes introduced by ES6. We apply a set of migration rules on eight legacy
JavaScript systems. In our study, we document: (a) cases that are
straightforward to migrate (the good parts); (b) cases that require manual and
ad-hoc migration (the bad parts); and (c) cases that cannot be migrated due to
limitations and restrictions of ES6 (the ugly parts). Six out of eight systems
(75%) contain instances of bad and/or ugly cases. We also collect the
perceptions of JavaScript developers about migrating their code to use the new

Impact of remote sensing upon the planning, management, and development of water resources
A survey of the principal water resource users was conducted to determine the impact of new remote data streams on hydrologic computer models. The analysis of the responses and direct contact demonstrated that: (1) the majority of water resource effort of the type suitable to remote sensing inputs is conducted by major federal water resources agencies or through federally stimulated research, (2) the federal government develops most of the hydrologic models used in this effort; and (3) federal computer power is extensive.
