Nanofriction mechanisms derived from the dependence of friction on load and sliding velocity from air to UHV on hydrophilic silicon
This paper examines friction as a function of the sliding velocity and
applied normal load from air to UHV in a scanning force microscope (SFM)
experiment in which a sharp silicon tip slides against a flat Si(100) sample.
Under ambient conditions, both surfaces are covered by a native oxide, which is
hydrophilic. During pump-down in the vacuum chamber housing the SFM, the
behavior of friction as a function of the applied normal load and the sliding
velocity undergoes a change. By analyzing these changes it is possible to
identify three distinct friction regimes with corresponding contact properties:
(a) friction dominated by the additional normal forces induced by capillarity
due to the presence of thick water films, (b) higher drag force from ordering
effects present in thin water layers and (c) low friction due to direct
solid-solid contact for the sample with the counterbody. Depending on
environmental conditions and the applied normal load, all three mechanisms may
be present at one time. Their individual contributions can be identified by
investigating the dependence of friction on the applied normal load as well as
on the sliding velocity in different pressure regimes, thus providing
information about nanoscale friction mechanisms
Political rights, taxation, and firm valuation : evidence from Saxony around 1900
The extension of the franchise to social groups with less property and income is associated with greater income redistribution from the rich to the poor and extension in the provision of public goods, which leads to the growth of government expenditure. All of these expected changes are costly and therefore a higher taxation of citizens and industrial firms can be expected, which might have negative effects on investors behavior.
The present paper studies the effects of changes in the suffrage in the Kingdom of Saxony at the end of the 19th Century on stock market prices of Saxon firms listed on the Berlin stock exchange: Here the electoral law was changed twice: In 1896 a very restrictive franchise was introduced, which was abolished in 1909 and replaced by a more democratic electoral law. By applying standard event study methodology, we can provide evidence that the restriction of the electoral law had positive effects on Saxon firms on the stock market, where by the extension in 1909 had negative effects on the stock market
Prognostic significance of epithelial-mesenchymal transition in malignant pleural mesothelioma
Background: Epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a morphologic transdifferentiation of carcinomas, conferring increased tumour invasiveness, but may also be applied to the epithelioid versus sarcomatoid histotype of malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM). Herein, we correlated proteins of a putative MPM-EMT axis, including periostin, epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), integrin beta1, phosphatase and tensin homologue (PTEN), integrin-linked kinase (ILK), p21 and p27, with clinico-pathologic parameters, in particular overall survival (OS). Patients and Methods: A retrospective cohort of 352 mostly untreated patients with MPM was investigated by immunohistochemistry of a tissue microarray. Protein expression intensities were semi-quantitatively scored from 0 to 3 in their respective compartments, including peritumoural stroma as well as tumour cell plasma membrane, cytoplasm or nucleus. Data were correlated with histotype and survival outcome. Results: A total of 32% of the tumours were diagnosed as epithelioid, 13% as sarcomatoid and 55% as biphasic histotype. High expression of membranous EGFR and integrin beta1 as well as nuclear p27 correlated with the epithelioid and high expression of cytoplasmic tumoural and stromal periostin with the sarcomatoid histotype. The median survival time of the 128 patients with complete follow-up data was 11.7 months. Univariate survival analysis revealed age, epithelioid histotype and any therapy as prognosticators for better OS. High expression of cytoplasmic PTEN or ILK as well as high expression of nuclear p21 or p27 correlated with increased, whereas high expression of cytoplasmic periostin with decreased OS (all p values <0.05). Multivariate Cox regression revealed any treatment, low cytoplasmic periostin and high cytoplasmic PTEN as independent prognosticators for better OS. Conclusion: Activation of periostin-triggered EMT is associated with the sarcomatoid histotype and has an impact on shorter survival of MPM patients. Finally, only the high expression of PTEN and the low expression of cytosolic periostin could be shown to be independent prognostic factors for longer O
Quantum Fluctuations Driven Orientational Disordering: A Finite-Size Scaling Study
The orientational ordering transition is investigated in the quantum
generalization of the anisotropic-planar-rotor model in the low temperature
regime. The phase diagram of the model is first analyzed within the mean-field
approximation. This predicts at a phase transition from the ordered to
the disordered state when the strength of quantum fluctuations, characterized
by the rotational constant , exceeds a critical value . As a function of temperature, mean-field theory predicts a range of
values of where the system develops long-range order upon cooling, but
enters again into a disordered state at sufficiently low temperatures
(reentrance). The model is further studied by means of path integral Monte
Carlo simulations in combination with finite-size scaling techniques,
concentrating on the region of parameter space where reentrance is predicted to
occur. The phase diagram determined from the simulations does not seem to
exhibit reentrant behavior; at intermediate temperatures a pronounced increase
of short-range order is observed rather than a genuine long-range order.Comment: 27 pages, 8 figures, RevTe
Using airborne LiDAR Survey to explore historic-era archaeological landscapes of Montserrat in the eastern Caribbean
This article describes what appears to be the first archaeological application of airborne LiDAR survey to historic-era landscapes in the Caribbean archipelago, on the island of Montserrat. LiDAR is proving invaluable in extending the reach of traditional pedestrian survey into less favorable areas, such as those covered by dense neotropical forest and by ashfall from the past two decades of active eruptions by the Soufrière Hills volcano, and to sites in localities that are inaccessible on account of volcanic dangers. Emphasis is placed on two aspects of the research: first, the importance of ongoing, real-time interaction between the LiDAR analyst and the archaeological team in the field; and second, the advantages of exploiting the full potential of the three-dimensional LiDAR point cloud data for purposes of the visualization of archaeological sites and features
Temporal Evolution of the Solar Wind Bulk Velocity atSolar Minimum by Correlating the STEREO A andBPLASTIC Measurements
The two STEREO spacecraft with nearly identical instrumentation were launched near solar activity minimum and they separate by about 45° per year, providing a unique tool to study the temporal evolution of the solar wind. We analyze the solar wind bulk velocity measured by the two PLASTIC plasma instruments onboard the two STEREO spacecraft. During the first half year of our measurements (March - August 2007) we find the typical alternating slow and fast solar wind stream pattern expected at solar minimum. To evaluate the temporal evolution of the solar wind bulk velocity we exclude the spatial variations and calculate the correlation between the solar wind bulk velocity measured by the two spacecraft. We account for the different spacecraft positions in radial distance and longitude by calculating the corresponding time lag. After adjusting for this time lag we compare the solar wind bulk velocity measurements at the two spacecraft and calculate the correlation between the two time-shifted datasets. We show how this correlation decreases as the time difference between two corresponding measurements increases. As a result, the characteristic temporal changes in the solar wind bulk velocity can be inferred. The obtained correlation is 0.95 for a time lag of 0.5 days and 0.85 for 2 day
Sources of nonlinearities, chatter generation and suppression in metal cutting
The mechanics of chip formation has been revisited in order to understand functional relationships between the process and the technological parameters. This has led to the necessity of considering the chip-formation process as highly nonlinear, with complex interrelations between its dynamics and thermodynamics. In this paper a critical review of the state of the art of modelling and the experimental investigations is outlined with a view to how the nonlinear dynamics perception can help to capture the major phenomena causing instabilities (chatter) in machining operations. The paper is concluded with a case study, where stability of a milling process is investigated in detail, using an analytical model which results in an explicit relation for the stability limit. The model is very practical for the generation of the stability lobe diagrams, which is time consuming when using numerical methods. The extension of the model to the stability analysis of variable pitch cutting tools is also given. The application and verification of the method are demonstrated by several examples
Molecular characterization of Miraflores peach variety and relatives using SSRs

http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/journal/03044238Some traditional peach varieties, originated from the region of Aragón (Spain), were analysed by SSRs (Simple Sequence Repeats). The aim of this research was to characterize 19 clones related to ‘Miraflores’ variety, with unknown pedigrees, to assess their genetic diversity and to elucidate their possible relationships with 10 traditional peach varieties. Twenty SSR primer pairs with high levels of polymorphism, which have been previously developed for peach, were used in this study. A total of 46 alleles were obtained for all the microsatellites studied, ranging from one to six alleles per locus, with a mean value of 2.3 alleles per locus. Fourteen SSRs were polymorphic in the set of varieties studied and permitted to distinguish 16 different genotypes out of the 30 initially studied, although fourteen ‘Miraflores’ clones showed identical gel profiles. The genetic distance matrix was used to construct Neighbor joining cluster and to perform principal coordinate analysis which allowed the arrangement of all the genotypes according to their genetic relationships. The genetic relationships among these traditional peach varieties, and in particular among ‘Miraflores’ clones are discussed. Fluorescent carbon dioxide indicators
Over the last decade, fluorescence has become the dominant tool in biotechnology and medical imaging. These exciting advances have been underpinned by the advances in time-resolved techniques and instrumentation, probe design, chemical / biochemical sensing, coupled with our furthered knowledge in biology. Complementary volumes 9 and 10, Advanced Concepts of Fluorescence Sensing: Small Molecule Sensing and Advanced Concepts of Fluorescence Sensing: Macromolecular Sensing, aim to summarize the current state of the art in fluorescent sensing. For this reason, Drs. Geddes and Lakowicz have invited chapters, encompassing a broad range of fluorescence sensing techniques. Some chapters deal with small molecule sensors, such as for anions, cations, and CO2, while others summarize recent advances in protein-based and macromolecular sensors. The Editors have, however, not included DNA or RNA based sensing in this volume, as this were reviewed in Volume 7 and is to be the subject of a more detailed volume in the near future
Detailed spectral and morphological analysis of the shell type SNR RCW 86
Aims: We aim for an understanding of the morphological and spectral
properties of the supernova remnant RCW~86 and for insights into the production
mechanism leading to the RCW~86 very high-energy gamma-ray emission. Methods:
We analyzed High Energy Spectroscopic System data that had increased
sensitivity compared to the observations presented in the RCW~86 H.E.S.S.
discovery publication. Studies of the morphological correlation between the
0.5-1~keV X-ray band, the 2-5~keV X-ray band, radio, and gamma-ray emissions
have been performed as well as broadband modeling of the spectral energy
distribution with two different emission models. Results:We present the first
conclusive evidence that the TeV gamma-ray emission region is shell-like based
on our morphological studies. The comparison with 2-5~keV X-ray data reveals a
correlation with the 0.4-50~TeV gamma-ray emission.The spectrum of RCW~86 is
best described by a power law with an exponential cutoff at TeV and a spectral index of ~. A static
leptonic one-zone model adequately describes the measured spectral energy
distribution of RCW~86, with the resultant total kinetic energy of the
electrons above 1 GeV being equivalent to 0.1\% of the initial kinetic
energy of a Type I a supernova explosion. When using a hadronic model, a
magnetic field of ~100G is needed to represent the measured data.
Although this is comparable to formerly published estimates, a standard
E spectrum for the proton distribution cannot describe the gamma-ray
data. Instead, a spectral index of ~1.7 would be required, which
implies that ~erg has been transferred into
high-energy protons with the effective density cm^-3. This
is about 10\% of the kinetic energy of a typical Type Ia supernova under the
assumption of a density of 1~cm^-3.Comment: accepted for publication by A&
