Luttinger liquid versus charge density wave behaviour in the one-dimensional spinless fermion Holstein model
We discuss the nature of the different ground states of the half-filled
Holstein model of spinless fermions in 1D. In the metallic regime we determine
the renormalised effective coupling constant and the velocity of the charge
excitations by a density-matrix renormalisation group (DMRG) finite-size
scaling approach. At low (high) phonon frequencies the Luttinger liquid is
characterised by an attractive (repulsive) effective interaction. In the
charge-density wave Peierls-distorted state the charge structure factor scales
to a finite value indicating long-range order.Comment: 2 pages, 3 figures, submitted to SCES'0
Does Luttinger liquid behaviour survive in an atomic wire on a surface?
We form a highly simplified model of an atomic wire on a surface by the
coupling of two one-dimensional chains, one with electron-electron interactions
to represent the wire and and one with no electron-electron interactions to
represent the surface. We use exact diagonalization techniques to calculate the
eigenstates and response functions of our model, in order to determine both the
nature of the coupling and to what extent the coupling affects the Luttinger
liquid properties we would expect in a purely one-dimensional system. We find
that while there are indeed Luttinger liquid indicators present, some residual
Fermi liquid characteristics remain.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures. Submitted to J Phys
Simultaneous Multi-Slice MRI using Cartesian and Radial FLASH and Regularized Nonlinear Inversion: SMS-NLINV
Purpose: The development of a calibrationless parallel imaging method for
accelerated simultaneous multi-slice (SMS) MRI based on Regularized Nonlinear
Inversion (NLINV), evaluated using Cartesian and radial FLASH. Theory and
Methods: NLINV is a parallel imaging method that jointly estimates image
content and coil sensitivities using a Newton-type method with regularization.
Here, NLINV is extended to SMS-NLINV for reconstruction and separation of all
simultaneously acquired slices. The performance of the extended method is
evaluated for different sampling schemes using phantom and in-vivo experiments
based on Cartesian and radial SMS-FLASH sequences. Results: The basic algorithm
was validated in Cartesian experiments by comparison with ESPIRiT. For
Cartesian and radial sampling, improved results are demonstrated compared to
single-slice experiments, and it is further shown that sampling schemes using
complementary samples outperform schemes with the same samples in each
partition. Conclusion: The extension of the NLINV algorithm for SMS data was
implemented and successfully demonstrated in combination with a Cartesian and
radial SMS-FLASH sequence.Comment: Part of this work has been presented at the ISMRM Annual Conference

Anomalous temperature dependence of the single-particle spectrum in the organic conductor TTF-TCNQ
The angle-resolved photoemission spectrum of the organic conductor TTF-TCNQ
exhibits an unusual transfer of spectral weight over a wide energy range for
temperatures 60K<T<260K. In order to investigate the origin of this finding,
here we report numerical results on the single-particle spectral weight
A(k,omega) for the one-dimensional (1D) Hubbard model and, in addition, for the
1D extended Hubbard and the 1D Hubbard-Holstein models. Comparisons with the
photoemission data suggest that the 1D Hubbard model is not sufficient for
explaining the unusual T dependence, and the long-range part of the Coulomb
repulsion also needs to be included.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Magnetoresistance, noise properties and the Koshino-Taylor effect in the quasi-1D oxide KRu_4O_8
The low temperature electronic and galvanomagnetic transport properties of
the low dimensional oxide KRu_4O_8 are experimentally considered. A quadratic
temperature variation of the resistivity is observed to be proportional to the
residual resistivity. It shows the role of inelastic electron scattering
against impurities, i.e. a large Koshino-Taylor effect, rather than a
consequence of strong electronic correlations. In the same temperature range,
the Kohler rule is not fulfilled. The resistance noise increases also sharply,
possibly due to a strong coupling of carriers with lattice fluctuations in this
low dimensional compound.Comment: accepted for publication in Europhysics Lette
How universal is the one-particle Green's function of a Luttinger liquid?
The one-particle Green's function of the Tomonaga-Luttinger model for
one-dimensional interacting Fermions is discussed. Far away from the origin of
the plane of space-time coordinates the function falls off like a power law.
The exponent depends on the direction within the plane. For a certain form of
the interaction potential or within an approximated cut-off procedure the
different exponents only depend on the strength of the interaction at zero
momentum and can be expressed in terms of the Luttinger liquid parameters
and of the model at hand. For a more general
interaction and directions which are determined by the charge velocity
and spin velocity the exponents also depend on the
smoothness of the interaction at zero momentum and the asymptotic behavior of
the Green's function is not given by the Luttinger liquid parameters alone.
This shows that the physics of large space-time distances in Luttinger liquids
is less universal than is widely believed.Comment: 5 pages with 2 figure
Boundary Effects on Spectral Properties of Interacting Electrons in One Dimension
The single electron Green's function of the one-dimensional
Tomonaga-Luttinger model in the presence of open boundaries is calculated with
bosonization methods. We show that the critical exponents of the local spectral
density and of the momentum distribution change in the presence of a boundary.
The well understood universal bulk behavior always crosses over to a boundary
dominated regime for small energies or small momenta. We show this crossover
explicitly for the large-U Hubbard model in the low-temperature limit.
Consequences for photoemission experiments are discussed.Comment: revised and reformatted paper to appear in Phys. Rev. Lett. (Feb.

An Exactly Solvable Kondo Problem for Interacting One-Dimensional Fermions
The single impurity Kondo problem in the one-dimensional -potential
Fermi gas is exactly solved for two sets of special coupling constants via
Bethe ansatz. It is found that ferromagnetic Kondo screening does occur in one
case which confirms the Furusaki-Nagaosa conjecture while in the other case it
does not, which we explain in a simple physical picture. The surface energy,
the low temperature specific heat and the Pauli susceptibility induced by the
impurity and thereby the Kondo temperature are derived explicitly.Comment: 8 pages, LATEX, REVTE
