Boundary Reflection Matrix for Affine Toda Field Theory
We present one loop boundary reflection matrix for Toda field
theory defined on a half line with the Neumann boundary condition. This result
demonstrates a nontrivial cancellation of non-meromorphic terms which are
present when the model has a particle spectrum with more than one mass. Using
this result, we determine uniquely the exact boundary reflection matrix which
turns out to be \lq non-minimal' if we assume the strong-weak coupling \lq

Boundary breathers in the sinh-Gordon model
We present an investigation of the boundary breather states of the
sinh-Gordon model restricted to a half-line. The classical boundary breathers
are presented for a two parameter family of integrable boundary conditions.
Restricting to the case of boundary conditions which preserve the \phi -->
-\phi symmetry of the bulk theory, the energy spectrum of the boundary states
is computed in two ways: firstly, by using the bootstrap technique and
subsequently, by using a WKB approximation. Requiring that the two descriptions
of the spectrum agree with each other allows a determination of the
relationship between the boundary parameter, the bulk coupling constant, and
the parameter appearing in the reflection factor derived by Ghoshal to describe
the scattering of the sinh-Gordon particle from the boundary.Comment: 16 pages amslate
Terahertz oscillations in an In<sub>0.53</sub>Ga<sub>0.47</sub>As submicron planar gunn diode
The length of the transit region of a Gunn diode determines the natural frequency at which it operates in fundamental mode – the shorter the device, the higher the frequency of operation. The long-held view on Gunn diode design is that for a functioning device the minimum length of the transit region is about 1.5μm, limiting the devices to fundamental mode operation at frequencies of roughly 60 GHz. Study of these devices by more advanced Monte Carlo techniques that simulate the ballistic transport and electron-phonon interactions that govern device behaviour, offers a new lower bound of 0.5μm, which is already being approached by the experimental evidence that has shown planar and vertical devices exhibiting Gunn operation at 600nm and 700nm, respectively. The paper presents results of the first ever THz submicron planar Gunn diode fabricated in In<sub>0.53</sub>Ga<sub>0.47</sub>A on an InP substrate, operating at a fundamental frequency above 300 GHz. Experimentally measured rf power of 28 µW was obtained from a 600 nm long ×120 µm wide device. At this new length, operation in fundamental mode at much higher frequencies becomes possible – the Monte Carlo model used predicts power output at frequencies over 300 GHz
Beyond Volume: The Impact of Complex Healthcare Data on the Machine Learning Pipeline
From medical charts to national census, healthcare has traditionally operated
under a paper-based paradigm. However, the past decade has marked a long and
arduous transformation bringing healthcare into the digital age. Ranging from
electronic health records, to digitized imaging and laboratory reports, to
public health datasets, today, healthcare now generates an incredible amount of
digital information. Such a wealth of data presents an exciting opportunity for
integrated machine learning solutions to address problems across multiple
facets of healthcare practice and administration. Unfortunately, the ability to
derive accurate and informative insights requires more than the ability to
execute machine learning models. Rather, a deeper understanding of the data on
which the models are run is imperative for their success. While a significant
effort has been undertaken to develop models able to process the volume of data
obtained during the analysis of millions of digitalized patient records, it is
important to remember that volume represents only one aspect of the data. In
fact, drawing on data from an increasingly diverse set of sources, healthcare
data presents an incredibly complex set of attributes that must be accounted
for throughout the machine learning pipeline. This chapter focuses on
highlighting such challenges, and is broken down into three distinct
components, each representing a phase of the pipeline. We begin with attributes
of the data accounted for during preprocessing, then move to considerations
during model building, and end with challenges to the interpretation of model
output. For each component, we present a discussion around data as it relates
to the healthcare domain and offer insight into the challenges each may impose

Metabolic Signatures of Lung Cancer in Biofluids: NMR-Based Metabonomics of Blood Plasma
In this work, the variations in the metabolic profile of blood plasma from lung cancer patients and healthy controls were investigated through NMR-based metabonomics, to assess the potential of this approach for lung cancer screening and diagnosis. PLS-DA modeling of CPMG spectra from plasma, subjected to Monte Carlo Cross Validation, allowed cancer patients to be discriminated from controls with sensitivity and specificity levels of about 90%. Relatively lower HDL and higher VLDL + LDL in the patients' plasma, together with increased lactate and pyruvate and decreased levels of glucose, citrate, formate, acetate, several amino acids (alanine, glutamine, histidine, tyrosine, valine), and methanol, could be detected. These changes were found to be present at initial disease stages and could be related to known cancer biochemical hallmarks, such as enhanced glycolysis, glutaminolysis, and gluconeogenesis, together with suppressed Krebs cycle and reduced lipid catabolism, thus supporting the hypothesis of a systemic metabolic signature for lung cancer. The importance of both setting and intensity of physical activity in relation to non-clinical anxiety and depression
Physical activity is associated with good physical and mental health. Current recommendations suggest that people should achieve 30 minutes of moderate-intensity activity most days of the week to gain health benefits. This activity may be accumulated in leisure time, in active commuting, at work or in the home. Here we look at the cross-sectional relationship between physical activity and mental health as measured by the HADS anxiety and depression scores in a sample of 1,742 participants from a Scottish general population survey. The participants were men and women in three age cohorts aged around 24, 44 and 64 years who, in 1995, were interviewed face to face and also self-completed the HADS depression and anxiety scale. Respondents reported their levels of physical activity at work, in the home and in leisure time; the intensities of activity were also determined. Physical activity was related to depression scores but not to anxiety scores. There was no relationship between work physical activity and depression score. Among women, depression score increased with each additional episode of vigorous home activity. In both sexes, depression score decreased with each additional episode of vigorous leisure activity, but among men the decrease in depression score with moderate leisure activity was reversed if a lot of moderate activity was undertaken. We have found a variable relationship between depression scores and various settings for physical activity. Researchers, policymakers and practitioners who are interested in the relationship between physical activity and mental health should take into account the setting for activity as well as frequency, duration and intensity of activity
Reflecting on loss in Papua New Guinea
This article takes up the conundrum of conducting anthropological fieldwork with people who claim that they have 'lost their culture,' as is the case with Suau people in the Massim region of Papua New Guinea. But rather than claiming culture loss as a process of dispossession, Suau claim it as a consequence of their own attempts to engage with colonial interests. Suau appear to have responded to missionization and their close proximity to the colonial-era capital by jettisoning many of the practices characteristic of Massim societies, now identified as 'kastom.' The rejection of kastom in order to facilitate their relations with Europeans during colonialism, followed by the mourning for kastom after independence, both invite consideration of a kind of reflexivity that requires action based on the presumed perspective of another

Heritage language anxiety and majority language anxiety among Turkish immigrants in the Netherlands
Aims and objectives: This study examines the language anxiety that occurs in immigrants’ daily lives when speaking the heritage language and the majority language, both in their host country and during visits to their home country. It compares the levels of heritage language anxiety and majority language anxiety across three generations of the Turkish immigrant community in the Netherlands and explores the link between immigrants’ language anxiety, and sociobiographical (i.e. generation, gender, education) and language background variables (i.e. age of acquisition, self-perceived proficiency, frequency of language use).
Design: A Likert scale-based questionnaire was administered to 116 participants across three generations who reported their language anxiety levels when speaking the heritage language and the majority language in three social contexts (i.e. family, friendship and speaking with native speakers).
Findings: Statistical analyses revealed that heritage language anxiety and majority language anxiety were prevalent in immigrants’ daily life, and that levels of both forms of anxiety differed across generations, and in different daily life situations. First- and second-generation immigrants typically experienced majority language anxiety, while second- and predominantly third-generation immigrants suffered from heritage language anxiety. Relationships emerged between language background variables and both forms of anxiety, but only in certain situations. These findings suggest that language background variables on their own may be insufficient to explain immigrant language anxiety in certain social contexts (i.e. within family). Rather than merely language background factors, a variety of other issues within social, cultural and national currents must be considered when examining language anxiety in the immigrant context.
Implications: Taking an interdisciplinary approach that combines language contact and foreign language anxiety/second language anxiety research, this study suggests that the concept of foreign language anxiety/second language anxiety should be expanded beyond the confines of the classroom in order to include daily interactions immigrant or minority communities.
Originality: This study contributes to the limited body of evidence on the topic of language anxiety in immigrant contexts and presents a new construct ‘majority language anxiety’
