250kW transformer-less voltage dip compensator
Voltage dips cause serious problems for sensitive equipment in industrial applications. The possibility of applying a transformer-less dip compensator is investigated as a cost-effective solution to overcome this hazard. This is achieved by means of a power electronic multi-level converter placed in series with the supply.Conference Pape
Solid state opening switch requirements for standard inductive storage pulse forming networks
The commutation of energy from an inductive energy storage Pulse Forming Network (PFN) to a load requires high power opening switches. The problems associated with this are numerous as requirements reach far into the tens of kA and kV. This paper examines relationship between standard storage topologies and their opening switches, and draws attention to the possible problems one could encounter.Conference Pape
Direct-coupled cascaded multilevel sag compensator
Voltage sags (or dips) are the most common power quality problem. The aim of this paper is to propose a multilevel-cascaded converter, connected in series with the supply, which acts as a sag compensator. The converter is direct-coupled and eliminates the use of costly output filters and injection transformers. The converter operation and control techniques are discussed and confirmed with simulations and practical results.Conference Pape
Active resonant snubber for high power IGBT converters
This paper introduces a new active resonant snubber topology suited to high power converters. The main feature of this snubber is that the peak current rating of the auxiliary switches is small compared to that of the main switches. The basic operation of the snubber is analyzed. This is followed by an experimental evaluation of the basic operating principles.Conference Pape
