Spatial Control of Photoemitted Electron Beams using a Micro-Lens-Array Transverse-Shaping Technique
A common issue encountered in photoemission electron sources used in electron
accelerators is the transverse inhomogeneity of the laser distribution
resulting from the laser-amplification process and often use of frequency up
conversion in nonlinear crystals. A inhomogeneous laser distribution on the
photocathode produces charged beams with lower beam quality. In this paper, we
explore the possible use of microlens arrays (fly-eye light condensers) to
dramatically improve the transverse uniformity of the drive laser pulse on UV
photocathodes. We also demonstrate the use of such microlens arrays to generate
transversely-modulated electron beams and present a possible application to

Perturbation-minimized triangular bunch for high-transformer ratio using a double dogleg emittance exchange beam line
The longitudinal shape, i.e., the current profile, of an electron bunch determines the transformer ratio in a collinear wakefield accelerator and thus methods are sought to control the longitudinal bunch shape. The emittance exchange (EEX) appears to be promising for creating a precisely controlled longitudinal bunch shapes. The longitudinal shape is perturbed by two sources: higher-order terms in the beam line optics and collective effects and these perturbations can lead to a significant drop of the transformer ratio. In this paper, we analytically and numerically investigate the perturbation to an ideal triangular longitudinal bunch shape and propose methods to minimize it.1153Ysciescopu
precision control of the electron longitudinal bunch shape using an emittence-exchange beam line
We report on the experimental generation of relativistic electron bunches with a tunable longitudinal bunch shape. A longitudinal bunch-shaping (LBS) beam line, consisting of a transverse mask followed by a transverse-to-longitudinal emittance exchange (EEX) beam line, is used to tailor the longitudinal bunch shape (or current profile) of the electron bunch. The mask shapes the bunch's horizontal profile, and the EEX beam line converts it to a corresponding longitudinal profile. The Argonne wakefield accelerator rf photoinjector delivers electron bunches into a LBS beam line to generate a variety of longitudinal bunch shapes. The quality of the longitudinal bunch shape is limited by various perturbations in the exchange process. We develop a simple method, based on the incident slope of the bunch, to significantly suppress the perturbations.1162Ysciescopu
Diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorders Using Multi-level High-order Functional Networks Derived from Resting-State Functional MRI
Functional brain networks derived from resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) have been widely used for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnosis. Typically, these networks are constructed by calculating functional connectivity (FC) between any pair of brain regions of interest (ROIs), i.e., using Pearson's correlation between rs-fMRI time series. However, this can only be called as a low-order representation of the functional interaction, because the relationship is investigated just between two ROIs. Brain disorders might not only affect low-order FC, but also high-order FC, i.e., the higher-level relationship among multiple brain regions, which might be more crucial for diagnosis. To comprehensively characterize such relationship for better diagnosis of ASD, we propose a multi-level, high-order FC network representation that can nicely capture complex interactions among brain regions. Then, we design a feature selection method to identify those discriminative multi-level, high-order FC features for ASD diagnosis. Finally, we design an ensemble classifier with multiple linear SVMs, each trained on a specific level of FC networks, for boosting the final classification accuracy. Experimental results show that the integration of both low-order and first-level high-order FC networks achieves the best ASD diagnostic accuracy (81%). We further investigated those selected discriminative low-order and high-order FC features and found that the high-order FC features can provide complementary information to the low-order FC features in the ASD diagnosis
A systems approach to policy evaluation
There is growing interest in evaluating policy implementation in ways that grapple with the complexity of the process. This article offers an example of using systems methodology to explore how the child protection policy in child contact centres has functioned in practice. Rather than just asking the traditional evaluation question “is it working?” this study sought to understand how the policy was working and how it was interpreted as it interacted with other systems, producing conflicts, local variation and emergent effects. It illustrates how the systems concepts of ‘emergence’, ‘local rationality’, ‘socio-technical systems’ and ‘feedback for learning’ can contribute new knowledge and understanding to a complex policy evaluation problem
25-Hydroxyvitamin D and pre-clinical alterations in inflammatory and hemostatic markers: a cross sectional analysis in the 1958 British Birth Cohort
BACKGROUND: Vitamin D deficiency has been suggested as a cardiovascular risk factor, but little is known about underlying mechanisms or associations with inflammatory or hemostatic markers. Our aim was to investigate the association between 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D, a measure for vitamin D status] concentrations with pre-clinical variations in markers of inflammation and hemostasis. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Serum concentrations of 25(OH)D, C-reactive protein (CRP), fibrinogen, D-dimer, tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) antigen, and von Willebrand factor (vWF) were measured in a large population based study of British whites (aged 45 y). Participants for the current investigation were restricted to individuals free of drug treated cardiovascular disease (n = 6538). Adjusted for sex and month, 25(OH)D was inversely associated with all outcomes (p or =75 nmol/l compared to < 25 nmol/l. D-dimer concentrations were lower for participants with 25(OH)D 50-90 nmol/l compared to others (quadratic term p = 0.01). We also examined seasonal variation in hemostatic and inflammatory markers, and evaluated 25(OH)D contribution to the observed patterns using mediation models. TPA concentrations varied by season (p = 0.02), and much of this pattern was related to fluctuations in 25(OH)D concentrations (p < or =0.001). Some evidence of a seasonal variation was observed also for fibrinogen, D-dimer and vWF (p < 0.05 for all), with 25(OH)D mediating some of the pattern for fibrinogen and D-dimer, but not vWF. CONCLUSIONS: Current vitamin D status was associated with tPA concentrations, and to a lesser degree with fibrinogen and D-dimer, suggesting that vitamin D status/intake may be important for maintaining antithrombotic homeostasi
The effect of disgust-related side-effects on symptoms of depression and anxiety in people treated for cancer: a moderated mediation model
As maladaptive disgust responses are linked to mental health problems, and cancer patients
may experience heightened disgust as a result of treatments they receive, we explored the
associations between disgust-related side-effects and symptoms of depression and anxiety in
people treated for cancer. One hundred and thirty two (83 women, Mage = 57.48 years)
participants answered questions about their treatments, side-effects, disgust responding, and
mental health. Experiencing bowel and/or bladder problems, sickness and/or nausea (referred
to here as “core” disgust-related side-effects) was significantly related to greater symptoms of
depression and borderline increased anxiety. Further, these links were explained by a
moderated mediation model, whereby the effects of core disgust side-effects on depression
and anxiety were mediated by (physical and behavioural) self-directed disgust, and disgust
propensity moderated the effect of core disgust side-effects on self-disgust. These findings
stress the importance of emotional responses, like disgust, in psychological adaptation to the
side-effects of cancer treatments

Milk and dairy products: good or bad for human health? An assessment of the totality of scientific evidence
Background: There is scepticism about health effects of dairy products in the public, which is reflected in an increasing intake of plant-based drinks, for example, from soy, rice, almond, or oat.
Objective: This review aimed to assess the scientific evidence mainly from meta-analyses of observational studies and randomised controlled trials, on dairy intake and risk of obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, cancer, and all-cause mortality.
Results: The most recent evidence suggested that intake of milk and dairy products was associated with reduced risk of childhood obesity. In adults, intake of dairy products was shown to improve body composition and facilitate weight loss during energy restriction. In addition, intake of milk and dairy products was associated with a neutral or reduced risk of type 2 diabetes and a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, particularly stroke. Furthermore, the evidence suggested a beneficial effect of milk and dairy intake on bone mineral density but no association with risk of bone fracture. Among cancers, milk and dairy intake was inversely associated with colorectal cancer, bladder cancer, gastric cancer, and breast cancer, and not associated with risk of pancreatic cancer, ovarian cancer, or lung cancer,while the evidence for prostate cancer risk was inconsistent.Finally,consumption of milk and dairy products was not associated with all-cause mortality. Calcium-fortified plant-based drinks have been included as an alternative to dairy products in the nutrition recommendations in several countries. However, nutritionally, cow’s milk and plant-based drinks are completely different foods,and an evidence-based conclusion on the health value of the plant-based drinks requires more studies in humans.
Conclusion: The totality of available scientific evidence supports that intake of milk and dairy products contribute to meet nutrient recommendations, and may protect against the most prevalent chronic diseases, whereas very few adverse effects have been reported
Hydrokinetic Turbine Effects on Fish Swimming Behaviour
Hydrokinetic turbines, targeting the kinetic energy of fast-flowing currents, are under development with some turbines
already deployed at ocean sites around the world. It remains virtually unknown as to how these technologies affect
fish, and rotor collisions have been postulated as a major concern. In this study the effects of a vertical axis
hydrokinetic rotor with rotational speeds up to 70 rpm were tested on the swimming patterns of naturally occurring
fish in a subtropical tidal channel. Fish movements were recorded with and without the rotor in place. Results showed
that no fish collided with the rotor and only a few specimens passed through rotor blades. Overall, fish reduced their
movements through the area when the rotor was present. This deterrent effect on fish increased with current speed.
Fish that passed the rotor avoided the near-field, about 0.3 m from the rotor for benthic reef fish. Large predatory fish
were particularly cautious of the rotor and never moved closer than 1.7 m in current speeds above 0.6 ms-1. The
effects of the rotor differed among taxa and feeding guilds and it is suggested that fish boldness and body shape
influenced responses. In conclusion, the tested hydrokinetic turbine rotor proved non-hazardous to fish during the
investigated conditions. However, the results indicate that arrays comprising multiple turbines may restrict fish
movements, particularly for large species, with possible effects on habitat connectivity if migration routes are
exploited. Arrays of the investigated turbine type and comparable systems should therefore be designed with gaps of
several metres width to allow large fish to pass through. In combination with further research the insights from this
study can be used for guiding the design of hydrokinetic turbine arrays where needed, so preventing ecological
impacts
