Glucose-induced down regulation of thiamine transporters in the kidney proximal tubular epithelium produces thiamine insufficiency in diabetes

Increased renal clearance of thiamine (vitamin B1) occurs in experimental and clinical diabetes producing thiamine insufficiency mediated by impaired tubular re-uptake and linked to the development of diabetic nephropathy. We studied the mechanism of impaired renal re-uptake of thiamine in diabetes. Expression of thiamine transporter proteins THTR-1 and THTR-2 in normal human kidney sections examined by immunohistochemistry showed intense polarised staining of the apical, luminal membranes in proximal tubules for THTR-1 and THTR-2 of the cortex and uniform, diffuse staining throughout cells of the collecting duct for THTR-1 and THTR-2 of the medulla. Human primary proximal tubule epithelial cells were incubated with low and high glucose concentration, 5 and 26 mmol/l, respectively. In high glucose concentration there was decreased expression of THTR-1 and THTR-2 (transporter mRNA: −76% and −53% respectively, p<0.001; transporter protein −77% and −83% respectively, p<0.05), concomitant with decreased expression of transcription factor specificity protein-1. High glucose concentration also produced a 37% decrease in apical to basolateral transport of thiamine transport across cell monolayers. Intensification of glycemic control corrected increased fractional excretion of thiamine in experimental diabetes. We conclude that glucose-induced decreased expression of thiamine transporters in the tubular epithelium may mediate renal mishandling of thiamine in diabetes. This is a novel mechanism of thiamine insufficiency linked to diabetic nephropathy

Menemani dari Dalam Pengalaman Bersama Umat Baha’i di Pekanbaru, Riau: Accompanying From Within Experiences with Baha’i Communities in Pekanbaru, Riau

The Bahá’í community in Indonesia—particularly in Riau—is a religious minority frequently facing social, symbolic, and structural exclusion. This article examines the experience of accompanying the Bahá’í community in Pekanbaru during several of its religious observances, including Ridván, Naw-Rúz, and the Birth of Bahá’u’lláh. Employing a sociological approach and drawing on symbolic interactionism, recognition theory, and James C. Scott’s concept of everyday resistance, this study argues that “accompanying” is not merely a gesture of spiritual solidarity but a meaningful social practice that constitutes symbolic resistance to dominant religious narratives. The findings reveal that through empathetic and non-confrontational daily interactions, interfaith actors subtly challenge the boundaries of religious exclusivism and help create a more equitable spiritual space for marginalized groups. As such, accompanying becomes a form of infrapolitics—an understated yet powerful resistance to structural domination. This article contributes to the discourse on pluralism and interfaith studies in Indonesia by highlighting the importance of social presence as a strategy of cultural liberation and affirmation of dignity for marginalized faith communities

Engineering the Determination of Sex in the Womb According to Islamic Law. Currently, modern science and technology have developed quickly and dynamically. One development in medical science is engineering of the foetus (genetics) which can bring about benefits and at the same time possibilities that can be harmful to human dignity. Under Islamic law, engineering studies of the foetus can be categorised as a part of issues of fikih al-nawâzil. The problems are in need of the ihtiyâth ijtihâdiyyahprocess or regularity of istishlâhiyyah. Therefore, when mashlahahdominates as the main principle in engineering of the foetus then it can be justified. But if undertaken solely as a limited exercise at the same time determining the sex of the foetus then it cannot be justified under Islamic law because the exercise intervenes in the area of God Almighty in the creation of life.DOI: 10.15408/ajis.v14i2.128

The Muslim problematic: Muslims, state schools and security

    Get PDF
Muslims are folk-devils that mark the ubiquitous moral panic. For some, the idea of the Muslim problematic signifies a long and worrying trend of creeping ‘Islamification’ of state schools. For others, the discourse of the Muslim problematic reflects the ongoing racial patholigisation of Britain’s minoritised communities. One thing is for certain, the current debate marks a significant moment in the nature and function of the neoliberal state as it reframes race relation policy in Britain in the light of the security agenda. The Trojan Horse affair, surrounding claims of infiltration of radical Islam in state-run schools, marks a significant moment in the embedding of the security agenda in Britain’s inner city schools through the medium of the Prevent agenda. It argues that one of the best ways of understanding the security agenda is by locating it within a broader sociological and historical context of the functioning of the racial state
