Morphing of Geometric Composites via Residual Swelling
Understanding and controlling the shape of thin, soft objects has been the
focus of significant research efforts among physicists, biologists, and
engineers in the last decade. These studies aim to utilize advanced materials
in novel, adaptive ways such as fabricating smart actuators or mimicking living
tissues. Here, we present the controlled growth--like morphing of 2D sheets
into 3D shapes by preparing geometric composite structures that deform by
residual swelling. The morphing of these geometric composites is dictated by
both swelling and geometry, with diffusion controlling the swelling-induced
actuation, and geometric confinement dictating the structure's deformed shape.
Building on a simple mechanical analog, we present an analytical model that
quantitatively describes how the Gaussian and mean curvatures of a thin disk
are affected by the interplay among geometry, mechanics, and swelling. This
model is in excellent agreement with our experiments and numerics. We show that
the dynamics of residual swelling is dictated by a competition between two
characteristic diffusive length scales governed by geometry. Our results
provide the first 2D analog of Timoshenko's classical formula for the thermal
bending of bimetallic beams - our generalization explains how the Gaussian
curvature of a 2D geometric composite is affected by geometry and elasticity.
The understanding conferred by these results suggests that the controlled
shaping of geometric composites may provide a simple complement to traditional
manufacturing techniques
Firm exporting and employee benefits: first evidence from Vietnam manufacturing SMEs
This study examines linkages between the export participation of firms and employee benefits in terms of wages and employment quality. Based on a uniquely matched firmworker panel dataset for 2007 and 2009, we find evidence that export participation by firms in Vietnam has a positive impact on wages when taking into account firm characteristics alone. However, the exporter wage premium falls when both firm and worker characteristics are controlled for, and it decreases further when controlling for time-invariant unobservable factors by spell fixed effect estimation. While there are many studies on the export wage premium, the role of export participation on the quality of employment remains largely unexplored. By using a firm-level balanced panel dataset for the same period, our results suggest that export participation has a negative effect on employment quality. Nevertheless, the impact of export participation on both wages and employment quality vary greatly with respect to levels of technology
Size-tuneable nanometric MRI contrast agents for the imaging of molecular weight dependent transport processes
Purpose: To evaluate size-tuneable nanomeric glycol-chitosan-DTPA-Gd conjugates as MRI contrast agents for the imaging of molecular weight (MW) dependent transport processes.
Material & Methods: Glycol chitosans (GC) – DTPA conjugates of precisely controlled MWs were synthesised and evaluated in mice against Gd-DTPA using times series of high-resolution MRI images of trunk, head, and xenograft flank tumours. All animal studies were approved by the local ethics committee and the UK authorities.
Results: GC-DTPA modification ratio was one DTPA per 3.9 – 5.13 of GC monomers. GC-DTAPGd provided overall superior contrast compared to Gd-DTPA with the duration of the
enhancement depending on MW (≥ 1h for 40kD). Kidneys showed early enhancement also in the renal pelvis suggesting renal elimination. Imaging of the head with GC-DTPA-Gd allowed detailed anatomical identification of specific blood vessels in particular with the high MW agent. Sequential high-resolution isotropic imaging of established A431 xenograft flank tumours with DTPA-Gd and GC-DTPA-Gd demonstrated that the initial delivery of the contrast agents was well correlated with blood supply. Subsequent tissue transport was primarily by diffusion and was limited by molecular weight. The data also highlight the role of heterogeneity in CA distribution that was again more prominent for the high MW agent. Conclusion: GC-DTPA-Gd with identical physical chemical properties but precisely controlled MW allow isotropic high-resolution three-dimensional imaging of molecular weight dependent transport processes which could potentially lead to clinical biomarkers for molecular weight dependent drug transport and support selection of suitable tumour models for pre-clinical development
Grey seal predation mortality on three depleted stocks in the West of Scotland : what are the implications for stock assessments?
The decrease in groundfish stocks in the North Atlantic since the mid-1900s coupled with increases in grey seal populations is responsible for an enduring controversy between fishers and conservationists regarding the role seals have played in stock declines. We used a Bayesian state-space model to investigate stock trends in the presence of grey seals and associated MSY reference points in the West of Scotland. This study provides new estimates of seal predation mortality on haddock and whiting and updates the estimates for cod, which together form the traditional main components of the mixed demersal fishery in this area. Grey seal predation mortality is greatest on cod resulting in estimates of total natural mortality higher than those used in the current ICES assessments. Seal predation mortality is low for haddock and whiting. Considering seal predation in stock assessments changes the scale of biomass and fishing mortality estimates for the three stocks. The estimates of F0.1 and FMSY are sensitive to seal predation for cod and whiting but not for haddock. In all cases MSY decreases with increased seal predation

A geometrical approach to computing free-energy landscapes from short-ranged potentials
Particles interacting with short-ranged potentials have attracted increasing interest, partly for their ability to model mesoscale systems such as colloids interacting via DNA or depletion. We consider the free-energy landscape of such systems as the range of the potential goes to zero. In this limit, the landscape is entirely defined by geometrical manifolds, plus a single control parameter. These manifolds are fundamental objects that do not depend on the details of the interaction potential and provide the starting point from which any quantity characterizing the system—equilibrium or nonequilibrium—can be computed for arbitrary potentials. To consider dynamical quantities we compute the asymptotic limit of the Fokker–Planck equation and show that it becomes restricted to the low-dimensional manifolds connected by “sticky” boundary conditions. To illustrate our theory, we compute the low-dimensional manifolds for Graphic identical particles, providing a complete description of the lowest-energy parts of the landscape including floppy modes with up to 2 internal degrees of freedom. The results can be directly tested on colloidal clusters. This limit is a unique approach for understanding energy landscapes, and our hope is that it can also provide insight into finite-range potentials.Engineering and Applied Science
Grey seal predation impairs recovery of an over-exploited fish stock
Grey seal predation has been blamed by fishers for the decline of Atlantic cod stocks and has led to calls for seal culls. In the West of Scotland, estimates of cod consumption by seals have exceeded reported catches and spawning biomass, focussing attention on the interaction between fishers and seals. Bayesian models making different assumptions about seal predation were used to estimate the size of the West of Scotland cod stock between 1985 and 2005 and the mortalities due to fishing and seal foraging. A simple population model was used to identify the likely direction of cod population change at recent mortality rates. All model configurations suggest that the total mortality of cod has remained fairly stable and high for many years regardless of the assumptions on seal predation. The high mortality explains the long-term decline of the stock. The best-fitting model suggests that mortality due to fishing reduced substantially in the decade up to 2005, but has been replaced by increased seal predation mortality on a smaller cod stock. Given total mortality estimates, the stock is unlikely to recover even at present reduced levels of fishing. Synthesis and applications. Our model offers a method of estimating seal predation mortality as part of routine stock assessments that inform fishery management. The analysis shows that predation by seals can be an important component of the total stock mortality. It also shows that assuming invariant natural mortality, as adopted in many standard fish stock assessments, may lead to incorrect perceptions of fishing mortality, over-estimating the benefits of reducing fishing mortality when there is density-dependent predation. It is essential to consider predation by top predators when formulating appropriate advice for managing the fishery
A model of meta-population dynamics for North Sea and West of Scotland cod - the dynamic consequences of natal fidelity
It is clear from a variety of data that cod (Gadus morhua) in the North Sea do not constitute a homogeneous population that will rapidly redistribute in response to local variability in exploitation. Hence, local exploitation has the potential to deplete local populations, perhaps to the extent that depensation occurs and recovery is impossible without recolonisation from other areas, with consequent loss of genetic diversity. The oceanographic, biological and behavioural processes which maintain the spatial population structures are only partly understood, and one of the key unknown factors is the extent to which codexhibit homing migrations to natal spawning areas. Here, we describe a model comprising 10 interlinked demes of cod in European waters, each representing groups of fish with a common natal origin. The spawning locations of fish in each deme are governed by a variety of rules concerning oceanographic dispersal, migration behaviour and straying. We describe numerical experiments with the model and comparisons with observations, which lead us to conclude that active homing is probably not necessary to explain some of the population structures of European cod. Separation of some sub-populations is possible through distance and oceanographic processes affecting the dispersal of eggs and larvae. However, other evidence suggests that homing may be a necessary behaviour to explain the structure of other sub-populations. Theconsequences for fisheries management of taking into account spatial population structuring are complicated. For example, recovery or recolonisation strategies require consideration not only of mortality rates in the target area for restoration, but also in the source areas for the recruits which may be far removed depending on the oceanography. Negative Estrangement: Fantasy and Race in the Drow and Drizzt Do’Urden
This essay introduces the concept of negative estrangement to help understand current cultural interventions into the norms of depicting fantasy races. First, this essay builds on Shklovsky’s concept of estrangement to describe the literary practice of negative estrangement, wherein artists craft “more evil” foes based on hybridized amalgamations of stereotypes to create antipathy toward a subject, be it monster or fantasy race. This practice is sometimes used in service of confronting the issue of race and racism, despite seeming to reify or rearticulate racist stereotypes.
This essay builds on Tolkien’s argument in favor of creating “more evil” foes to exemplify heroic action from Tolkien’s essay “Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics” as part of the structure of negative estrangement. It also builds on the sense of how, as Helen Young describes, fantasy can seem safer for the cultural work of exploring issues of race due to its apparent rhetorical distance from the real world. In allowing the non-realistic reification of fantasy races, the issue of racism can be addressed substantively without audience rejection.
The work of R. A. Salvatore is productive as a case study to understand this literary practice. R. A. Salvatore has written over 30 novels focusing on the dark elf, “drow,” character of Drizzt Do’Urden. In his writing, Salvatore demonstrates a fundamental paradox between the desire of artists to craft anti-racist narratives and the need to depict “evil” fantasy races in mass market action fantasy prose. Since 2020, the Wizards of the Coast game Dungeons & Dragons has been in the process of active revision and rewriting its handling of fantasy races. Part of the purpose of this essay is to highlight the ways that the fantasy genre is continuing change its handling of the depiction or conception of fantasy races
