Thermal effects on electron-phonon interaction in silicon nanostructures
Raman spectra from silicon nanostructures, recorded using excitation laser
power density of 1.0 kW/cm^2, is employed here to reveal the dominance of
thermal effects at temperatures higher than the room temperature. Room
temperature Raman spectrum shows only phonon confinement and Fano effects.
Raman spectra recorded at higher temperatures show increase in FWHM and
decrease in asymmetry ratio with respect to its room temperature counterpart.
Experimental Raman scattering data are analyzed successfully using theoretical
Raman line-shape generated by incorporating the temperature dependence of
phonon dispersion relation. Experimental and theoretical temperature dependent
Raman spectra are in good agreement. Although quantum confinement and Fano
effects persists, heating effects start dominating at higher temperatures than

Asymmetry to symmetry transition of Fano line-shape: Analytical derivation
An analytical derivation of Fano line-shape asymmetry ratio has been
presented here for a general case. It is shown that Fano line-shape becomes
less asymmetric as \q is increased and finally becomes completely symmetric in
the limiting condition of q equal to infinity. Asymmetry ratios of Fano
line-shapes have been calculated and are found to be in good consonance with
the reported expressions for asymmetry ratio as a function of Fano parameter.
Application of this derivation is also mentioned for explanation of asymmetry
to symmetry transition of Fano line-shape in quantum confined silicon

Symmetries of Snyder--de Sitter space and relativistic particle dynamics
We study the deformed conformal-Poincare symmetries consistent with the
Snyder--de Sitter space. A relativistic particle model invariant under these
deformed symmetries is given. This model is used to provide a gauge independent
derivation of the Snyder--de Sitter algebra. Our results are valid in the

Spectroscopic investigation of quantum confinement effects in ion implanted silicon-on-sapphire films
Crystalline Silicon-on-Sapphire (SOS) films were implanted with boron (B)
and phosphorous (P) ions. Different samples, prepared by varying the ion
dose in the range to 5 x and ion energy in the range
150-350 keV, were investigated by the Raman spectroscopy, photoluminescence
(PL) spectroscopy and glancing angle x-ray diffraction (GAXRD). The Raman
results from dose dependent B implanted samples show red-shifted and
asymmetrically broadened Raman line-shape for B dose greater than
ions cm. The asymmetry and red shift in the Raman line-shape is
explained in terms of quantum confinement of phonons in silicon nanostructures
formed as a result of ion implantation. PL spectra shows size dependent visible
luminescence at 1.9 eV at room temperature, which confirms the presence
of silicon nanostructures. Raman studies on P implanted samples were also
done as a function of ion energy. The Raman results show an amorphous top SOS
surface for sample implanted with 150 keV P ions of dose 5 x ions
cm. The nanostructures are formed when the P energy is increased to
350 keV by keeping the ion dose fixed. The GAXRD results show consistency with

before epiphyseal fusion. In 1909, when Harvey Cushing examined the skeleton of
an Irish patient who lived from 1761 to 1783,1-3 he noted an enlarged pituitary
fossa. We extracted DNA from the patient’s teeth and identified a germline mutation
in the aryl hydrocarbon–interacting protein gene (AIP). Four contemporary
Northern Irish families who presented with gigantism, acromegaly, or prolactinoma
have the same mutation and haplotype associated with the mutated gene. Using
coalescent theory, we infer that these persons share a common ancestor who lived
about 57 to 66 generations earlier
Policy of foreign direct investment liberalisation in India: implications for retail sector
This study has analysed the impact of liberalisation of Indian economy and FDI policy on the retail sector since its implementation in the 1990s. It also further analyses sub-categories by investigating its impact on the unorganised retail sector and the flow of FDI in single-brand retail and multi-brand retail sectors. A comprehensive and critical review of the existing evidence on the subject was carried out, and descriptive statistical analysis of data from 1991 to 2013 was performed which leads to conclude that the policy of FDI liberalisation has proved to provide diversification and sustainable development to the Indian economy and specifically retail sector which is considered to be one of the significant pillars of economy. Furthermore, for continuous growth of the economy, it seems vital to encourage more investment in other sectors by liberalising the restrictive policies
Magnetic Fluffy Dark Matter
We explore extensions of inelastic Dark Matter and Magnetic inelastic Dark
Matter where the WIMP can scatter to a tower of heavier states. We assume a
WIMP mass GeV and a constant splitting between
successive states keV. For the
spin-independent scattering scenario we find that the direct experiments CDMS
and XENON strongly constrain most of the DAMA/LIBRA preferred parameter space,
while for WIMPs that interact with nuclei via their magnetic moment a region of
parameter space corresponding to GeV and keV

Phylogeography of Japanese encephalitis virus:genotype is associated with climate
The circulation of vector-borne zoonotic viruses is largely determined by the overlap in the geographical distributions of virus-competent vectors and reservoir hosts. What is less clear are the factors influencing the distribution of virus-specific lineages. Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is the most important etiologic agent of epidemic encephalitis worldwide, and is primarily maintained between vertebrate reservoir hosts (avian and swine) and culicine mosquitoes. There are five genotypes of JEV: GI-V. In recent years, GI has displaced GIII as the dominant JEV genotype and GV has re-emerged after almost 60 years of undetected virus circulation. JEV is found throughout most of Asia, extending from maritime Siberia in the north to Australia in the south, and as far as Pakistan to the west and Saipan to the east. Transmission of JEV in temperate zones is epidemic with the majority of cases occurring in summer months, while transmission in tropical zones is endemic and occurs year-round at lower rates. To test the hypothesis that viruses circulating in these two geographical zones are genetically distinct, we applied Bayesian phylogeographic, categorical data analysis and phylogeny-trait association test techniques to the largest JEV dataset compiled to date, representing the envelope (E) gene of 487 isolates collected from 12 countries over 75 years. We demonstrated that GIII and the recently emerged GI-b are temperate genotypes likely maintained year-round in northern latitudes, while GI-a and GII are tropical genotypes likely maintained primarily through mosquito-avian and mosquito-swine transmission cycles. Protocol for the economic evaluation of a community-based intervention to improve growth among children under two in rural India (CARING trial)
INTRODUCTION: Undernutrition affects ∼165 million children globally and contributes up to 45% of all child deaths. India has the highest proportion of global undernutrition-related morbidity and mortality. This protocol describes the planned economic evaluation of a community-based intervention to improve growth in children under 2 years of age in two rural districts of eastern India. The intervention is being evaluated through a cluster-randomised controlled trial (cRCT, the CARING trial). METHODS AND ANALYSIS: A cost-effectiveness and cost-utility analysis nested within a cRCT will be conducted from a societal perspective, measuring programme, provider, household and societal costs. Programme costs will be collected prospectively from project accounts using a standardised tool. These will be supplemented with time sheets and key informant interviews to inform the allocation of joint costs. Direct and indirect costs incurred by providers will be collected using key informant interviews and time use surveys. Direct and indirect household costs will be collected prospectively, using time use and consumption surveys. Incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) will be calculated for the primary outcome measure, that is, cases of stunting prevented, and other outcomes such as cases of wasting prevented, cases of infant mortality averted, life years saved and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) averted. Sensitivity analyses will be conducted to assess the robustness of results. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: There is a shortage of robust evidence regarding the cost-effectiveness of strategies to improve early child growth. As this economic evaluation is nested within a large scale, cRCT, it will contribute to understanding the fiscal space for investment in early child growth, and the relative (in)efficiency of prioritising resources to this intervention over others to prevent stunting in this and other comparable contexts. The selective phosphodiesterase 4 inhibitor roflumilast and phosphodiesterase 3/4 inhibitor pumafentrine reduce clinical score and TNF expression in experimental colitis in mice.
The specific inhibition of phosphodiesterase (PDE)4 and dual inhibition of PDE3 and PDE4 has been shown to decrease inflammation by suppression of pro-inflammatory cytokine synthesis. We examined the effect of roflumilast, a selective PDE4 inhibitor marketed for severe COPD, and the investigational compound pumafentrine, a dual PDE3/PDE4 inhibitor, in the preventive dextran sodium sulfate (DSS)-induced colitis model. The clinical score, colon length, histologic score and colon cytokine production from mice with DSS-induced colitis (3.5% DSS in drinking water for 11 days) receiving either roflumilast (1 or 5 mg/kg body weight/d p.o.) or pumafentrine (1.5 or 5 mg/kg/d p.o.) were determined and compared to vehicle treated control mice. In the pumafentrine-treated animals, splenocytes were analyzed for interferon-γ (IFNγ) production and CD69 expression. Roflumilast treatment resulted in dose-dependent improvements of clinical score (weight loss, stool consistency and bleeding), colon length, and local tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα) production in the colonic tissue. These findings, however, were not associated with an improvement of the histologic score. Administration of pumafentrine at 5 mg/kg/d alleviated the clinical score, the colon length shortening, and local TNFα production. In vitro stimulated splenocytes after in vivo treatment with pumafentrine showed a significantly lower state of activation and production of IFNγ compared to no treatment in vivo.
