Wicked, Hard and Supple: An Examination of Suzanne Valadon's Nude Drawings of Young Maurice
This article examines the nude drawings Suzanne Valadon made of her young son, Maurice Utrillo. These drawings, depicting Utrillo from late childhood until adolescence, began Valadon's interest in the male nude, which she carried into her later career. Though children appeared often in her work, the drawings of Utrillo are complicated by the relationship between the artist and subject.Publisher allows immediate open acces
An analysis of an industry sponsored governance development intervention : the case of Dairy NZ's Mark and Measure programme : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Business Studies in Management at Massey University, Palmerston North, New Zealand
Appendices 6 & 7 removed due to copyright reasonsA plethora of ‘good’ corporate governance prescriptions are ascribed to boards. Yet there is little research on the influence of corporate governance prescriptions on businesses. This research aims to investigate the impact of the DairyNZ Mark and Measure Farm Business Governance Programme (the Mark and Measure course). This research uses Kirkpatrick’s (1958) Four Level Model to evaluate the Mark and Measure course. The author employs an embedded case study with a sequential mixed methods design to examine the Mark and Measure course. The sequential mixed methods design included a document analysis, a quantitative comparative pre and post intervention analysis, and five qualitative semi-structured interviews. The participants in the research were made up of closely-held SME’s and family businesses. The results show inconsistencies in the conceptualisation of corporate governance in academia, the Mark and Measure course, and the responses of the interviewed participants. There was an increase in most of the four levels in Kirkpatrick’s model. However, caution needs to be applied to results as there are methodological issues with the employed survey instrument
Modular subvarieties of arithmetic quotients of bounded symmetric domains
Arithmetic quotients are quotients of bounded symmetric domains by arithmetic
groups, and modular subvarieties of arithmetic quotients are themselves
arithmetic quotients of lower dimension which live on arithmetic quotients, by
an embedding induced from an inclusion of groups of hermitian type. We show the
existence of such modular subvarieties, drawing on earlier work of the author.
If is a fixed arithmetic subgroup, maximal in some sense, then we
introduce the notion of ``-integral symmetric'' subgroups, which in
turn defines a notion of ``integral modular subvarieties'', and we show that
there are finitely many such on an (isotropic, i.e, non-compact) arithmetic
variety.Comment: 48 pages, also available at http://www.mathematik.uni-kl.de/~wwwagag/

GASB Statement No. 31: Why No Controversy?
Fair value reporting of investments in the financial statements of commercial enterprises is required under FASB Statement No. 115. The standard created much controversy when issued due to provisions that changes in fair values of certain investments were recognized in the operating statement. A major concern to many organizations was the volatility these recognized, but unrealized, changes in fair value would create in reported earnings. When the GASB issued Statement No. 31 requiring fair value reporting of investments there was little controversy concerning volatility to reported earnings of governmental entities, even though the standard required much broader application of fair value reporting. This study examined a possible explanation for the lack of controversy surrounding fair value reporting in the public sector. An analysis of the financial reports of the major U.S. municipalities provided empirical evidence of the significance of investments earnings to municipal revenues, investment assets to total assets, and the significance of changes in fair values of investments to investment earnings and total revenues. Financial reports and accompanying notes for fiscal years 1994 to 1998 were examined. Results indicate that overall, investments earnings were not a significant component of governmental fund revenues. However, investment earnings were significant for certain governmental fund types. The difference between costs and fair market values of investments also did not appear to be material to most governmental funds. The minimal impact of the fair value reporting on earnings offers a partial explanation for the lack of debate surrounding adoption of fair value reporting of investment by governmental entities
