Theories for influencer identification in complex networks
In social and biological systems, the structural heterogeneity of interaction
networks gives rise to the emergence of a small set of influential nodes, or
influencers, in a series of dynamical processes. Although much smaller than the
entire network, these influencers were observed to be able to shape the
collective dynamics of large populations in different contexts. As such, the
successful identification of influencers should have profound implications in
various real-world spreading dynamics such as viral marketing, epidemic
outbreaks and cascading failure. In this chapter, we first summarize the
centrality-based approach in finding single influencers in complex networks,
and then discuss the more complicated problem of locating multiple influencers
from a collective point of view. Progress rooted in collective influence
theory, belief-propagation and computer science will be presented. Finally, we
present some applications of influencer identification in diverse real-world
systems, including online social platforms, scientific publication, brain
networks and socioeconomic systems.Comment: 24 pages, 6 figure
Quantum Convolutional Neural Networks
We introduce and analyze a novel quantum machine learning model motivated by
convolutional neural networks. Our quantum convolutional neural network (QCNN)
makes use of only variational parameters for input sizes of
qubits, allowing for its efficient training and implementation on realistic,
near-term quantum devices. The QCNN architecture combines the multi-scale
entanglement renormalization ansatz and quantum error correction. We explicitly
illustrate its potential with two examples. First, QCNN is used to accurately
recognize quantum states associated with 1D symmetry-protected topological
phases. We numerically demonstrate that a QCNN trained on a small set of
exactly solvable points can reproduce the phase diagram over the entire
parameter regime and also provide an exact, analytical QCNN solution. As a
second application, we utilize QCNNs to devise a quantum error correction
scheme optimized for a given error model. We provide a generic framework to
simultaneously optimize both encoding and decoding procedures and find that the
resultant scheme significantly outperforms known quantum codes of comparable
complexity. Finally, potential experimental realization and generalizations of

Observation of the Baryonic Flavor-Changing Neutral Current Decay Lambda_b -> Lambda mu+ mu-
We report the first observation of the baryonic flavor-changing neutral
current decay Lambda_b -> Lambda mu+ mu- with 24 signal events and a
statistical significance of 5.8 Gaussian standard deviations. This measurement
uses ppbar collisions data sample corresponding to 6.8fb-1 at sqrt{s}=1.96TeV
collected by the CDF II detector at the Tevatron collider. The total and
differential branching ratios for Lambda_b -> Lambda mu+ mu- are measured. We
find B(Lambda_b -> Lambda mu+ mu-) = [1.73+-0.42(stat)+-0.55(syst)] x 10^{-6}.
We also report the first measurement of the differential branching ratio of B_s
-> phi mu+ mu- using 49 signal events. In addition, we report branching ratios
for B+ -> K+ mu+ mu-, B0 -> K0 mu+ mu-, and B -> K*(892) mu+ mu- decays.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures, 4 tables. Submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
Storage stability of lysostaphin solution and its pulmonary delivery
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has become a leading causative pathogen of nosocomial pneumonia with an alarming in-hospital mortality rate of 30%. Last resort antibiotic, vancomycin, has been increasingly used to treat MRSA infections, but the rapid emergence of vancomycin-resistant strains urges the development of alternative treatment strategies against MRSA-associated pneumonia. The bacteriolytic enzyme, lysostaphin, targeting the cell wall peptidoglycan of S. aureus, has been considered as a promising alternative for MRSA infections. Its proteinaceous nature is likely benefit from direct delivery to the lungs, but the challenges for successful pulmonary delivery of lysostaphin lying on a suitable inhalation device and a formulation with sufficient storage stability. In this study, the applicability of a vibrating mesh nebulizer (Aerogen Solo®) and a soft mist inhaler (Respimat®) was investigated. Both devices were capable of aerosolizing lysostaphin solution into inhalable droplets and caused minimum antibacterial activity loss. In addition, lysostaphin stabilized with phosphate-buffered saline and 0.1% Tween 80 was proved to have acceptable stability for at least 12 months when stored at 4 °C. These promising data encourage further clinical development of lysostaphin for management of MRSA-associated lung infections. Observation of a ppb mass threshoud enhancement in \psi^\prime\to\pi^+\pi^-J/\psi(J/\psi\to\gamma p\bar{p}) decay
The decay channel
is studied using a sample of events collected
by the BESIII experiment at BEPCII. A strong enhancement at threshold is
observed in the invariant mass spectrum. The enhancement can be fit
with an -wave Breit-Wigner resonance function with a resulting peak mass of
and a
narrow width that is at the 90% confidence level.
These results are consistent with published BESII results. These mass and width

Measurement of the Production Cross Section and Search for Anomalous and Couplings in Collisions at TeV
This Letter describes the current most precise measurement of the boson
pair production cross section and most sensitive test of anomalous
and couplings in collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 1.96
TeV. The candidates are reconstructed from decays containing two charged
leptons and two neutrinos, where the charged leptons are either electrons or
muons. Using data collected by the CDF II detector from 3.6 fb of
integrated luminosity, a total of 654 candidate events are observed with an
expected background contribution of events. The measured total
cross section is pb, which is in good agreement
with the standard model prediction. The same data sample is used to place

A Loss of Function Screen of Identified Genome-Wide Association Study Loci Reveals New Genes Controlling Hematopoiesis
The formation of mature cells by blood stem cells is very well understood at the cellular level and we know many of the key transcription factors that control fate decisions. However, many upstream signalling and downstream effector processes are only partially understood. Genome wide association studies (GWAS) have been particularly useful in providing new directions to dissect these pathways. A GWAS meta-analysis identified 68 genetic loci controlling platelet size and number. Only a quarter of those genes, however, are known regulators of hematopoiesis. To determine function of the remaining genes we performed a medium-throughput genetic screen in zebrafish using antisense morpholino oligonucleotides (MOs) to knock down protein expression, followed by histological analysis of selected genes using a wide panel of different hematopoietic markers. The information generated by the initial knockdown was used to profile phenotypes and to position candidate genes hierarchically in hematopoiesis. Further analysis of brd3a revealed its essential role in differentiation but not maintenance and survival of thrombocytes. Using the from-GWAS-to-function strategy we have not only identified a series of genes that represent novel regulators of thrombopoiesis and hematopoiesis, but this work also represents, to our knowledge, the first example of a functional genetic screening strategy that is a critical step toward obtaining biologically relevant functional data from GWA study for blood cell traits
Search for rare quark-annihilation decays, B --> Ds(*) Phi
We report on searches for B- --> Ds- Phi and B- --> Ds*- Phi. In the context
of the Standard Model, these decays are expected to be highly suppressed since
they proceed through annihilation of the b and u-bar quarks in the B- meson.
Our results are based on 234 million Upsilon(4S) --> B Bbar decays collected
with the BABAR detector at SLAC. We find no evidence for these decays, and we
set Bayesian 90% confidence level upper limits on the branching fractions BF(B-
--> Ds- Phi) Ds*- Phi)<1.2x10^(-5). These results

Marine Cyanobacteria Compounds with Anticancer Properties: Implication of Apoptosis
Marine cyanobacteria have been proved to be an important source of potential anticancer drugs. Although several compounds were found to be cytotoxic to cancer cells in culture, the pathways by which cells are affected are still poorly elucidated. For some compounds, cancer cell death was attributed to an implication of apoptosis through morphological apoptotic features, implication of caspases and proteins of the Bcl-2 family, and other mechanisms such as interference with microtubules dynamics, cell cycle arrest and inhibition of proteases other than caspases
