    A flight experiment to determine GPS photochemical contamination accumulation rates

    It was recently suggested that photochemically deposited contamination, originating from volatiles outgassed by a spacecraft, may be responsible for the anomalous degradation in power seen on the GPS Block 1 vehicles. In an attempt to confirm, or deny, the photochemical deposition rates predicted, a study was undertaken to design a flight experiment to be incorporated on the GPS vehicles currently in production. The objective was to develop an inexpensive, light weight instrument package that would give information on the contamination levels within a few months of launch. Three types of apparatus were studied, Quartz Crystal Microbalances, (QCM's), modified solar cells, and calorimeters. A calorimeter was selected due primarily to its impact on the production schedule of the GPS vehicles. An analysis of the sensitivity of the final design is compared to the predicted contamination accumulation rates in order to determine how long after launch it will take the experiment to show the effects of photochemical contamination

Senior thesis, Kansas State Agricultural College, 1900.Morse Department of Special CollectionsIntroduction: While the various glass structures are generally distinguished according to their use, as Rose houses, Palm houses, Store houses, Graperies, etc., for our present purpose, it will be well to first consider them from the builder’s standpoint, as lean-to, span roof, etc. These names have been applied from the various shapes that may be given to the houses. While any of these forms may be used for all purposes, each one of them is particularly adapted to the growth of certain plants; and as they each have their special advantages and disadvantages, they should all be considered. However, as the space is too limited for the treatment of all the various forms, I will consider simply the construction of an even span house. When erected in connection with some other building, the aspect and slope cannot always be regulated; but, when possible, greenhouses for this purpose should be on the south slope, so that no ray of light or heat will be cut off, either from the east or west. If against some other structure, it should be built north and south, with its north end next the other building. When locating a detached house, a level spot is not objectionable, if good drainage can be secured; but if it can be located at the top of a south and westerly slope, it is all the better, as there the sun is available for extra hours at both ends of the day. If the spot chosen is not level, it should be graded, if possible. A slope of two or three inches to sixty feet is not objectionable, for it will serve to carry off the drain from the gutters; and in a group of houses, while it is preferable that each house should be practically level, if the land selected cannot be readily graded so as to bring the house on the same level, there would be no serious objection to having the houses ranged one above the other, in regular tiers

    The Turbulent Warm Ionized Medium: Emission Measure Distribution and MHD Simulations

    We present an analysis of the distribution of H-alpha emission measures for the warm ionized medium (WIM) of the Galaxy using data from the Wisconsin H-Alpha Mapper (WHAM) Northern Sky Survey. Our sample is restricted to Galactic latitudes |b| > 10. We removed sightlines intersecting nineteen high-latititude classical H II regions, leaving only sightlines that sample the diffuse WIM. The distribution of EM sin |b| for the full sample is poorly characterized by a single normal distribution, but is extraordinarily well fit by a lognormal distribution, with = 0.146 +/- 0.001 and standard deviation 0.190 +/- 0.001. drops from 0.260 +/- 0.002 at Galactic latitude 10<|b|<30 to 0.038 +/- 0.002 at Galactic latitude 60<|b|<90. The distribution may widen slightly at low Galactic latitude. We compare the observed EM distribution function to the predictions of three-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic simulations of isothermal turbulence within a non-stratified interstellar medium. We find that the distribution of EM sin |b| is well described by models of mildy supersonic turbulence with a sonic Mach number of ~1.4-2.4. The distribution is weakly sensitive to the magnetic field strength. The model also successfully predicts the distribution of dispersion measures of pulsars and H-alpha line profiles. In the best fitting model, the turbulent WIM occupies a vertical path length of 400-500 pc within the 1.0-1.8 kpc scale height of the layer. The WIM gas has a lognormal distribution of densities with a most probable electron density n_{pk} = 0.03 cm^{-3}. We also discuss the implications of these results for interpreting the filling factor, the power requirement, and the magnetic field of the WIM.Comment: 16 pages, 13 figures, ApJ in press.     Insulin clearance and the incidence of type 2 diabetes in Hispanics and African Americans: the IRAS Family Study.

    ObjectiveWe aimed to identify factors that are independently associated with the metabolic clearance rate of insulin (MCRI) and to examine the association of MCRI with incident type 2 diabetes in nondiabetic Hispanics and African Americans.Research design and methodsWe investigated 1,116 participants in the Insulin Resistance Atherosclerosis Study (IRAS) Family Study with baseline examinations from 2000 to 2002 and follow-up examinations from 2005 to 2006. Insulin sensitivity (S(I)), acute insulin response (AIR), and MCRI were determined at baseline from frequently sampled intravenous glucose tolerance tests. MCRI was calculated as the ratio of the insulin dose over the incremental area under the curve of insulin. Incident diabetes was defined as fasting glucose ≥126 mg/dL or antidiabetic medication use by self-report.ResultsWe observed that S(I) and HDL cholesterol were independent positive correlates of MCRI, whereas fasting insulin, fasting glucose, subcutaneous adipose tissue, visceral adipose tissue, and AIR were independent negative correlates (all P &lt; 0.05) at baseline. After 5 years of follow-up, 71 (6.4%) participants developed type 2 diabetes. Lower MCRI was associated with a higher risk of incident diabetes after adjusting for demographics, lifestyle factors, HDL cholesterol, indexes of obesity and adiposity, and insulin secretion (odds ratio 2.01 [95% CI 1.30-3.10], P = 0.0064, per one-SD decrease in loge-transformed MCRI).ConclusionsOur data showed that lower MCRI predicts the incidence of type 2 diabetes

    WHAM Observations of H-alpha Emission from High Velocity Clouds in the M, A, and C Complexes

    The first observations of the recently completed Wisconsin H-Alpha Mapper (WHAM) facility include a study of emission lines from high velocity clouds in the M, A, and C complexes, with most of the observations on the M I cloud. We present results including clear detections of H-alpha emission from all three complexes with intensities ranging from 0.06 R to 0.20 R. In every observed direction where there is significant high velocity H I gas seen in the 21 cm line we have found associated ionized hydrogen emitting the H-alpha line. The velocities of the H-alpha and 21 cm emission are well correlated in every case except one, but the intensities are not correlated. There is some evidence that the ionized gas producing the H-alpha emission envelopes the 21 cm emitting neutral gas but the H-alpha "halo", if present, is not large. If the H-alpha emission arises from the photoionization of the H I clouds, then the implied Lyman continuum flux F_{LC} at the location of the clouds ranges from 1.3 to 4.2 x 10^5 photons cm^{-2} s^{-1}. If, on the other hand, the ionization is due to a shock arising from the collision of the high-velocity gas with an ambient medium in the halo, then the density of the pre-shocked gas can be constrained. We have also detected the [S II] 6716 angstrom line from the M I cloud and have evidence that the [S II] to H-alpha ratio varies with location on the cloud.Comment: 32 pages, 18 figures, to appear in ApJ (Sept. 10, 1998

    Probing magnetic fields with multi-frequency polarized synchrotron emission

    We investigate the problem of probing the local spatial structure of the magnetic field of the interstellar medium using multi-frequency polarized maps of the synchrotron emission at radio wavelengths. We focus in this paper on the three-dimensional reconstruction of the largest scales of the magnetic field, relying on the internal depolarization (due to differential Faraday rotation) of the emitting medium as a function of electromagnetic frequency. We argue that multi-band spectroscopy in the radio wavelengths, developed in the context of high-redshift extragalactic HI lines, can be a very useful probe of the 3D magnetic field structure of our Galaxy when combined with a Maximum A Posteriori reconstruction technique. When starting from a fair approximation of the magnetic field, we are able to recover the true one by using a linearized version of the corresponding inverse problem. The spectral analysis of this problem allows us to specify the best sampling strategy in electromagnetic frequency and predicts a spatially anisotropic distribution of posterior errors. The reconstruction method is illustrated for reference fields extracted from realistic magneto-hydrodynamical simulations

    Optical interconnect solution with plasmonic modulator and Ge photodetector array

    We report on an optical chip-to-chip interconnect solution, thereby demonstrating plasmonics as a solution for ultra-dense, high-speed short-reach communications. The interconnect comprises a densely integrated plasmonic Mach-Zehnder modulator array that is packaged with standard driving electronics. On the receiver side, a germanium photodetector array is integrated with trans-impedance amplifiers. A multicore fiber provides a compact optical interface to the array.
