As a result of deep demographic, health and social changes, as well as adjustments to public health policy that now seeks the maximum involvement of family members, the relationship between the role of caregiver and employment has observed many changes during the past decades. Using the spanish Survey on Disability, Deficiency and Health Status we investigate the relationship between co-residing with or caring for people with disabilities and employment using multivariate logistic regression analysis. Results indicate that it is not gender but the role as caregiver that is the main determinant of being employed. It is also found that both roles become more burdensome at the expense of gender equality in homes that have to cope with the disability of one of its members

Child Cognitive Development as Examined Using the Family Stress Model

    Get PDF
This study used the Family Stress Model to investigate the relationship between economic distress and child cognitive development. A number of family and community processes have been theorized to mediate the relationship between income and child cognitive functioning. Warm parenting, parental stress, and punitive parenting practices were examined as possible mediators in a sample of 12,440 kindergarten children from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study - Kindergarten (ECLS-K). Cognitive development was evaluated by reading and mathematical standardized tests, and economic distress was measured using the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food Insecurity Scale. The results of this study found support for the link between economic distress and all three described parenting practices. However, this study was not able to validate the idea behind the Family Stress Model which proposes that the link between financial distress and child cognitive development is mediated by parenting practices. In addition, further results did not support the notion that financial problems have a longitudinal influence on child cognitive development

A New Method for Broadband Surface Acoustic Wave Diffraction Analysis

    Get PDF
This thesis describes an innovative technique for determining the impulse response of a SAW device including the effects of diffraction on both isotropic and anisotropic substrates. The approach presented is unique in that it determines the point-to-point impulse response for the isotropic case using the two-dimensional wave equation, and utilizes a double integral reduction technique to determine the tap-to-tap response, thereby significantly reducing the complexity of the calculations involved. An extension is then made to describe the impulse response of two cascaded transducers of arbitrary geometry, along with some simplifying cases. Previous attempts to model diffraction effects generally utilized either the Fresnel Integral or the Angular Spectrum of Plane Waves approach. The Fresnel Integral technique is inherently adequate to describe diffraction effects accurately only for the narrowband case, while the Angular Spectrum of Plane Waves requires an integration over frequency if the broadband case is to be considered. The approach presented in this thesis provides an impulse response which is valid over a wide range of frequencies, which allows for an accurate description of diffraction effects for the broadband case. The isotropic impulse response is used as an approximation to the anisotropic response, taking into account the variation of surface wave speed and coupling coefficient with propagation direction

Strategies for Improving Sleep Health in Nurses

    Get PDF
Loss of sleep affects an individual both physically and mentally. Health professionals with poor quality of sleep are at risk for patient medication errors and poor patient outcomes. Understanding the different dynamics of what may develop because of lack of sleep may motivate nurses to improve sleep health. Ways for improving sleep health are very basic and effective when addressed in the correct manner. Nurses, as well as other healthcare professionals, especially those who work irregular or night shifts, are at risk of sleep loss and/or sleep deprivation. This project, which was introduced in the style of a presentation/discussion, provided an evidence-based educational power point related to the effects of poor sleep quality, and sleep health promotion activities to enhance sleep health at a local 135 bed community hospital in Central Idaho. Thirteen nurses and eleven nursing students participated (n=24). Responses from participants were similar in that they all agreed they were affected by sleep loss. Nurses and the administrative staff must acknowledge and advocate for the improvement of sleep health. Improving sleep health may enhance personal health and work effectiveness and quality. Administrative personnel need to revisit the 12 hour shift policy, as well as investigate through on-site surveys the impact of shift work, staff meeting scheduling for night shift staff, overtime/call-back policies, and staffing policies that are sleep health-friendly
