Frobenius subgroups of free profinite products
We solve an open problem of Herfort and Ribes: Profinite Frobenius groups of
certain type do occur as closed subgroups of free profinite products of two
profinite groups. This also solves a question of Pop about prosolvable
subgroups of free profinite products.Comment: to appear in the Bulletin of the LM
Markov Chain Monte Carlo: Can We Trust the Third Significant Figure?
Current reporting of results based on Markov chain Monte Carlo computations
could be improved. In particular, a measure of the accuracy of the resulting
estimates is rarely reported. Thus we have little ability to objectively assess
the quality of the reported estimates. We address this issue in that we discuss
why Monte Carlo standard errors are important, how they can be easily
calculated in Markov chain Monte Carlo and how they can be used to decide when
to stop the simulation. We compare their use to a popular alternative in the
context of two examples.Comment: Published in at http://dx.doi.org/10.1214/08-STS257 the Statistical

Congruence schemes
A new category of algebro-geometric objects is defined. This construction is
a vast generalization of existing F1-theories, as it contains the the theory of
monoid schemes on the one hand and classical algebraic theory, e.g.
Grothendieck schemes, on the the other. It also gives a handy description of
Berkovich subdomains and thus contains Berkovich's approach to abstract
skeletons. Further it complements the theory of monoid schemes in view of
number theoretic applications as congruence schemes encode number theoretical
information as opposed to combinatorial data which are seen by monoid schemes
Hopping magnetoresistance in ion irradiated monolayer graphene
Magnetoresistance (MR) of ion irradiated monolayer graphene samples with
variable-range hopping (VRH) mechanism of conductivity was measured at
temperatures down to K in magnetic fields up to T. It was
observed that in perpendicular magnetic fields, hopping resistivity
decreases, which corresponds to negative MR (NMR), while parallel magnetic
field results in positive MR (PMR) at low temperatures. NMR is explained on the
basis of the "orbital" model in which perpendicular magnetic field suppresses
the destructive interference of many paths through the intermediate sites in
the total probability of the long-distance tunneling in the VRH regime. At low
fields, a quadratic dependence () of NMR is observed,
while at , the quadratic dependence is replaced by the linear one. It
was found that all NMR curves for different samples and different temperatures
could be merged into common dependence when plotted as a function of .
It is shown that in agreement with predictions of the
"orbital" model. The obtained values of allowed also to estimate the
localization radius of charge carriers for samples with different degree
of disorder. PMR in parallel magnetic fields is explained by suppression of
hopping transitions via double occupied states due to alignment of electron
spins.Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures. As accepted for publication on Physica
Endocrine Disorders as a Contributory Factor to Neoplasia in SJL/J Mice
We studied the endocrine status of SJL/J mice. Light and electron microscopy revealed that the adenohypophyses of both sexes became progressively infiltrated with an abnormal number of gonadotropinproducing cells that probably secreted large amounts of luteotropic hormone. The ovaries had numerous large corpora lutea even in animals over 1 year of age with reticulum cell neoplasms. The adrenal cortexes of female mice showed no regression of the reticular zone. In accordance with the anomalous condition of the adenohypophysis and ovary, females had abnormal estrous cycles, with prolonged diestrus and consequent reduction in fertility. These data were discussed in the context of hormone environment versus onset of systemic neoplastic disease and the relationship between hormone dependence and leukemic virus expressio
Threshold electric field in unconventional density waves
As it is well known most of charge density wave (CDW) and spin density wave
(SDW) exhibit the nonlinear transport with well defined threshold electric
field E_T. Here we study theoretically the threshold electric field of
unconventional density waves. We find that the threshold field increases
monotonically with temperature without divergent behaviour at T_c, unlike the
one in conventional CDW. The present result in the 3D weak pinning limit
appears to describe rather well the threshold electric field observed recently
in the low-temperature phase (LTP) of alpha-(BEDT-TTF)_2KHg(SCN)_4.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
