Cost-benefit analysis of housing-related support services for homeless people: Cyrenians case study
Northumbria University were commissioned by the Cyrenians to undertake research into the value of thehousing-related support services that they provide to service users. Specifically, the research team wereasked to:- Identify the social and financial value of housing-related support services provided by the Cyrenians;- Identify factors linked to (un)successful ‘move-on’;- Identify barriers to progression; and,- Identify possible service developments, where possible
Exposure of benthic invertebrates to sediment vibration: From laboratory experiments to outdoor simulated pile-driving
Activities directly interacting with the seabed, such as pile-driving, can produce vibrations that have the potential to impact benthic invertebrates within their vicinity. This stimuli may interfere with crucial behaviors such as foraging and predator avoidance, and the sensitivity to vibration is largely unknown. Here, the responsiveness of benthic invertebrates to sediment vibration is discussed in relation to laboratory and semi-field trials with two marine species: the mussel (Mytilus edulis) and hermit crab (Pagurus bernhardus). Sensory threshold curves were produced for both species in controlled laboratory conditions, followed by small-scale pile-driving exposures in the field. The merits of behavioral indicators are discussed, in addition to using physiological measures, as a method of determining reception and measuring responses. The measurement and sensors required for sediment vibration quantification are also discussed. Response and threshold data were related to measurements taken in the vicinity of anthropogenic sources, allowing a link between responsiveness and actual operations. The impact of pile-driving on sediment-dwelling invertebrates has received relatively little research, yet the data here suggest that such activities are likely to impact key coastal species which play important roles within the marine environment

All Rights Reserved.Bioluminescence imaging (BLI) enables real-time, noninvasive tracking of infection in vivo and longitudinal infection studies. In this study, a bioluminescent Francisella tularensis strain, SCHU S4-lux, was used to develop an inhalational infection model in BALB/c mice. Mice were infected intranasally, and the progression of infection was monitored in real time using BLI. A bioluminescent signal was detectable from 3 days postinfection (3 dpi), initially in the spleen and then in the liver and lymph nodes, before finally becoming systemic. The level of bioluminescent signal correlated with bacterial numbers in vivo, enabling noninvasive quantification of bacterial burdens in tissues. Treatment with levofloxacin (commencing at 4 dpi) significantly reduced the BLI signal. Furthermore, BLI was able to distinguish noninvasively between different levofloxacin treatment regimens and to identify sites of relapse following treatment cessation. These data demonstrate that BLI and SCHU S4-lux are suitable for the study of F. tularensis pathogenesis and the evaluation of therapeutics for tularemia.Peer reviewedFinal Accepted Versio

Short GRB 130603B: Discovery of a jet break in the optical and radio afterglows, and a mysterious late-time X-ray excess
We present radio, optical/NIR, and X-ray observations of the afterglow of the
short-duration 130603B, and uncover a break in the radio and optical bands at
0.5 d after the burst, best explained as a jet break with an inferred jet
opening angle of 4-8 deg. GRB 130603B is only the third short GRB with a radio
afterglow detection to date, and the first time that a jet break is evident in
the radio band. We model the temporal evolution of the spectral energy
distribution to determine the burst explosion properties and find an
isotropic-equivalent kinetic energy of (0.6-1.7) x 10^51 erg and a circumburst
density of 5 x 10^-3-30 cm^-3. From the inferred opening angle of GRB 130603B,
we calculate beaming-corrected energies of Egamma (0.5-2) x 10^49 erg and EK
(0.1-1.6) x 10^49 erg. Along with previous measurements and lower limits we
find a median short GRB opening angle of 10 deg. Using the all-sky observed
rate of 10 Gpc^-3 yr^-1, this implies a true short GRB rate of 20 yr^-1 within
200 Mpc, the Advanced LIGO/VIRGO sensitivity range for neutron star binary
mergers. Finally, we uncover evidence for significant excess emission in the
X-ray afterglow of GRB 130603B at >1 d and conclude that the additional energy
component could be due to fall-back accretion or spin-down energy from a

Anthropometric indices of Gambian children after one or three annual rounds of mass drug administration with azithromycin for trachoma control.
BACKGROUND: Mass drug administration (MDA) with azithromycin, carried out for the control of blinding trachoma, has been linked to reduced mortality in children. While the mechanism behind this reduction is unclear, it may be due, in part, to improved nutritional status via a potential reduction in the community burden of infectious disease. To determine whether MDA with azithromycin improves anthropometric indices at the community level, we measured the heights and weights of children aged 1 to 4 years in communities where one (single MDA arm) or three annual rounds (annual MDA arm) of azithromycin had been distributed. METHODS: Data collection took place three years after treatment in the single MDA arm and one year after the final round of treatment in the annual MDA arm. Mean height-for-age, weight-for-age and weight-for-height z scores were compared between treatment arms. RESULTS: No significant differences in mean height-for-age, weight-for-age or weight-for-height z scores were found between the annual MDA and single MDA arms, nor was there a significant reduction in prevalence of stunting, wasting or underweight between arms. CONCLUSIONS: Our data do not provide evidence that community MDA with azithromycin improved anthropometric outcomes of children in The Gambia. This may suggest reductions in mortality associated with azithromycin MDA are due to a mechanism other than improved nutritional status
