Effective fuel temperature of wwer-1000
The main temperature characteristics of a pressurized water reactor are distinguished, supporting its safety and reliable operation. The special role of the uranium fuel effective temperature is emphasized and the accuracy of the analytical determination of the power effect is increased. The calculation of the temperature distribution along the radius of the fuel rod was carried out taking into account the temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity UO2. The design procedure was corrected for using the Finca-Ronchi dependence for the thermal conductivity of 95% density of the theoretical one
MAC-Oriented Programmable Terahertz PHY via Graphene-based Yagi-Uda Antennas
Graphene is enabling a plethora of applications in a wide range of fields due
to its unique electrical, mechanical, and optical properties. In the realm of
wireless communications, graphene shows great promise for the implementation of
miniaturized and tunable antennas in the terahertz band. These unique
advantages open the door to new reconfigurable antenna structures which, in
turn, enable novel communication protocols at different levels of the stack.
This paper explores both aspects by, first, presenting a terahertz
Yagi-Uda-like antenna concept that achieves reconfiguration both in frequency
and beam direction simultaneously. Then, a programmable antenna controller
design is proposed to expose the reconfigurability to the PHY and MAC layers,
and several examples of its applicability are given. The performance and cost
of the proposed scheme is evaluated through full-wave simulations and
comparative analysis, demonstrating reconfigurability at nanosecond granularity
with overheads below 0.02 mm and 0.2 mW.Comment: Accepted for presentation in IEEE WCNC '1
Healthy Dietary Interventions and Lipoprotein (a) Plasma Levels: Results from the Omni Heart Trial
Background: Increased lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] levels are associated with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease. Studies of dietary interventions on changes in Lp(a) are sparse. We aimed to compare the effects of three healthy dietary interventions differing in macronutrient content on Lp(a) concentration. Methods: Secondary analysis of a randomized, 3-period crossover feeding study including 155 (89 blacks; 66 whites) individuals. Participants were given DASH-type healthy diets rich in carbohydrates [Carb], in protein [Prot] or in unsaturated fat [Unsat Fat] for 6 weeks each. Plasma Lp(a) concentration was assessed at baseline and after each diet. Results: Compared to baseline, all interventional diets increased mean Lp(a) by 2 to 5 mg/dl. Unsat Fat increased Lp(a) less than Prot with a difference of 1.0 mg/dl (95% CI, −0.5, 2.5; p = 0.196) in whites and 3.7 mg/dl (95% CI, 2.4, 5.0; p<0.001) in blacks (p-value between races = 0.008); Unsat Fat increased Lp(a) less than Carb with a difference of −0.6 mg/dl, 95% CI, −2.1, 0.9; p = 0.441) in whites and −1.5 mg/dl (95% CI, −0.2, −2.8; p = 0.021) in blacks (p-value between races = 0.354). Prot increased Lp(a) more than Carb with a difference of 0.4 mg/dl (95% CI, −1.1, 1.9; p = 0.597) in whites and 2.2 mg/dl (95%CI, 0.9, 3.5; p = 0.001) in blacks (p-value between races = 0.082). Conclusion: Diets high in unsaturated fat increased Lp(a) levels less than diets rich in carbohydrate or protein with greater changes in blacks than whites. Our results suggest that substitutions with dietary mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids in healthy diets may be preferable over protein or carbohydrates with regards to Lp(a). Principles for developing benchmark criteria for staff training in responsible gambling
One approach to minimizing the negative consequences of excessive gambling is staff training to reduce the rate of the development of new cases of harm or disorder within their customers. The primary goal of the present study was to assess suitable benchmark criteria for the training of gambling employees at casinos and lottery retailers. The study utilised the Delphi Method, a survey with one qualitative and two quantitative phases. A total of 21 invited international experts in the responsible gambling field participated in all three phases. A total of 75 performance indicators were outlined and assigned to six categories: (1) criteria of content, (2) modelling, (3) qualification of trainer, (4) framework conditions, (5) sustainability and (6) statistical indicators. Nine of the 75 indicators were rated as very important by 90 % or more of the experts. Unanimous support for importance was given to indicators such as (1) comprehensibility and (2) concrete action-guidance for handling with problem gamblers, Additionally, the study examined the implementation of benchmarking, when it should be conducted, and who should be responsible. Results indicated that benchmarking should be conducted every 1–2 years regularly and that one institution should be clearly defined and primarily responsible for benchmarking. The results of the present study provide the basis for developing a benchmarking for staff training in responsible gambling
A comparative study of Tam3 and Ac transposition in transgenic tobacco and petunia plants
Transposition of the Anthirrinum majus Tam3 element and the Zea mays Ac element has been monitored in petunia and tobacco plants. Plant vectors were constructed with the transposable elements cloned into the leader sequence of a marker gene. Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated leaf disc transformation was used to introduce the transposable element constructs into plant cells. In transgenic plants, excision of the transposable element restores gene expression and results in a clearly distinguishable phenotype. Based on restored expression of the hygromycin phosphotransferase II (HPTII) gene, we established that Tam3 excises in 30% of the transformed petunia plants and in 60% of the transformed tobacco plants. Ac excises from the HPTII gene with comparable frequencies (30%) in both plant species. When the β-glucuronidase (GUS) gene was used to detect transposition of Tam3, a significantly lower excision frequency (13%) was found in both plant species. It could be shown that deletion of parts of the transposable elements Tam3 and Ac, removing either one of the terminal inverted repeats (TIR) or part of the presumptive transposase coding region, abolished the excision from the marker genes. This demonstrates that excision of the transposable element Tam3 in heterologous plant species, as documented for the autonomous element Ac, also depends on both properties. Southern blot hybridization shows the expected excision pattern and the reintegration of Tam3 and Ac elements into the genome of tobacco plants.

The potential of this process technology for nanoscale functional devices is demonstrated by MOSFETs with 12 nm gate length and optimized photonic devices with ultrahigh Q-factors.</p
An Analysis of the Demands for Water from the Private Sector in a Sub-Arctic Urban Area
This report was prepared by Institute personnel from an incomplete manuscript
left by the author when he terminated his employment at the University of
Alaska in 1967. The Institute feels the report fairly describes the work
reported by Dr. Haring, since no conceptual changes were made in the content.
We feel it to be unfortunate that Dr. Haring refused to cooperate fully with

The Race Between Stars and Quasars in Reionizing Cosmic Hydrogen
The cosmological background of ionizing radiation has been dominated by
quasars once the Universe aged by ~2 billion years. At earlier times (redshifts
z>3), the observed abundance of bright quasars declined sharply, implying that
cosmic hydrogen was reionized by stars instead. Here, we explain the physical
origin of the transition between the dominance of stars and quasars as a
generic feature of structure formation in the concordance LCDM cosmology. At
early times, the fraction of baryons in galaxies grows faster than the maximum
(Eddington-limited) growth rate possible for quasars. As a result, quasars were
not able to catch up with the rapid early growth of stellar mass in their host

Functional diversity of chemokines and chemokine receptors in response to viral infection of the central nervous system.
Encounters with neurotropic viruses result in varied outcomes ranging from encephalitis, paralytic poliomyelitis or other serious consequences to relatively benign infection. One of the principal factors that control the outcome of infection is the localized tissue response and subsequent immune response directed against the invading toxic agent. It is the role of the immune system to contain and control the spread of virus infection in the central nervous system (CNS), and paradoxically, this response may also be pathologic. Chemokines are potent proinflammatory molecules whose expression within virally infected tissues is often associated with protection and/or pathology which correlates with migration and accumulation of immune cells. Indeed, studies with a neurotropic murine coronavirus, mouse hepatitis virus (MHV), have provided important insight into the functional roles of chemokines and chemokine receptors in participating in various aspects of host defense as well as disease development within the CNS. This chapter will highlight recent discoveries that have provided insight into the diverse biologic roles of chemokines and their receptors in coordinating immune responses following viral infection of the CNS
