Acute and chronic effects of multivitamin/mineral supplementation on objective and subjective energy measures
Background: Vitamins and minerals play an essential role within many cellular processes including energy
production and metabolism. Previously, supplementation with a multivitamin/mineral (MVM) for ≥28 days resulted
in improvements to cognition and subjective state. We have also demonstrated shifts in metabolism during
cognitively demanding tasks following MVM in females, both acutely and following 8-week supplementation. The
current study aimed to assess these effects further in males and females using metabolically challenging exercise
and cognitive tasks.
Methods: The current randomised, placebo-controlled, parallel groups study investigated the effects of a MVM
complex in 82 healthy young (18-35y) exercisers. Subjective ratings and substrate metabolism were assessed during
30 min each of increasingly effortful incremental exercise and demanding cognitive tasks. Assessments took place
on acute study days following a single dose (Day 1) of MVM, containing 3 times recommended daily allowance of
water-soluble vitamins plus CoQ10, and following 4-week supplementation (Day 28).
Results: Energy expenditure (EE) was increased during cognitive tasks following MVM across Day 1 and Day 28,
with greater effects in males. In males, MVM also increased carbohydrate oxidation and energy expenditure during
exercise across Day 1 and Day 28. In females, mental tiredness was lower during exercise; increases in physical
tiredness following 30 min of exercise were attenuated; and stress ratings following cognitive tasks were reduced
following MVM. In males, MVM only lowered mental tiredness following 10 min of exercise. These effects were
apparent irrespective of day, but effects on mental tiredness were greater on Day 28. Ferritin levels were also higher
on Day 28 in those receiving MVM.
Conclusion: These findings extend on existing knowledge, demonstrating increased carbohydrate oxidation and
increased energy expenditure in males following MVM supplementation for the first time. Importantly, they show
modulation of energy expenditure and subjective tiredness following a single dose, providing further evidence for
acute effects of MVM. Differential effects in men and women suggest that sex may play an important role in the
effects of MVM on energy metabolism and should be considered in future research.

Dietary nitrate modulates cerebral blood flow parameters and cognitive performance in humans: A double-blind, placebo-controlled, crossover investigation.

The final version is available from the publisher via the DOI in this record.Nitrate derived from vegetables is consumed as part of a normal diet and is reduced endogenously via nitrite to nitric oxide. It has been shown to improve endothelial function, reduce blood pressure and the oxygen cost of sub-maximal exercise, and increase regional perfusion in the brain. The current study assessed the effects of dietary nitrate on cognitive performance and prefrontal cortex cerebral blood-flow (CBF) parameters in healthy adults. In this randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-groups study, 40 healthy adults received either placebo or 450 ml beetroot juice (~5.5 mmol nitrate). Following a 90 minute drink/absorption period, participants performed a selection of cognitive tasks that activate the frontal cortex for 54 min. Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) was used to monitor CBF and hemodynamics, as indexed by concentration changes in oxygenated and deoxygenated-haemoglobin, in the frontal cortex throughout. The bioconversion of nitrate to nitrite was confirmed in plasma by ozone-based chemi-luminescence. Dietary nitrate modulated the hemodynamic response to task performance, with an initial increase in CBF at the start of the task period, followed by consistent reductions during the least demanding of the three tasks utilised. Cognitive performance was improved on the serial 3s subtraction task. These results show that single doses of dietary nitrate can modulate the CBF response to task performance and potentially improve cognitive performance, and suggest one possible mechanism by which vegetable consumption may have beneficial effects on brain function

Acute effects of flavonoid-rich blueberry on cognitive and vascular function in healthy older adults
BACKGROUND
Consumption of flavonoids, natural compounds found in foods such as berries and cocoa, have been shown to be beneficial for cognitive function. However, less is known about potential mechanisms and acute benefits for the older population.
OBJECTIVE
To determine whether acute intake of flavonoid-rich blueberry could have beneficial effects on cognitive function in a sample of healthy older adults and identify possible mechanisms.
METHODS
A cross-over randomised controlled trial (RCT) was conducted (N = 18) with volunteers receiving a flavonoid-rich blueberry beverage (579mg of antho- and pro-cyanidins) on one visit and a sugar-matched control on another. Cognitive function was measured at baseline, 2 and 5 hours post consumption of the intervention and blood pressure (BP), arterial stiffness and plasma brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) concentration at baseline and an hour post-intervention.
RESULTS
Whilst there was no significant effect of the intervention on global cognitive function, performance was significantly different at 2 compared to 5 hours following the control beverage (p 0.05).
CONCLUSIONS
A single dose of flavonoid-rich blueberry could have a potentially protective effect on cognitive function in healthy older adults, possibly due to improved cerebrovascular function and positive interactions with cell signalling pathways involved in cognitive processes
Effects of chronic consumption of specific fruit (berries, citrus and cherries) on CVD risk factors: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials.
Purpose: This review aims to compare the magnitude of the effects of chronic consumption of fruits; specifically berries, citrus and cherries on cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors. Methods: PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and psycARTICLES were searched from inception until January 2020. Forty-five chronic (≥ 1 week) randomised controlled trials assessing CVD risk factors including endothelial (dys)function, blood pressure (BP), blood lipids and inflammatory biomarkers were included. Results: Investigated interventions reported improvements in endothelial function (n = 8), inflammatory biomarkers and lipid status (n = 14), and BP (n = 10). Berries including juice of barberry, cranberry, grape, pomegranate, powder of blueberry, grape, raspberry and freeze-dried strawberry significantly reduced SBP by 3.68 mmHg (95% CI − 6.79 to − 0.58; P = 0.02) and DBP by 1.52 mmHg (95% CI − 2.87 to − 0.18, P = 0.04). In subgroup analysis, these associations were limited to cranberry juice (SBP by 1.52 mmHg [95% CI − 2.97 to − 0.07; P = 0.05], DBP by 1.78 mmHg [95% CI − 3.43 to − 0.12, P = 0.04] and cherry juice (SBP by 3.11 mmHg [95% CI − 4.06 to − 2.15; P = 0.02]). Berries also significantly elevated sVCAM-1 levels by 14.57 ng/mL (85% CI 4.22 to 24.93; P = 0.02). Conclusion: These findings suggest that supplementing cranberry or cherry juice might contribute to an improvement in blood pressure. No other significant improvements were observed for other specified fruits. More research is warranted comparing different classes of fruit and exploring the importance of fruit processing on their cardiovascular-protective effects
Effects of blackcurrant juice on pre-frontal cortical haemodynamics and cognition in healthy young adults

Published by Informa UK Limited, trading as Taylor & Francis Group.Background: Evidence from randomised controlled trials demonstrates the modulatory effects of polyphenol consumption on the vascular system including improvements to cortical blood flow (CBF), microvascular blood flow, and large artery plasticity. Polyphenol-rich blackcurrants have been shown to inhibit monoamine oxidase, modulate brainwave spectral activity and modulate peripheral blood flow. This study assessed whether blackcurrant consumption can modulate blood flow in the shallow pre-frontal cortex, as measured using near infrared spectroscopy, during rest and under cognitive demand. Methods: A randomised double blind, placebo-controlled balanced cross over design was used to assess the efficacy of a cold pressed blackcurrant juice drink (Blackadder cultivar, Neuroberry, Plant and Food Research Ltd.) standardised at 500 mg of total polyphenols upon attention and working memory and prefrontal cortical haemodynamics at rest and during cognitive load in 20 healthy young adults aged 18–35 years, following a 60-minute absorption period. Results: Consumption of the Blackadder juice extract resulted in significant acute modulations of pre-frontal cortex haemodynamics during resting absorption and cognitive task performance as indicated by a decrease in deoxygenated haemoglobin [F(1,19) = 5.70, p = 0.027] and an increase in left hemisphere oxygenated haemoglobin during task performance [F(1.88,33.83) = 7.70, p = 0.002]. No effects on cognition were observed in this sample of healthy young adults. Conclusion: Results from this trial outline the ability of a blackcurrant juice extract to increase cerebral blood flow during cognitive demand in healthy young adults. The effects of the juice extract in addition to other types of blackcurrant extracts upon acute and chronic brain function and blood flow deserve further investigation. Trial registration:
The effects of Covid-19 lockdown on health and psychosocial functioning in older adults aged 70 and over
The COVID-19 pandemic led to a state-imposed lockdown in the UK; there are many psychosocial consequences of pandemics, with older adults potentially at an increased risk. The current study assessed psychosocial functioning in a sample of older adults in the UK with baseline data collected pre-lockdown and follow-up 12 weeks later during lockdown. Thus, allowing investigation of the effect of COVID-19 and associated lockdown on psychosocial well-being. Thirty-five older adults (Mean age = 76.06, sex = 12 males) participated in this repeated measures study. A final follow-up was then conducted post-lockdown to capture any factors that were viewed as helpful to well-being during lockdown. From pre- to during lockdown, perceived stress, well-being, depressive symptoms, mood disturbance and memory were all significantly worsened. There were significant improvements in self-reported physical health symptoms, social interaction, time spent engaging in physical activity and certain aspects of relationship quality. Follow-up showed that well-being, depression and mood were still negatively affected post-lockdown. Given the sample were all ‘healthy’ at baseline in comparison to established norms, there may be greater impairment in more vulnerable populations. Support for older populations is needed to mitigate the negative effects shown, particularly in light of the endurance of some of these effects post-lockdown
The Effectiveness of Nutritional Education Interventions on Dietary Intake in Young Black Males: A Near-Empty Systematic Review
The incidence of several diet and lifestyle-related diseases, previously seen only in adults, is increasing in prevalence in young people. The Black population, and particularly Black males, are at high risk of developing lifestyle-related diseases. Adolescence and young adulthood are considered a transitional period with increasing independence and responsibility, along with the development of lifelong lifestyle habits. This systematic review aimed to establish which methods and approaches to nutritional education interventions are the most effective in improving the nutritional/dietary intake in healthy young Black males. Eligibility criteria were designed using PICOS and included controlled trials of nutrition education interventions designed to improve dietary intake in healthy young Black or mixed-race males aged 14–21 years old. Medline, Cinahl and Scopus were searched in April 2021, resulting in 20,375 records being screened, and subsequently 72 full-text articles were reviewed. Risk of bias was assessed using the ROBINS-I tool. One study met the eligibility criteria. Results are presented in a narrative format as meta-analysis was not possible. This systematic review revealed a lack of evidence on the effectiveness of nutritional education interventions in this high-risk population. Limitations are noted and recommendations have been made

A pilot dose-response study of the acute effects of haskap berry extract (Lonicera caerulea L.) on cognition, mood and blood pressure in older adults
Purpose
Haskap (Lonicera caerulea L. or blue honeysuckle) is a plant native to the low-lying wet areas and mountains of Siberia and northeastern Asia, but is now cultivated in Canada. The dark blue berries are rich in anthocyanins, particularly cyanidin-3-O-glucoside. Previously, anthocyanin-rich fruits have been observed to benefit cognitive performance during the immediate postprandial period following a single acute dose. However, no study has currently examined the potential for haskap berries to influence cognitive performance. Here, we investigate the acute cognitive benefits of an anthocyanin-rich haskap berry extract.
Methods
A double-blind, counterbalanced, crossover intervention study compared the acute effects of three separate haskap berry extract doses, containing 100mg, 200mg, and 400mg anthocyanins, with a sugar-matched placebo. Participants were an opportunity sample of 20 older adults, aged 62-81 years. Measures of cognition, mood, and blood pressure were recorded at baseline and 1.5 hours postprandially.
Results
Compared to placebo, the 400mg dose elicited significantly lower diastolic blood pressure and heart rate. Both 200mg and 400mg doses elicited significantly higher word recall, with the 400mg dose also significantly improving word recognition scores, on an episodic memory task. However, mood, working memory and executive function task results were more equivocal.
Conclusions
The findings provide evidence for improvements in episodic memory and blood pressure following acute supplementation with haskap berry extract, with higher doses appearing most effective. The cognitive findings concur with previous literature that suggests episodic memory effects, and not executive function effects, are most prevalent in older adults following anthocyanin-rich berry supplementation. The blood pressure outcome is consistent with a vasodilatory mechanism of action
Plasma nervonic acid levels were negatively associated with attention levels in community-living older adults in New Zealand
© The Author(s) 2022The global population is aging. Preserving function and independence of our aging population is paramount. A key component to maintaining independence is the preservation of cognitive function. Metabolomics can be used to identify biomarkers of cognition before noticeable deterioration. Our study investigated the plasma metabolome of 332 community-living New Zealanders between 65 and 74 years of age, using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Six cognitive domains were assessed. Of the 123 metabolites identified using an in-house mass spectral libraries of standards, nervonic acid had a significant, inverse association with the attention domain (P-value = 1.52E− 4; FDR = 0.019), after adjusting for covariates (apolipoprotein E -ε4 genotype, sex, body fat percentage (standardised by sex), age, education, deprivation index, physical activity, metabolic syndrome, polypharmacy, smoking status, and alcohol intake) and multiple testing. Attention is defined as the ability to concentrate on selected aspects of the environment while ignoring other stimuli. This is the first study to identify nervonic acid as a potential biomarker of attention in older adults. Future research should confirm this association in a longitudinal study
Correction to: Effects of chronic consumption of specific fruit (berries, citrus and cherries) on CVD risk factors: a systematic review and meta‑analysis of randomised controlled trials
In the original publication, a study supplementing orange juice by Morand, et al., 2011 (France) was incorrectly reported for the diastolic blood pressure (DBP) outcome. We originally reported no improvement in DBP as results were reported as least square means, when actually Morand and investigators found a significant improvement in DBP by orange juice compared to placebo. The study should have been reported in Table 1 as “significant improvement compared to the control”, and therefore there should be 11 interventions in the review reporting improvements on blood pressures. We include here an updated forest plot of the citrus juice group, that includes the correct findings of the Morand study investigating the outcome of DBP (Fig. 6). In our updated meta-analysis there was no significant improvement in DBP by the citrus juice interventions compared to the control. The I2 test suggested significant substantial heterogeneities for citrus juice group investigating the effects on DBP (I2 = 83%, P < 0.01) (Fig. 6). The sensitivity analysis also suggested no effect of grapefruit concentrate juice in the citrus juice group on the result of DBP (Supplemental Table 6).
