Hypothermia following antipsychotic drug use
Objective: Hypothermia is an adverse drug reaction (ADR) of
antipsychotic drug (APD) use. Risk factors for hypothermia in
ADP users are unknown. We studied which risk factors for
hypothermia can be identified based on case reports.
Method: Case reports of hypothermia in APD-users found in
PUBMED or EMBASE were searched for risk factors. The
WHO international database for Adverse Drug Reactions was
searched for reports of hypothermia and APD use.
Results: The literature search resulted in 32 articles containing
43 case reports. In the WHO database, 480 reports were
registered of patients developing hypothermia during the
use of APDs which almost equals the number of reports for
hyperthermia associated with APD use (n=524). Hypothermia
risk seems to be increased in the first days following start
or dose increase of APs. APs with strong 5-HT2 antagonism
seem to be more involved in hypothermia; 55% of hypothermia
reports are for atypical antipsychotics. Schizophrenia was
the most prevalent diagnosis in the case reports.
Conclusion: Especially in admitted patients who are not able
to control their own environment or physical status, frequent
measurements of body temperature (with a thermometer that
can measure low body temperatures) must be performed in
order to detect developing hypothermia

Periodic photic stimuli across the entire electroencephalographic (EEG) frequency range were used in an attempt to assess EEG functional differences between chronic schizophrenic patients and control subjects. The EEG responses to these photic stimuli were significantly attenuated in the schizophrenic patients, specifically at the frequencies within the EEG alpha range. The schizophrenic patients also showed an alpha range attenuation in the "no stimulus" EEG alpha measure, such that there was a significant correlation across subjects between the "stimulus" and "no stimulus" EEG alpha range abnormalities. These abnormalities are discussed with reference to possible dysfunctional thalamic mechanisms involved in the pacing of EEG alpha activity and the gating of information through the cerebral cortex

An extracorporeal blood-cleansing device for sepsis therapy
Here we describe a blood-cleansing device for sepsis therapy inspired by the spleen, which can continuously remove pathogens and toxins from blood without first identifying the infectious agent. Blood flowing from an infected individual is mixed with magnetic nanobeads coated with an engineered human opsonin—mannose-binding lectin (MBL)—that captures a broad range of pathogens and toxins without activating complement factors or coagulation. Magnets pull the opsonin-bound pathogens and toxins from the blood; the cleansed blood is then returned back to the individual. The biospleen efficiently removes multiple Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, fungi and endotoxins from whole human blood flowing through a single biospleen unit at up to 1.25 liters per h in vitro. In rats infected with Staphylococcus aureus or Escherichia coli, the biospleen cleared >90% of bacteria from blood, reduced pathogen and immune cell infiltration in multiple organs and decreased inflammatory cytokine levels. Color–Odor Interactions: A Review and Model
Certain colors are seen as corresponding to, and thus appropriate to, certain odors (e.g., red for cherry odor). When colors accompany odors, our perceptions of the odors are changed. Appropriate colors often affect our perception of the odors differently from inappropriate colors. This paper discusses the literature on color-odor correspondences including possible causes of these correspondences. It then reviews findings on the influence of color on odor identification, odor discrimination, odor intensity, and odor pleasantness. Color\u27s effect on both orthonasal and retronasal olfaction is discussed. A model for how color exerts its effects on odor is proposed
