Large deviations of the empirical volume fraction for stationary Poisson grain models
We study the existence of the (thermodynamic) limit of the scaled
cumulant-generating function L_n(z)=|W_n|^{-1}\logE\exp{z|\Xi\cap W_n|} of the
empirical volume fraction |\Xi\cap W_n|/|W_n|, where |\cdot| denotes the
d-dimensional Lebesgue measure. Here \Xi=\bigcup_{i\ge1}(\Xi_i+X_i) denotes a
d-dimensional Poisson grain model (also known as a Boolean model) defined by a
stationary Poisson process \Pi_{\lambda}=\sum_{i\ge1}\delta_{X_i} with
intensity \lambda >0 and a sequence of independent copies \Xi_1,\Xi_2,... of a
random compact set \Xi_0. For an increasing family of compact convex sets {W_n,
n\ge1} which expand unboundedly in all directions, we prove the existence and
analyticity of the limit lim_{n\to\infty}L_n(z) on some disk in the complex
plane whenever E\exp{a|\Xi_0|}0. Moreover, closely connected
with this result, we obtain exponential inequalities and the exact asymptotics
for the large deviation probabilities of the empirical volume fraction in the
sense of Cram\'er and Chernoff.Comment: Published at http://dx.doi.org/10.1214/105051604000001007 in the

'It is Germany where he truly lives': Nazi claims on Shakespearean drama
The fact that the Nazis tried to claim Shakespeare as a Germanic playwright has been well documented but recently theatre historians have claimed that their “success” was rather limited. Instead commentators have asserted that plays such as Othello, Antony and Cleopatra and The Merchant of Venice offended National Socialist precepts and were sidelined. This article attempts a re-evaluation and shows that the effect of the Nazi claims on Shakespeare was substantial, the amount of critical writing supporting these demands was significant, and the official efforts which went into putting these demands into practice were considerable. Crucially, it is also argued that the Nazis established a particular reading of Shakespeare which lasted well into the 1960s and dominated the aesthetic of West German productions of his drama
Exploring adult hippocampal neurogenesis using optogenetics
In the 1980s, it was widely accepted that new neurons are continuously generated in the dentate gyrus of the mammalian hippocampus. Since its acceptance, researchers have employed various techniques and behavioral paradigms to study the proliferation, differentiation, and functional role of adult-born neurons. This literature thesis aims to discuss how optogenetics is able to overcome the limitations of past techniques and provide the field with new insights into the functional role of neurogenesis. We will review the current knowledge on both adult hippocampal neurogenesis and optogenetics, present representative studies using optogenetics to investigate neurogenesis and discuss potential limitations and concerns involved in using optogenetics
Monitoring of Traffic Manoeuvres with Imprecise Information
In monitoring, we algorithmically check if a single behavior satisfies a
property. Here, we consider monitoring for Multi-Lane Spatial Logic (MLSL). The
behavior is given as a finite transition sequence of MLSL and the property is
that a spatial MLSL formula should hold at every point in time within the
sequence. In our procedure we transform the transition sequence and the formula
to the first-order theory of real-closed fields, which is decidable, such that
the resulting formula is valid iff the MLSL formula holds throughout the
transition sequence. We then assume that temporal data may have an error of up
to , and that spatial data may have an error of up to . We
extend our procedure to check if the MLSL formula
--robustly holds throughout the transition sequence.Comment: In Proceedings FVAV 2017, arXiv:1709.0212
