    Extremes for the inradius in the Poisson line tessellation

    A Poisson line tessellation is observed within a window. With each cell of the tessellation, we associate the inradius, which is the radius of the largest ball contained in the cell. Using Poisson approximation, we compute the limit distributions of the largest and smallest order statistics for the inradii of all cells whose nuclei are contained in the window in the limit as the window is scaled to infinity. We additionally prove that the limit shape of the cells minimising the inradius is a triangle

    An outlook on protein S-acylation in plants:what are the next steps?

    S-acylation, also known as palmitoylation, is the reversible post-translational addition of fatty acids to proteins. Historically thought primarily to be a means for anchoring otherwise soluble proteins to membranes, evidence now suggests that reversible S-acylation may be an important dynamic regulatory mechanism. Importantly S-acylation also affects the function of many integral membrane proteins making S-acylation an important factor to consider in understanding processes such as cell wall synthesis, membrane trafficking, signalling acrossmembranes and regulating ion, hormone and metabolite transport through membranes. This review summarises the latest thoughts, ideas and findings in the field and charts the direction of future work to enable progress to be made in understanding the role of this enigmatic regulatory protein modification

    The viral diffusion of campaign messages about political issues during the 2016 U.S. presidential election

    With candidates using social media sites like Facebook and Twitter as part of their campaign strategies, social scientists are trying to understand the diffusion of political messages. Viral events can spread messages fast and far from the source, bringing candidate’s messages to new audiences and bringing new followers to candidates. To date, no studies have focused on understanding specifically what kinds of political issues the public spreads into their own networks. While the kinds of issues that spread will likely change from election to election, this work provides a comparison point for future work and is the first step in more real-time analysis that could be useful for researchers, journalists, and politicians. For this poster abstract we highlight part of our analysis, specifically, the frequency with which presidential candidates tweeted about specific issues and how the public responded by retweeting. To accomplish this, we use data visualization for exploratory data analysis. We find that that candidates and the public are most interested in different topics, but that both the public and candidates are more interested in advocacy messages than attack messages for every topic. For the final poster we will present analysis of both Facebook and Twitter, as well as confirmatory statistical analysis using regression modeling

    Brand ambidexterity and commitment in higher education: an exploratory study

    The study investigates a university’s brand ambidexterity-strategy and its effects on brand image, reputation, and commitment in higher education. A research model integrates the determinants of university-specific brand performance, and proposes that commitment towards a particular university is influenced by: (a) brand ambidexterity, that is, exploratory and exploitative orientations; and (b) student level responses, these being the students’ perceptions with brand image and reputation leading to increased commitment with the university. Findings suggest that when students choose to commit for the study of a postgraduate degree, a variety of factors influence their decision, of which the brand performance and brand image constructs play major roles; interestingly, brand reputation is less important. The framework helps university managers in designing appropriate strategies to influence students’ commitment towards the university to, for example, continue their post-graduate studies. Implications exist for broader brand management and customer management approaches that include up and cross-selling schemes

    Review of the literature on the use of social media by people with traumatic brain injury (TBI)

    Purpose: To review the literature relating to use of social media by people with a traumatic brain injury (TBI), specifically its use for social engagement, information exchange or rehabilitation. Method: A systematic review with a qualitative meta-synthesis of content themes was conducted. In June 2014, 10 databases were searched for relevant, peer-reviewed research studies in English that related to both TBI and social media. Results: Sixteen studies met the inclusion criteria, with Facebook™ and Twitter™ being the most common social media represented in the included studies. Content analysis identified three major categories of meaning in relation to social media and TBI: (1) risks and benefits; (2) barriers and facilitators; and (3) purposes of use of social media. A greater emphasis was evident regarding potential risks and apparent barriers to social media use, with little focus on facilitators of successful use by people with TBI. Conclusions: Research to date reveals a range of benefits to the use of social media by people with TBI however there is little empirical research investigating its use. Further research focusing on ways to remove the barriers and increase facilitators for the use of social media by people with TBI is needed. Implications for Rehabilitation: Communication disabilities following traumatic brain injury (TBI) can be wide-ranging in scope and social isolation with loss of friendships after TBI is common. For many people, social media is rapidly becoming a usual part of everyday communication and its use has the potential to increase communication and social participation for people with TBI.There is emerging evidence and commentary regarding the perceived benefits and risks, barriers and facilitators and purposes of use of social media within the TBI population.Risks associated with using social media, and low accessibility of social media sites, form barriers to its use. Facilitators for social media use in people with TBI include training the person with TBI and their communication partners in ways to enjoy and use social media safely.There is minimal rigorous evaluation of social media use by people with TBI and scant information regarding social media use by people with communication disabilities after TBI. Further investigation is needed into the potential benefits of social media use on communication, social participation and social support with the aim of reducing social isolation in people with TBI

    Photon pair generation in hydrogenated amorphous silicon microring resonators

    We generate photon pairs in a-Si:H microrings using a CW pump, and find the Kerr coefficient of a-Si:H to be 3.73±0.25×1017m2/W3.73 \pm 0.25 \times 10^{-17}m^2/W. By measuring the Q factor with coupled power we find that the loss in the a-Si:H micro-rings scales linearly with power, and therefore cannot originate from two photon absorption. Theoretically comparing a-Si:H and c-Si micro-ring pair sources, we show that the high Kerr coefficient of this sample of a-Si:H is best utilized for microrings with Q factors below 10310^3, but that for higher Q factor devices the photon pair rate is greatly suppressed due to the first order loss.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figure
