The slow X-ray pulsar SXP 1062 and associated supernova remnant in the Wing of the Small Magellanic Cloud
SXP 1062 is an exceptional case of a young neutron star in a wind-fed
high-mass X-ray binary associated with a supernova remnant. A unique
combination of measured spin period, its derivative, luminosity and young age
makes this source a key probe for the physics of accretion and neutron star
evolution. Theoretical models proposed to explain the properties of SXP 1062

An experimental testbed for NEAT to demonstrate micro-pixel accuracy
NEAT is an astrometric mission proposed to ESA with the objectives of
detecting Earth-like exoplanets in the habitable zone of nearby solar-type
stars. In NEAT, one fundamental aspect is the capability to measure stellar
centroids at the precision of 5e-6 pixel. Current state-of-the-art methods for
centroid estimation have reached a precision of about 4e-5 pixel at Nyquist
sampling. Simulations showed that a precision of 2 micro-pixels can be reached,
if intra and inter pixel quantum efficiency variations are calibrated and
corrected for by a metrology system. The European part of the NEAT consortium
is designing and building a testbed in vacuum in order to achieve 5e-6 pixel
precision for the centroid estimation. The goal is to provide a proof of
concept for the precision requirement of the NEAT spacecraft. In this paper we
give the basic relations and trade-offs that come into play for the design of a
centroid testbed and its metrology system. We detail the different conditions
necessary to reach the targeted precision, present the characteristics of our

A detector interferometric calibration experiment for high precision astrometry
Context: Exoplanet science has made staggering progress in the last two
decades, due to the relentless exploration of new detection methods and
refinement of existing ones. Yet astrometry offers a unique and untapped
potential of discovery of habitable-zone low-mass planets around all the
solar-like stars of the solar neighborhood. To fulfill this goal, astrometry
must be paired with high precision calibration of the detector.
Aims: We present a way to calibrate a detector for high accuracy astrometry.
An experimental testbed combining an astrometric simulator and an
interferometric calibration system is used to validate both the hardware needed
for the calibration and the signal processing methods. The objective is an
accuracy of 5e-6 pixel on the location of a Nyquist sampled polychromatic point
spread function.
Methods: The interferometric calibration system produced modulated Young
fringes on the detector. The Young fringes were parametrized as products of
time and space dependent functions, based on various pixel parameters. The
minimization of func- tion parameters was done iteratively, until convergence
was obtained, revealing the pixel information needed for the calibration of
astrometric measurements.
Results: The calibration system yielded the pixel positions to an accuracy
estimated at 4e-4 pixel. After including the pixel position information, an
astrometric accuracy of 6e-5 pixel was obtained, for a PSF motion over more
than five pixels. In the static mode (small jitter motion of less than 1e-3
pixel), a photon noise limited precision of 3e-5 pixel was reached
First experimental results of very high accuracy centroiding measurements for the neat astrometric mission

centroid estimation. The goal is to provide a proof of concept for the
precision requirement of the NEAT spacecraft. In this paper we present the
metrology and the pseudo stellar sources sub-systems, we present a performance
model and an error budget of the experiment and we report the present status of
the demonstration. Finally we also present our first results: the experiment
had its first light in July 2013 and a first set of data was taken in air. The
analysis of this first set of data showed that we can already measure the pixel

Stellar Content from high resolution galactic spectra via Maximum A Posteriori
This paper describes STECMAP (STEllar Content via Maximum A Posteriori), a
flexible, non-parametric inversion method for the interpretation of the
integrated light spectra of galaxies, based on synthetic spectra of single
stellar populations (SSPs). We focus on the recovery of a galaxy's star
formation history and stellar age-metallicity relation. We use the high
resolution SSPs produced by PEGASE-HR to quantify the informational content of
the wavelength range 4000 - 6800 Angstroms.
A detailed investigation of the properties of the corresponding simplified
linear problem is performed using singular value decomposition. It turns out to
be a powerful tool for explaining and predicting the behaviour of the
inversion. We provide means of quantifying the fundamental limitations of the
problem considering the intrinsic properties of the SSPs in the spectral range
of interest, as well as the noise in these models and in the data.
We performed a systematic simulation campaign and found that, when the time
elapsed between two bursts of star formation is larger than 0.8 dex, the
properties of each episode can be constrained with a precision of 0.04 dex in
age and 0.02 dex in metallicity from high quality data (R=10 000,
signal-to-noise ratio SNR=100 per pixel), not taking model errors into account.
The described methods and error estimates will be useful in the design and in
the analysis of extragalactic spectroscopic surveys.Comment: 31 pages, 23 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA
NectarCAM : a camera for the medium size telescopes of the Cherenkov Telescope Array
NectarCAM is a camera proposed for the medium-sized telescopes of the
Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) covering the central energy range of ~100 GeV
to ~30 TeV. It has a modular design and is based on the NECTAr chip, at the
heart of which is a GHz sampling Switched Capacitor Array and a 12-bit Analog
to Digital converter. The camera will be equipped with 265 7-photomultiplier
modules, covering a field of view of 8 degrees. Each module includes the
photomultiplier bases, high voltage supply, pre-amplifier, trigger, readout and
Ethernet transceiver. The recorded events last between a few nanoseconds and
tens of nanoseconds. The camera trigger will be flexible so as to minimize the
read-out dead-time of the NECTAr chips. NectarCAM is designed to sustain a data
rate of more than 4 kHz with less than 5\% dead time. The camera concept, the
design and tests of the various subcomponents and results of thermal and
electrical prototypes are presented. The design includes the mechanical
structure, cooling of the electronics, read-out, clock distribution, slow

The contributory role of autism symptomology in child pornography offending : why there is an urgent need for empirical research in this area
Purpose
As recently highlighted by Creaby-Attwood and Allely (2017) it is crucial that the possible innate
vulnerabilities that contributed to sexual offending behaviour in an individual with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are taken into consideration for the application of a diversion program to avoid the stigma of a criminal conviction or during sentencing for a non-custodial outcome. Specifically, in those defendants with a diagnosis of what used to be referred to as Asperger's Syndrome (AS) and now is recognised as an ASD and who are charged and convicted of a non-contact sexual offence, education and mental health intervention will best serve the interests of justice.
Design/methodology/approach
This paper focuses on one particular type of sexual offending behaviour, namely, possession of child
pornography. A systematic PRISMA review was conducted.
Findings
The authors linked examples of child pornography in the research literature to the ASD symptomology and describe how the symptomology explains such behaviour as not reflecting actual sexual deviance.
Originality/value
Downloading and viewing of child pornography by individuals with ASD has received relatively little research outside the mental health field. This review is of particular importance to those in the criminal justice system who may not have much knowledge and understanding of ASD. It is suggested that diversion programmes and mental health courts should be set up for this particular population charged with this particular crime in mind so that the necessary treatment/intervention/support and care can be given to this particular group.

Epithelial damage and tissue γδ T cells promote a unique tumor-protective IgE response
IgE is an ancient and conserved immunoglobulin isotype with potent immunological function. Nevertheless, the regulation of IgE responses remains an enigma, and evidence of a role for IgE in host defense is limited. Here we report that topical exposure to a common environmental DNA-damaging xenobiotic initiated stress surveillance by γδTCR+ intraepithelial lymphocytes that resulted in class switching to IgE in B cells and the accumulation of autoreactive IgE. High-throughput antibody sequencing revealed that γδ T cells shaped the IgE repertoire by supporting specific variable-diversity-joining (VDJ) rearrangements with unique characteristics of the complementarity-determining region CDRH3. This endogenous IgE response, via the IgE receptor FcεRI, provided protection against epithelial carcinogenesis, and expression of the gene encoding FcεRI in human squamous-cell carcinoma correlated with good disease prognosis. These data indicate a joint role for immunosurveillance by T cells and by B cells in epithelial tissues and suggest that IgE is part of the host defense against epithelial damage and tumor development
Ecological commonalities among pelagic fishes: comparison of freshwater ciscoes and marine herring and sprat
Systematic comparisons of the ecology between functionally similar fish species from freshwater and marine aquatic systems are surprisingly rare. Here, we discuss commonalities and differences in evolutionary history, population genetics, reproduction and life history, ecological interactions, behavioural ecology and physiological ecology of temperate and Arctic freshwater coregonids (vendace and ciscoes, Coregonus spp.) and marine clupeids (herring, Clupea harengus, and sprat, Sprattus sprattus). We further elucidate potential effects of climate warming on these groups of fish based on the ecological features of coregonids and clupeids documented in the previous parts of the review. These freshwater and marine fishes share a surprisingly high number of similarities. Both groups are relatively short-lived, pelagic planktivorous fishes. The genetic differentiation of local populations is weak and seems to be in part correlated to an astonishing variability of spawning times. The discrete thermal window of each species influences habitat use, diel vertical migrations and supposedly also life history variations. Complex life cycles and preference for cool or cold water make all species vulnerable to the effects of global warming. It is suggested that future research on the functional interdependence between spawning time, life history characteristics, thermal windows and genetic differentiation may profit from a systematic comparison of the patterns found in either coregonids or clupeids
