CONTEXT: There are few longitudinal studies that analyze the growth and nutritional status parameters of children born prematurely. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the growth and dietary intake of preterm newborns in the first year of gestation-corrected age. DESIGN: Prospective clinical study. SETTING: Tertiary care hospital. PATIENTS: 19 children (7 male) who were born prematurely, with birth weight between 1000g and 2000g, which was adequate for the gestational age. PROCEDURES: At 3, 6, 9 and 12 months of gestation-corrected age, children were evaluated in relation to weight, height and cephalic perimeter, using the National Center for Health Statistics as the standard reference, and the Rozalez-Lopez and Frisancho standards for brachial perimeter and triceps and subscapular skinfolds. The calculated dietary intake was compared to the Recommended Dietary Allowances. MAIN MEASUREMENTS: The Z score was calculated for the weight/age, height/age and weight/height relationships, and the percentiles of the perimeters and skinfolds were considered. Dietary intake records were made using the 24-hour Dietary Recall and the Food Frequency Intake Questionnaire methods. The Virtual Nutri software was used to calculate energy and protein intake. RESULTS: The weight/age, height/age and weight/height relationships and the brachial perimeter and triceps skinfold were statistically greater in the first semester in relation to the second. The cephalic perimeter remained above the 50th percentile for the ages studied and there was no difference in the subscapular skinfold between the first and second semesters, remaining below the 50th percentile. The calorie and protein intake, although statistically lower in the first than in the second semester, always remained above the recommended. CONCLUSIONS: The pace of growth is greater in the first semester than in the second, not reaching the standard expected for full-term newborns, with the exception of the cephalic perimeter, which remains adequate. Calorie/protein intake shows an inverse relationship with growth speed, remaining above the recommended for full-term newborns, although with difficulty in depositing subcutaneous fat, in spite of the high caloric intake.CONTEXTO: Atualmente há estudos longitudinais limitados que definem parâmetros de crescimento e estado nutricional de crianças nascidas prematuras.

Business process management and supply chain collaboration: a critical comparison

The link between a firm and supply chain (SC) members has been recognised as one of the key issues for ensuring business success and achieving competitive advantage. Indeed, working across organisational boundaries is required to accomplish effective responses to customers’ needs. Our preliminary research confirmed that there are positive relationships between business process management (BPM), supply chain collaboration (SCC), collaborative advantage and organisational performance. This study is a step further and uses a multiple case design to illuminate the results and gain a greater understanding from extensive discussions about these relationships. By means of semi-structured interviews, the three main issues were identified as: (1) the link between BPM and organisational performance; (2) the link between BPM and SCC; and (3) the contextual factors and benefits achieved from working collaboratively with SC partners. The different scenarios of the link between BPM and SCC were developed in a taxonomy, and the case studies were used to illustrate the experience of intra- and inter-organisational practices in the developing economy of Thailand. The case studies’ results explain in depth that both BPM and SCC are important for improving organisational performance and competitiveness. BPM not only improves organisational performance directly, but also assists with collaborative activities that in turn help to improve internal capabilities. Additionally, the comparisons in issues relating to firm size, industry type, relationship closeness and relationship length were also included in this study

Recognition and Stigma of Prescription Drug Abuse Disorder: Personal and Community Determinants

Background Prescription drug abuse (PDA) disorders continue to contribute to the current American opioid crisis. Within this context, our study seeks to improve understanding about stigma associated with, and symptom recognition of, prescription drug abuse. Aims Model the stigma and symptom recognition of PDA in the general population. Methods A randomized, nation-wide, online, vignette-focused survey of the general public (N = 631) was implemented with an oversample for rural counties. Logit estimation was used for analysis, with regional and county-level sociodemographic variables as controls. Results Individual respondents that self-identify as having or having had “a prescription drug abuse issue” were less likely to correctly identify the condition and were 4 times more likely to exhibit stigma. Male respondents were approximately half as likely to correctly identify PDA as female respondents while older respondents (55+) were more likely to correctly identify PDA, relative to those aged 35–54. Being both male and younger was associated with slightly more stigma, in that they were less likely to disagree with the stigma statement. Conclusions In light of the continued risks that individuals with PDA behaviors face in potentially transitioning to illicit opioid use, the findings of this survey suggested a continued need for public education and outreach. Of particular note is the perspective of those who have self-identified with the condition, as this population faces the largest risks of adverse health outcomes from illicit drug use within the survey respondents

The neuronal calcium sensor (NCS) proteins regulate signal transduction processes and are highly conserved from yeast to humans. We report complete NMR chemical shift assignments of the NCS homolog from fission yeast (Schizosaccharomyces pombe), referred to in this study as Ncs1p. (BMRB no. 16446)

Characterization of primary neurospheres generated from mouse ventral rostral hindbrain

Serotonergic (5-HT) neurons of the reticular formation play a key role in the modulation of behavior, and their dysfunction is associated with severe neurological and psychiatric disorders, such as depression and schizophrenia. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying the differentiation of the progenitor cells and the specification of the 5-HT phenotype are not fully understood. A primary neurosphere cell-culture system from mouse ventral rostral hindbrain at embryonic day 12 was therefore established. The generated primary neurospheres comprised progenitor cells and fully differentiated neurons. Bromodeoxyuridine incorporation experiments in combination with immunocytochemistry for neural markers revealed the proliferation capacity of the neural multipotent hindbrain progenitors within neurospheres and their ability to differentiate toward the neuronal lineage and serotonergic phenotype. Gene expression analysis by reverse transcription with the polymerase chain reaction showed that the neurospheres were regionally specified, as reflected by the expression of the transcription factors Gata2 and Pet1. Treatment of dissociated primary neurospheres with exogenous Shh significantly increased the number of 5-HT-immunopositive cells compared with controls, whereas neutralization of endogenous Shh significantly decreased the number of 5-HT neurons. Thus, the primary neurosphere culture system presented here allows the expansion of hindbrain progenitor cells and the experimental control of their differentiation toward the serotonergic phenotype. This culture system is therefore a useful model for in vitro studies dealing with the development of 5-HT neurons

Impact of early applied upper limb stimulation: The EXPLICIT-stroke programme design

    Get PDF
Main claims of the literature are that functional recovery of the paretic upper limb is mainly defined within the first month post stroke and that rehabilitation services should preferably be applied intensively and in a task-oriented way within this particular time window. EXplaining PLastICITy after stroke (acronym EXPLICIT-stroke) aims to explore the underlying mechanisms of post stroke upper limb recovery. Two randomized single blinded trials form the core of the programme, investigating the effects of early modified Constraint-Induced Movement Therapy (modified CIMT) and EMG-triggered Neuro-Muscular Stimulation (EMG-NMS) in patients with respectively a favourable or poor probability for recovery of dexterity.BioMechanical EngineeringMechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineerin

A possible involvement of aberrant expression of the FHIT gene in the carcinogenesis of squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix

To investigate involvement of an aberrant expression of the FHIT (fragile histidine triad) gene in the process of carcinogenesis and progression in cervical carcinoma, we examined its expression by the reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and cDNA sequence method in 32 cervical invasive carcinomas (25 squamous cell carcinomas and seven adeno- or adenosquamous carcinomas) and 18 of its precursor lesions [four low-grade and 14 high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasias (CINs)]. We also examined a link between the occurrence of the aberrant expression and human papillomavirus (HPV). We detected the aberrant FHIT transcripts in 11 of 25 (44%) cervical invasive squamous cell carcinomas and in 5 of 14 (36%) high-grade CINs (CIN 2 or 3), whereas they were not found in seven non-squamous type and four low-grade CINs (CIN 1). The alteration patterns of the FHIT gene expression in high-grade CINs were virtually similar to those found in invasive carcinomas, such that the exons 5–7 were consistently deleted associated or unassociated with loss of the exon 4 and/or 8. The incidence of the aberrant expression was not related to the presence of HPV and its type. These data indicate that the aberrant expression of the FHIT gene is observed in precursor lesions of cervical carcinoma as well as invasive carcinomas, with its incidence not increasing with advance of clinical stage. Given the squamous cell type dominant expression, the aberrant expression may play a critical role in the generation of squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix, but not the consequence of the progression of the cancer. © 1999 Cancer Research Campaig
