ENGLISH: Results of a study of the length-weight relationships of yellowfin (Neothunnus macropterus) and skipjack (Katsuwonus pelamis) tuna from several fishing areas of the Eastern Tropical Pacific Ocean have been published by Chatwin (1959). In that report, a very low exponential value of 2.6261 was obtained for skipjack from Area 14 (off northern Chile, see Chatwin, Figure 1). It was pointed out, however, that this estimate was based on two samples of fish with a very narrow range of total lengths, not representative of the range in the catch, and that it would be desirable to obtain a further estimate based on a larger range of total lengths. In addition, there proved to be significantly large differences among exponents for the areas sampled, precluding use of a single regression equation for all areas. Two important fishing areas remained unsampled (Areas 10 and 13, see Chatwin, Figure 1), and it appeared desirable to collect length-weight measurement data from them, so that estimating equations would be available for all areas. Subsequent to publication of Chatwin's study, samples of skipjack length-weight measurements were obtained from the desired areas. Estimates derived from these data, and their effects on the previous analysis are presented herein.

ENGLISH: One of the important problems in the current investigations of the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission is the determination of the racial affinities of the stocks of yellowfin and skipjack inhabiting the Eastern Tropical Pacific fishing region. The nature of the problem is twofold. Primary concern is elucidation of the inter-regional relationship of stocks between the Eastern Tropical Pacific fishing region and those further to the westward. Hardly less important, however, is the intraregional relationship of stocks within the regions, particularly the Eastern Pacific region. This latter relationship must be at least partially understood in order properly to approach investigation of the former. (PDF contains 63 pages.

ENGLISH: One primary duty of the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission is to estimate the maximum sustainable catches of yellowfin tuna (Neothunnus macropterus) and skipjack (Katsuwonus pelamis), and to investigate and recommend proposals to maintain the stocks at levels which will permit these catches to be obtained. To do this, there is required some means of predicting yields relative to fishing intensity. . . The age composition of catch, and growth rate of yellowfin tuna for recent years have now been estimated (Hennemuth, 1961). In this paper, relative abundance at age of yellowfin tuna shall be estimated -and used, in turn, to estimate total mortality rate. Yield-per-recruit calculations, based on Beverton and Holt's (1957) simple equation, will be presented to compare present utilization with theoretical maxima under varying levels of fishing mortality and different ages at first capture.

Tissue Sodium Content and Arterial Hypertension in Obese Adolescents

Early-onset obesity is known to culminate in type 2 diabetes, arterial hypertension and subsequent cardiovascular disease. The role of sodium (Na+) homeostasis in this process is incompletely understood, yet correlations between Na+ accumulation and hypertension have been observed in adults. We aimed to investigate these associations in adolescents. A cohort of 32 adolescents (13-17 years), comprising 20 obese patients, of whom 11 were hypertensive, as well as 12 age-matched controls, underwent 23Na-MRI of the left lower leg with a standard clinical 3T scanner. Median triceps surae muscle Na+ content in hypertensive obese (11.95 mmol/L [interquartile range 11.62-13.66]) was significantly lower than in normotensive obese (13.63 mmol/L [12.97-17.64]; p = 0.043) or controls (15.37 mmol/L [14.12-16.08]; p = 0.012). No significant differences were found between normotensive obese and controls. Skin Na+ content in hypertensive obese (13.33 mmol/L [11.53-14.22] did not differ to normotensive obese (14.12 mmol/L [13.15-15.83]) or controls (11.48 mmol/L [10.48-12.80]), whereas normotensive obese had higher values compared to controls (p = 0.004). Arterial hypertension in obese adolescents is associated with low muscle Na+ content. These findings suggest an early dysregulation of Na+ homeostasis in cardiometabolic disease. Further research is needed to determine whether this association is causal and how it evolves in the transition to adulthood

Objective: To develop a tool for the image fusion of computed tomography coronary angiography (CTCA) and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR). Methods: Surface representations and volume-rendered images from fused CTCA/CMR data of five patients with significant coronary artery disease (CAD) on CTCA and perfusion deficits on CMR were generated using a newly developed software prototype. The spatial relationship of significant coronary artery stenosis at CTCA and myocardial defects at CMR was evaluated. Results: Registration of CTCA and CMR images was possible in all patients. The comprehensive three-dimensional visualisation of fused CTCA and CMR data accurately demonstrated the relationship between coronary artery stenoses and myocardial defects in all patients. Conclusion: The introduced tool enables image fusion of CTCA and CMR data sets and allows for correct superposition of the coronary arteries derived from CTCA onto the corresponding myocardial segments derived from CMR. The method facilitates the comprehensive assessment of the functionally relevant CAD by the exact allocation of culprit coronary stenoses to corresponding myocardial defects at a low radiation dos

ENGLISH: The staff of the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission is collecting and analyzing catch statistics of the Eastern Pacific fishery for yellowfin tuna (Neothunnus macropterus) and skipjack (Katsuwonus pelamis) in order to provide the factual information required for maintaining the catch of these species at maximum sustainable levels (Shimada and Schaefer, 1956). Careful, systematic and continued studies of the population structure, life history, and ecology of these species are needed for a proper and adequate interpretation of the catch statistics so that a sound conservation program may be achieved (Schaefer, 1956). DNA deformability changes of single base pair mutants within CDE binding sites in S. Cerevisiae centromere DNA correlate with measured chromosomal loss rates and CDE binding site symmetries

BACKGROUND: The centromeres in yeast (S. cerevisiae) are organized by short DNA sequences (125 bp) on each chromosome consisting of 2 conserved elements: CDEI and CDEIII spaced by a CDEII region. CDEI and CDEIII are critical sequence specific protein binding sites necessary for correct centromere formation and following assembly with proteins, are positioned near each other on a specialized nucleosome. Hegemann et al. BioEssays 1993, 15: 451–460 reported single base DNA mutants within the critical CDEI and CDEIII binding sites on the centromere of chromosome 6 and quantitated centromere loss of function, which they measured as loss rates for the different chromosome 6 mutants during cell division. Olson et al. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 1998, 95: 11163–11168 reported the use of protein-DNA crystallography data to produce a DNA dinucleotide protein deformability energetic scale (PD-scale) that describes local DNA deformability by sequence specific binding proteins. We have used the PD-scale to investigate the DNA sequence dependence of the yeast chromosome 6 mutants' loss rate data. Each single base mutant changes 2 PD-scale values at that changed base position relative to the wild type. In this study, we have utilized these mutants to demonstrate a correlation between the change in DNA deformability of the CDEI and CDEIII core sites and the overall experimentally measured chromosome loss rates of the chromosome 6 mutants. RESULTS: In the CDE I and CDEIII core binding regions an increase in the magnitude of change in deformability of chromosome 6 single base mutants with respect to the wild type correlates to an increase in the measured chromosome loss rate. These correlations were found to be significant relative to 10(5 )Monte Carlo randomizations of the dinucleotide PD-scale applied to the same calculation. A net loss of deformability also tends to increase the loss rate. Binding site position specific, 4 data-point correlations were also created using the wild type sequence and the 3 associated alternate base mutants at each binding site position. These position specific slope magnitudes, or sensitivities, correlated with and reflected the underlying position symmetry of the DNA binding sequences. CONCLUSION: These results suggest the utility of correlating quantitative aspects of sequence specific protein-DNA complex single base mutants with changes in the easily calculated PD-deformability scale of the individual DNA sequence mutants. Using this PD approach, it may be possible in the future to understand the magnitude of biological or energetic functional effects of specific DNA sequence mutants within DNA-protein complexes in terms of their effect on DNA deformability

Virtual reality in cardiac interventions—New tools or new toys?

    Get PDF
Improvements in medical imaging and a steady increase in computing power are leading to new possibilities in the field of cardiovascular interventions. Interventions can be planned in advance in greater detail, even to the point of simulating procedures. Nevertheless, all techniques are at an early stage of development. It is of utmost importance that tools, especially if they can be used as decision support are intensively validated and their accuracy is demonstrated. In our commentary, we summarize current techniques for impprovements in planning and guiding of procedures, but also critically discuss the downsides of these techniques. Following the work of Kenichi and colleagues, we also discuss necessary steps in advancing new tools and techniques, particularly as they are used in routine clinical practice. We also discuss the role of artificial intelligence, which could play a crucial role in this context in the future
