Impact of the introduction of decoupled payments on functioning of the German land market: Country report of the EU tender Study on the functioning of land markets in those EU member states influenced by measures applied under the Common Agricultura

Against the background of the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) in 2003 the following analysis, brings into focus the responses of the agricultural sector to decoupled subsidies. In particular it addresses the impact of the Single Payment Scheme (SPS) on land sales and rent prices and therefore on farm structure. It also aims to assess the extent to which the reform advances sound and sustainable agriculture and provides incentives for marketorientated farming practices. The study is based on the analysis of statistical data and expert surveys conducted in three selected regions. Land markets, midterm review,CAP,structural change,Bodenmärkte,Halbzeitbewertung,GAP,Strukturwandel

Misperceptions of the emotional content of natural and vocoded speech in a car

This paper analyzes a) how often listeners interpret the emotional content of an utterance incorrectly when listening to vocoded or natural speech in adverse conditions; b) which noise conditions cause the most misperceptions; and c) which group of listeners misinterpret emotions the most. The long-term goal is to construct new emotional speech synthesizers that adapt to the environment and to the listener. We performed a large-scale listening test where over 400 listeners between the ages of 21 and 72 assessed natural and vocoded acted emotional speech stimuli. The stimuli had been artificially degraded using a room impulse response recorded in a car and various in-car noise types recorded in a real car. Experimental results show that the recognition rates for emotions and perceived emotional strength degrade as signal-to-noise ratio decreases. Interestingly, misperceptions seem to be more pronounced for negative and lowarousal emotions such as calmness or anger, while positive emotions such as happiness appear to be more robust to noise. An ANOVA analysis of listener meta-data further revealed that gender and age also influenced results, with elderly male listeners most likely to incorrectly identify emotions

Development of classical Hodgkin’s lymphoma in an adult with biallelic STXBP2 mutations

Experimental model systems have delineated an important role for cytotoxic lymphocytes in the immunosurveillance of cancer. In humans, perforin-deficiency has been associated with occurrence of hematologic malignancies. Here, we describe an Epstein-Barr virus-positive classical Hodgkin's lymphoma in a patient harboring biallelic mutations in STXBP2, a gene required for exocytosis of perforin-containing lytic granules and associated with familial hemophagocytic lymphohistocytosis. Cytotoxic T lymphocytes were found infiltrating the tumor, and a high frequency of Epstein-Barr virus-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes were detected in peripheral blood. However, lytic granule exocytosis and cytotoxicity by cytotoxic T lymphocytes, as well as natural killer cells, were severely impaired in the patient. Thus, the data suggest a link between defective lymphocyte exocytosis and development of lymphoma in STXBP2-deficient patients. Therefore, with regards to treatment of familial hemophagocytic lymphohistocytosis patients with mutations in genes required for lymphocyte exocytosis, it is important to consider both the risks of hemophagocytic lymphohistocytosis and malignancy.Swedish Research CouncilSwedish Cancer FoundationSwedish Children’s Cancer FoundationHistiocytosis AssociationClas Groschinsky’s Memorial FundJeanssons FoundationÅke Olsson Foundation for Hematological ResearchÅke Wiberg FoundationKarolinska Institute Research FoundationStockholm County Council (ALF project)Publishe

New Therapeutic Targets for Mood Disorders

    Get PDF
Existing pharmacological treatments for bipolar disorder (BPD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) are often insufficient for many patients. Here we describe a number of targets/compounds that clinical and preclinical studies suggest could result in putative novel treatments for mood disorders. These include: (1) glycogen synthase kinase-3 (GSK-3) and protein kinase C (PKC), (2) the purinergic system, (3) histone deacetylases (HDACs), (4) the melatonergic system, (5) the tachykinin neuropeptides system, (6) the glutamatergic system, and (7) oxidative stress and bioenergetics. The paper reviews data on new compounds that have shown antimanic or antidepressant effects in subjects with mood disorders, or similar effects in preclinical animal models. Overall, an improved understanding of the neurobiological underpinnings of mood disorders is critical in order to develop targeted treatments that are more effective, act more rapidly, and are better tolerated than currently available therapies

Female dispersal and isolation-by-distance of Nasonia vitripennis populations in a local mate competition context

Dispersal behavior directly influences the level of inbreeding, but the effect of inbreeding avoidance on dispersal is less well studied. The parasitoid wasp Nasonia vitripennis (Walker) (Hymenoptera: Chalcidoidea: Pteromalidae) is known to mate exclusively on the natal patch, and females are the only dispersing sex. A previous study has shown that foundresses on a patch are typically unrelated, implying that females disperse for a considerable distance from their natal patch after mating. We investigated dispersal of N. vitripennis on two scales. On a local scale we used a mark-release-recapture experiment, and on the larger scale we investigated isolation by distance using a population genetic approach. We found that N. vitripennis females are long-distance dispersers, capable of covering at least 2 km in 48 h. Populations within a range of 100 km showed no substructure, but larger distances or major geographical barriers restricted gene flow and led to significant population structure. The results provide a basis for future research on dispersal of parasitoids and are discussed in the context of dispersal abilities and inbreeding avoidance in Nasonia

Exploring Internal Numeracy in Language Models: A Case Study on ALBERT

It has been found that Transformer-based language models have the ability to perform basic quantitative reasoning. In this paper, we propose a method for studying how these models internally represent numerical data, and use our proposal to analyze the ALBERT family of language models. Specifically, we extract the learned embeddings these models use to represent tokens that correspond to numbers and ordinals, and subject these embeddings to Principal Component Analysis (PCA). PCA results reveal that ALBERT models of different sizes, trained and initialized separately, consistently learn to use the axes of greatest variation to represent the approximate ordering of various numerical concepts. Numerals and their textual counterparts are represented in separate clusters, but increase along the same direction in 2D space. Our findings illustrate that language models, trained purely to model text, can intuit basic mathematical concepts, opening avenues for NLP applications that intersect with quantitative reasoning.Comment: 4 pages + references, 4 figures.
