Characterisation of a new Fast CPC and its application for atmospheric particle measurements
A new Fast CPC (FCPC) using butanol as working fluid has been built based on the setup described by Wang et al. (2002). In this study, we describe the new instrument. The functionality and stable operation of the FCPC in the laboratory, as well as under atmospheric conditions, is demonstrated. The counting efficiency was measured for three temperature differences between FCPC saturator and condenser, 25, 27, and 29 K, subsequently resulting in a lower detection limit between 6.1 and 8.5 nm. Above 25 nm the FCPC reached 98–100% counting efficiency compared to an electrometer used as the reference instrument. The FCPC demonstrated its ability to perform continuous measurements over a few hours in the laboratory with respect to the total particle counting. The instrument has been implemented into the airborne measurement platform ACTOS to perform measurements in the atmospheric boundary layer. Therefore, a stable operation over two hours is required. The mixing time of the new FCPC was estimated in two ways using a time series with highly fluctuating particle number concentrations. The analysis of a sharp ramp due to a concentration change results in a mixing time of 5 ms while a spectral analysis of atmospheric data demonstrates that for frequencies up to 10 Hz coherent structures can be resolved before sampling noise dominates
Organic-rich sediments in brine-filled Shaban- and Kebrit Deeps, Northern Red Sea
The element compositions Si, Ca and Al of up to 2 1.1 ka old sediments in about 10 in long cores from the southern basin of the Shaban and Kebrit deeps in the northern Red Sea allowed a classification of major sediment types in carbonate sands and -muds and siliceous oozes. A FeOOH-enriched sediment horizon and a few samples with high Zn values in the Kebrit core indicate a hydrothermal origin probably near the brine-sea water interface with subsequent transport of hydrothermal compounds into the deep sediments. High organic carbon contents up to 8.4% are positively correlated with the Ba concentrations, which suggests that high bioproductivity, and rapid deposition (C-14 dating suggests a sedimentation rate near 70 cm/ka) led to the formation of sapropelic sediments between 11.8 and 13.6 ka (Younger Dryas). Organic petrological observations showed that the sediment organic material largely consists of <20 gm-sized roundish fecal pellets (intimate mixtures of organic matter and inorganic constituents) and bituminite. Terrestrial organic matter (pollens of land plants, fusinite etc.) is very rare in the sediment cores from both deeps. Organic-geochemical investigations of kerogens and organic extracts show that a significant (hydrothermal) hydrocarbon production did not occur in near-surface sediments of the Shaban and Kebrit deeps. Rock Eval pyrolysis of kerogens characterised the organic matter to be of type II quality. The delta C-13 values of the kerogens from the most prominent sapropel in the Shaban deep indicate an enrichment of(C-12-rich) nutrients in the water column during postglacial sapropel formation in the Younger Dryas. The n-alkane spectra are dominated by short chain lengths between n-C-15 and n-C-25 Prevailing n-C-15 to n-C-25 alkanes in low mature sediments are indicative of algal and microbial source. Pristane/phytane ratios are generally low (< I to similar to 1) which suggests that anoxic conditions prevailed within the anaerobic brine-filled deeps for the whole time covered by the sediments. This again indicates that sapropel formation was caused by high bioproductivity in the northern Red Sea rather than episodic stagnation with better preservation of the organic matter. Long-chain alkenones and sterols are the dominating compounds of the lipid fraction. Cholesterol contents in the sediment cores reflect phases of eukaryotes production in the water column, whereas the positive correlations of dinosterol with TOC and the amounts of total extract suggests that the major organic carbon source in the northern Red Sea during postglacial high-productivity stages were dinoflagellates. Another important carbon source, however, is indicated by the occurrence of 22,29,30-trisnorhopan-21 -one (TNH). Although the formation of TNH from its precursors is not fully understood, this compound probably results from microbial. degradation of intact bacteriohopanepolyols (BHP), which can be used as indicators for bacterial abundances and phyla. TNH is most likely produced at the brine-sea water interface where sedimenting organic matter accumulates and, if the redoxcline corresponds to the density gradient, the organic matter is subjected to efficient aerobic bacterial degradation processes. However, during high bioproductivity stage (Younger Dryas) the redoxcline was probably higher in the water column and thus, a significant TNH production at the brine-sea water interface did not occur at times of sapropel formation in the northern Red Sea deeps. Primjena bioloških markera u identifikaciji zagađivača naftnog tipa u recentnim sedimentima - aluvijalna formacija rijeke Dunav, Rafinerija nafte Pančevo
The purpose of this paper was to examine to which extent the abundance and distribution of certain biological markers may be used for the identification of oil-type pollutants in recent sediments and ground waters. The samples were taken from the area of the Oil Refinery Pančevo (alluvial formation of the Danube River). The organic matter of the investigated samples was isolated using an extraction method with chloroform. The group composition and usual biological markers were analyzed in the obtained extracts. n-Alkanes and acyclic isoprenoids, pristane and phytane were analyzed using gas chromatographie (GC) analysis of saturated hydrocarbons. Polycyclic alkanes of the sterane and terpane type were analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), i.e. by analyzing the carbamide non-adduct of the total alkane fraction (Single Ion Monitoring SIM-technique). The obtained results indicate that n-alkanes can be used for the identification of oil-type pollutants (for example, if the oil-pollutant is biodegraded or present in very low concentrations), and steranes and triterpanes can be used as very reliable indicators of oil-type pollution in recent sediments and ground waters.
ALADINA – an unmanned research aircraft for observing vertical and horizontal distributions of ultrafine particles within the atmospheric boundary layer
This paper presents the unmanned research aircraft Carolo P360 "ALADINA"
(Application of Light-weight Aircraft for
Detecting IN situ Aerosol) for investigating the
horizontal and vertical distribution of ultrafine particles in the
atmospheric boundary layer (ABL). It has a wingspan of 3.6 m, a maximum
take-off weight of 25 kg and is equipped with aerosol instrumentation and
meteorological sensors. A first application of the system, together with the
unmanned research aircraft MASC (Multi-Purpose Airborne Carrier) of the
Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen (EKUT), is described. As small
payload for ALADINA, two condensation particle counters (CPC) and one optical
particle counter (OPC) were miniaturised by re-arranging the vital parts and
composing them in a space-saving way in the front compartment of the
airframe. The CPCs are improved concerning the lower detection threshold and
the response time to less than 1.3 s. Each system was characterised in the
laboratory and calibrated with test aerosols. The CPCs are operated in this
study with two different lower detection threshold diameters of 11 and 18 nm.
The amount of ultrafine particles, which is an indicator for new particle
formation, is derived from the difference in number concentrations of the two
CPCs (ΔN). Turbulence and thermodynamic structure of the
boundary layer are described by measurements of fast meteorological sensors
that are mounted at the aircraft nose. A first demonstration of ALADINA and a
feasibility study were conducted in Melpitz near Leipzig, Germany, at the
Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) station of the Leibniz Institute for
Tropospheric Research (TROPOS) on 2 days in October 2013. There, various
ground-based instruments are installed for long-term atmospheric monitoring.
The ground-based infrastructure provides valuable additional background
information to embed the flights in the continuous atmospheric context and is
used for validation of the airborne results. The development of the boundary
layer, derived from backscatter signals of a portable Raman lidar
POLLYXT, allows a quick overview of the current vertical structure
of atmospheric particles. Ground-based aerosol number concentrations are
consistent with the results from flights in heights of a few metres. In
addition, a direct comparison of ALADINA aerosol data and ground-based
aerosol data, sampling the air at the same location for more than 1 h, shows
comparable values within the range of ± 20 %. MASC was operated
simultaneously with complementary flight patterns. It is equipped with the
same meteorological instruments that offer the possibility to determine
turbulent fluxes. Therefore, additional information about meteorological
conditions was collected in the lowest part of the atmosphere. Vertical
profiles up to 1000 m in altitude indicate a high variability with distinct
layers of aerosol, especially for the small particles of a few nanometres in
diameter on 1 particular day. The stratification was almost neutral and two
significant aerosol layers were detected with total aerosol number
concentrations up to 17 000 ± 3400 cm−3 between 180 and 220 m
altitude and 14 000 ± 2800 cm−3 between 550 and 650 m. Apart
from those layers, the aerosol distribution was well mixed and reached the
total number concentration of less than 8000 ± 1600 cm−3. During
another day, the distribution of the small particles in the lowermost ABL was
related to the stratification, with continuously decreasing number
concentrations from 16 000 ± 3200 cm−3 to a minimum of
4000 ± 800 cm−3 at the top of the inversion at 320 m. Above this,
the total number concentration was rather constant. In the region of 500 to
600 m altitude, a significant difference of both CPCs was observed. This
event occurred during the boundary layer development in the morning and
represents a particle burst within the ABL
Airborne observations of newly formed boundary layer aerosol particles under cloudy conditions
This study describes the appearance of ultrafine boundary layer aerosol particles under classical "non-favourable" conditions at the research site of TROPOS (Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research). Airborne measurements of meteorological and aerosol properties of the atmospheric boundary layer (ABL) were repeatedly performed with the unmanned aerial system ALADINA (Application of Light-weight Aircraft for Detecting IN-situ Aerosol) during three seasons between October 2013 and July 2015. More than 100 measurement flights were conducted on 23 different days with a total flight duration of 53h. In 26% of the cases, maxima of ultrafine particles were observed close to the inversion layer at altitudes between 400 and 600m and the particles were rapidly mixed vertically and mainly transported downwards during short time intervals of cloud gaps. This study focuses on two measurement days affected by low-level stratocumulus clouds, but different wind directions (NE, SW) and minimal concentrations (<4.6µgm−3) of SO2, as a common indicator for precursor gases at ground. Taken from vertical profiles, the onset of clouds led to a non-linearity of humidity that resulted in an increased turbulence at the local-scale and caused fast nucleation e.g., but in relation to rapid dilution of surrounding air, seen in sporadic clusters of ground data, so that ultrafine particles disappeared in the verticality. The typical "banana shape" of new particle formation (NPF) and growth was not seen at ground and thus these days might not have been classified as NPF event days by pure surface studies
Narratives of Change and Theorisations on Continuity: the Duality of the Concept of Emerging Power in International Relations
The James Webb Space Telescope Mission
Twenty-six years ago a small committee report, building on earlier studies,
expounded a compelling and poetic vision for the future of astronomy, calling
for an infrared-optimized space telescope with an aperture of at least .
With the support of their governments in the US, Europe, and Canada, 20,000
people realized that vision as the James Webb Space Telescope. A
generation of astronomers will celebrate their accomplishments for the life of
the mission, potentially as long as 20 years, and beyond. This report and the
scientific discoveries that follow are extended thank-you notes to the 20,000
team members. The telescope is working perfectly, with much better image
quality than expected. In this and accompanying papers, we give a brief
history, describe the observatory, outline its objectives and current observing
program, and discuss the inventions and people who made it possible. We cite
detailed reports on the design and the measured performance on orbit.Comment: Accepted by PASP for the special issue on The James Webb Space

Thoracolumbar Rotation During Tai Chi Movements—A Biomechanical Analysis of the Entire Peking Style Routine
The impact of spinal mobility and sagittal spinal shape on the development of balance impairment supports the hypothesis that enhancing spine flexibility results in an improvement in postural balance ability. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate whether the range of motion of thoracolumbar rotation during the movements of the Tai Chi Peking style routine is sufficient to improve thoracolumbar flexibility. Three-dimensional kinematic and kinetic data were collected from eight athletes of the German Wushu Federation, while performing all movements of the entire Peking style routine (1) in a competition version corresponding to national/international championships and (2) in a health sport version performed with shorter and higher stances (i.e. a smaller distance between the feet and thus less knee flexion). For each movement the total mean and standard deviation values for the total range of motion of thoracolumbar rotation was calculated. Statistical analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test for paired differences. Eight movements showed major differences (10.12–19.73°) between the two versions. For the remaining movements, only minor differences (0.7–9.56°) were observed. All movements performed on both sides showed no significant lateral differences. Most of the Tai Chi movements, regardless of the performed version, cover a range of motion of thoracolumbar rotation that has the potential to lead to an improvement of thoracolumbal spine flexibility with appropriate training. The most effective single movements (25.97–72.22°) are Brush Knee and Step Forward, Step Back and Repulse Monkey, Grasp the Sparrow‘s Tail, Wave Hand in the Clouds, and Fair Lady Weaves with Shuttle.</jats:p
