CCD Photometry of a Newly Confirmed SU UMa-Type Dwarf Nova, NSV 4838

We present time-resolved CCD photometry of a dwarf nova NSV 4838 (UMa 8, SDSS J102320.27+440509.8) during the 2005 June and 2007 February outburst. Both light curves showed superhumps with a mean period of 0.0699(1) days for the 2005 outburst and 0.069824(83) days for the 2007 outburst, respectively. Using its known orbital period of 0.0678 days, we estimated the mass ratio of the system to be qq=0.13 based on an empirical relation. Although the majority of SU UMa-type dwarf novae having similar superhump periods show negative period derivatives, we found that the superhump period increased at P˙\dot{P} / PshP_{\rm sh}=+7(+3, -4)×105\times10^{-5} during the 2007 superoutburst. We also investigated long-term light curves of NSV 4838, from which we derived 340 days as a supercycle of this system.Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures, accepted for PAS

Abstract

Background

Deterioration of peroxisomal β-oxidation activity causes an accumulation of very long chain saturated fatty acids (VLCSFA) in various organs. We have recently reported that the levels of VLCSFA in the plasma and/or membranes of blood cells were significantly higher in patients with metabolic syndrome and in patients with coronary artery disease than the controls. The aim of the present study is to investigate the effect of VLCSFA accumulation on inflammatory and oxidative responses in VLCSFA-accumulated macrophages derived from X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy (X-ALD) protein (ALDP)-deficient mice.

Results

Elevated levels of VLCSFA were confirmed in macrophages from ALDP-deficient mice. The levels of nitric oxide (NO) production stimulated by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and interferon-γ (IFN-γ), intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), and pro-inflammatory cytokines, including tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interluekin-6 (IL-6), and interleukin-12p70 (IL-12p70), were significantly higher in macrophages from ALDP-deficient mice than in those from wild-type mice. The inducible NO synthase (iNOS) mRNA expression also showed an increase in macrophages from ALDP-deficient mice.

Conclusion

These results suggested that VLCSFA accumulation in macrophages may contribute to the pathogenesis of inflammatory diseases through the enhancement of inflammatory and oxidative responses.</p

Impact of aspirin on biochemical recurrence of prostate cancer after robot assisted radical prostatectomy in a multicenter retrospective cohort study

This study evaluated the impact of aspirin on the biochemical recurrence (BCR) rate following robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) in patients. A database search identified patients who underwent RARP for pT2-3N0M0 disease at any of 25 centers between 2011 and 2022, categorized into aspirin (n = 350) and control groups (n = 5857). Adjustment by 1:1 propensity score matching (PSM) and Mahalanobis distance matching (MDM) created 350 matched pairs. The effect of aspirin on the BCR rate was evaluated by analysis of BCR-free survival. After PSM and MDM, the 3-year BCR-free rate was significantly better in the aspirin group (85.0%, 95% confidence interval [CI] 80.8–89.4) than in the control group (PSM, 74.5%, 95% CI 66.5–83.5, p = 0.021; MDM, 74.7%, 95% CI 66.3–84.3, p = 0.037). In the analysis of high-risk subgroups, patients in the aspirin group with an ISUP (International Society of Urological Pathology) grade ≥ 4 had a significantly lower recurrence rate in both matched groups (PSM, hazard ratio 0.44, 95% CI 0.22–0.88; MDM, hazard ratio 0.45, 95% CI 0.23–0.90). In conclusion, this study suggests that aspirin could enhance BCR-free survival post-RARP, especially in patients with higher ISUP grades.Citation: Shuhei Suzuki, Hiromitsu Negoro, Masashi Kubota, Takayuki Sumiyoshi, Ryoichi Saito, Tomoya Okuno, Takehiko Segawa, Shigeki Fukuzawa, Hiroyuki Onishi, Kodai Hattahara, Kanji Nagahama, Yuya Sekine, Ryoma Kurahashi, Kimihiro Shimatani, Atsuro Sawada, Shusuke Akamatsu, Hiroyuki Nishiyama, Takayuki Goto, Takashi Kobayashi, Impact of aspirin on biochemical recurrence of prostate cancer after robot assisted radical prostatectomy in a multicenter retrospective cohort study, Scientific Reports, 15(1), 2025-01-15, https://doi.org/10.1038/s41598-025-86521-

Gravitational Wave Physics and Astronomy in the nascent era

    Get PDF
The detections of gravitational waves (GW) by the LIGO/Virgo collaborations provide various possibilities for both physics and astronomy. We are quite sure that GW observations will develop a lot, both in precision and in number, thanks to the continuous work on the improvement of detectors, including the expected new detector, KAGRA, and the planned detector, LIGO-India. On this occasion, we review the fundamental outcomes and prospects of gravitational wave physics and astronomy. We survey the development, focusing on representative sources of gravitational waves: binary black holes, binary neutron stars, and supernovae. We also summarize the role of gravitational wave observations as a probe of new physics
