Optical Fiber Illumination System for visual flight simulation
An electronically controlled lighting system simulating runway, aircraft carrier, and landing aid lights for flight simulations is described. The various colored lights that would be visible to a pilot by day, at dusk, or at night are duplicated at the distances the lights would normally become visible. Plastic optical fiber illuminators using tungsten halogen lights are distributed behind the model. The tips of the fibers of illuminators simulating runway lights are bevelled in order that they may be seen from long distances and at low angles. Fibers representing taxiway lights are pointed and polished for omni-directional visibility. The electronic intensity controls, which can be operated either manually or remotely, regulate the intensity of the lights to simulate changes in distance. A dichronic mirror, infrared filter system is used to maintain color integrity
Load positioning system with gravity compensation
A load positioning system with gravity compensation has a servomotor, position sensing feedback potentiometer and velocity sensing tachometer in a conventional closed loop servo arrangement to cause a lead screw and a ball nut to vertically position a load. Gravity compensating components comprise the DC motor, gears, which couple torque from the motor to the lead screw, and constant current power supply. The constant weight of the load applied to the lead screw via the ball nut tend to cause the lead screw to rotate, the constant torque of which is opposed by the constant torque produced by the motor when fed from the constant current source. The constant current is preset as required by the potentiometer to effect equilibration of the load which thereby enables the positioning servomotor to see the load as weightless under both static and dynamic conditions. Positioning acceleration and velocity performance are therefore symmetrical
Thumb-actuated two-axis controller
A two axis joystick controller is described. It produces at least one output signal in relation to pivotal displacement of a member with respect to an intersection of the two axes. The member is pivotally movable on a support with respect to the two axes. The support has a centrally disposed aperture. A light source is mounted on the pivotally movable member above the aperture to direct light through the aperture. A light sensor is mounted below the aperture in the support at the intersection of the two axes to receive the light from the light source directed through the aperture. The light sensor produces at least one output signal related to a location on the sensor at which the light from the light source strikes the sensor

This paper uses a combination of archival sources and oral testimonies to evaluate the role that training (both internal and external) played in determining the promotion prospects of those employed by Barclays Bank during the post-World War II era. In addition to this, it also looks at the extent to which less formal training and learning practices continued to play a role in the career development process within Barclays. Ultimately,

A Review of High School Level Astronomy Student Research Projects over the last two decades
Since the early 1990s with the arrival of a variety of new technologies, the
capacity for authentic astronomical research at the high school level has
skyrocketed. This potential, however, has not realized the bright-eyed hopes
and dreams of the early pioneers who expected to revolutionise science
education through the use of telescopes and other astronomical instrumentation
in the classroom. In this paper, a general history and analysis of these
attempts is presented. We define what we classify as an Astronomy Research in
the Classroom (ARiC) project and note the major dimensions on which these
projects differ before describing the 22 major student research projects active
since the early 1990s. This is followed by a discussion of the major issues
identified that affected the success of these projects and provide suggestions

Probing the Emission States of PSR J1107−5907
The emission from PSR J1107−5907 is erratic. Sometimes the radio pulse is undetectable, at other times the pulsed emission is weak, and for short durations the emission can be very bright. In order to improve our understanding of these state changes, we have identified archival data sets from the Parkes radio telescope in which the bright emission is present, and find that the emission never switches from the bright state to the weak state, but instead always transitions to the "off" state. Previous work had suggested the identification of the "off" state as an extreme manifestation of the weak state. However, the connection between the "off" and bright emission reported here suggests that the emission can be interpreted as undergoing only two emission states: a "bursting" state consisting of both bright pulses and nulls, and the weak emission state
Radio observations of two intermittent pulsars: PSRs J1832+0029 and J1841-0500
We present long-term observations of two intermittent pulsars,
PSRs~J1832+0029 and J18410500 using the Parkes 64\,m radio telescope. The
radio emission for these pulsars switches "off" for year-long durations. Our
new observations have enabled us to improve the determination of the on-off
timescales and the spin down rates during those emission states. In general our
results agree with previous studies of these pulsars, but we now have
significantly longer data spans. We have identified two unexpected signatures
in the data. Weak emission was detected in a single observation of
PSR~J18320029 during an "off" emission state. For PSR~J18410500, we
identified a quasi-periodic fluctuation in the intensities of the detectable
single pulses, with a modulation period between 21 and 36 pulse periods.Comment: 7 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in Ap
The PULSE@Parkes project: A new observing technique for long-term pulsar monitoring
The PULSE@Parkes project has been designed to monitor the rotation of radio
pulsars over time spans of days to years. The observations are obtained using
the Parkes 64-m and 12-m radio telescopes by Australian and international high
school students. These students learn the basis of radio astronomy and
undertake small projects with their observations. The data are fully calibrated
and obtained with the state-of-the-art pulsar hardware available at Parkes. The
final data sets are archived and are currently being used to carry out studies
of 1) pulsar glitches, 2) timing noise, 3) pulse profile stability over long
time scales and 4) the extreme nulling phenomenon. The data are also included
in other projects such as gamma-ray observatory support and for the Parkes
Pulsar Timing Array project. In this paper we describe the current status of
the project and present the first scientific results from the Parkes 12-m radio
telescope. We emphasise that this project offers a straightforward means to
enthuse high school students and the general public about radio astronomy while
obtaining scientifically valuable data sets.Comment: accepted for publication by PAS
