Post quinquennem praeparationem foras daturo hanc de voe quae est φύσις disputationem liceat mihi nonnulla praefar, ne alia ab ea expectes atque dare volui. Anno 1918 eiusdem propositi prodiit liber quem scripsit John Walter Beardslee. Quamquam multa sunt in hoc prooemio quibus assentiri non dubito, nonnulla minus clare distinxit Beardslee mea quidem sententia. In prima enim sententia agit de 'history of... φύσις, or of an idea such as that word denotes'. Sed postquam huis rei investigandae duas monstravit vias earumque posteriorem, qua quis conatur nempe ' to reconstruct the actual development as it took place in the past', ambiguam esse ostendit, sic concludit: 'The result, then (!), of attempting to construct the history of the idea of nature in early Greece must be hypothetical'.
