A short note on the multiplier ideals of monomial space curves
Thompson (2014) exhibits a formula for the multiplier ideal with multiplier
lambda of a monomial curve C with ideal I as an intersection of a term coming
from the I-adic valuation, the multiplier ideal of the term ideal of I, and
terms coming from certain specified auxiliary valuations. This short note shows
it suffices to consider only one auxiliary valuation. This improvement is
achieved through a more intrinsic approach, reduction to the toric case.Comment: This version adds Corollary 10 and fixes several typo
A Tableau Method for Interval Temporal Logic
In this paper we present a complete tableau method for interval temporal logic including the projection operator. Central to our strategy is the identification of normal forms for all the operators of our logic. In effect, these normal forms give inductive definitions of the ITL operators. Then, in the style of Wolper, we define a tableau decision procedure to check satisfiability of our logic. For simplicity of presentation we work in the propositional setting
From ACT-ONE to Miranda, a Translation Experiment
It is now almost universally acknowledged that the data language ACT-ONE associated with the formal description technique LOTOS is inappropriate for the purpose of OSI formal description. In response to this the LOTOS restandardisation activity plans to replace ACT-ONE with a functional language. Thus, compatibility between ACT-ONE and the replacement data language becomes an issue. In response to this, we present an experimental investigation of backward compatibility between ACT-ONE and the new LOTOS data language. Specifically, we investigate translating ACT-ONE data types into the functional language Miranda. Miranda has been chosen as it is a widely used functional programming language and it is close in form to the anticipated new data language. This work serves as a ``verification of concept'' for translating ACT-ONE to the E-LOTOS data language. It identifies the bounds on embedding ACT-ONE in a functional data language. In particular, it indicates what can be translated and what cannot be translated. In addition, the paper reveals pertinent issues which can inform the E-LOTOS work. For example, which constructs are needed in E-LOTOS in order to support the class of data type specifications typically made in the LOTOS setting? We conclude with a number of specific recommendations for the E-LOTOS data language

Mexitl: Multimedia in Executable Interval Temporal Logic
This paper explores a formalism for describing a wide class of multimedia document constraints, based on an interval temporal logic. We describe the requirements on temporal logic specification that arise from the multimedia documents application area. In particular, we highlight a canonical specification example. Then we present the temporal logic formalism that we use. This extends existing interval temporal logic with a number of new features: actions, framing of actions, past operators, a projection-like operator called filter and a new handling of interval length. A model theory, logic and satisfaction relation are defined for the notation, a specification of the canonical example is presented, and a proof system for the logic is introduced
The contribution of fatigue and sleepiness to depression in patients attending the sleep laboratory for evaluation of obstructive sleep apnea
Purpose: A high prevalence of depressive symptomatology
has been reported amongst sufferers of obstructive sleep
apnea (OSA), but it remains unclear as to whether this is
due to their OSA or other factors associated with the
disorder. The current study aimed to assess the incidence
and aetiology of depression in a community sample of
individuals presenting to the sleep laboratory for diagnostic
assessment of OSA.
Methods: Forty-five consecutive individuals who presented to
the sleep laboratory were recruited; of those, 34 were
diagnosed with OSA, and 11 were primary snorers with no
clinical or laboratory features of OSA. Nineteen control
subjects were also recruited. Patients and controls completed
the Beck Depression Inventory, the Profile of Mood States
(POMS), and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale to assess their
mood and sleepiness, prior to their polysomnography.
Results: All patients reported significantly more depressive
symptoms compared with healthy controls, regardless of their degree of OSA. There were no significant differences
between OSA patients and primary snorers on any of the
mood and self-rated sleepiness measures. Depression scores
were not significantly associated with any of the nocturnal
variables. Regression analysis revealed that the POMS
fatigue subscale explained the majority of the variance in
subjects' depression scores.
Conclusions: Fatigue was the primary predictor of the level
of depressive symptoms in patients who attended the sleep
laboratory, regardless of the level of severity of sleep disordered breathing. When considering treatment options,
practitioners should be aware of the concomitant occurrence
of depressive symptoms and fatigue in patients presenting with sleep complaints, which may not be due
to a sleep disorder
Lunar Surface Systems Wet-Bath Design Evaluation
The goal of the current evaluation was to examine five different wet-bath architectural design concepts. The primary means of testing the concepts required participants to physically act-out a number of functional tasks (e.g., shaving, showering, changing clothes, maintenance) in order to give judgments on the affordance of the volume as based on the design concepts. Each of the concepts was designed in such a way that certain features were exploited - for example, a concept may have a large amount of internal stowage, but minimum amount of usable space to perform tasks. The results showed that the most preferred concept was one in which stowage and usable space were balanced. This concept allowed for a moderate amount of stowage with some suggested redesign, but would not preclude additional personal items such as clothing. This concept also allowed for a greater distance to be achieved between the toilet and the sink with minimum redesign, which was desirable. Therefore, the all-in-one (i.e., toilet, sink, and shower all occupying a single volume) wet-bath concept seemed to be a viable solution in which there is a minimal amount of overall volume available with certain lunar habitat configurations
