Implementation of an interior point source in the ultra weak variational formulation through source extraction
The Ultra Weak Variational Formulation (UWVF) is a powerful numerical method for the approximation of acoustic, elastic and electromagnetic waves in the time-harmonic regime. The use of Trefftz-type basis functions incorporates the known wave-like behaviour of the solution in the discrete space, allowing large reductions in the required number of degrees of freedom for a given accuracy, when compared to standard finite element methods. However, the UWVF is not well disposed to the accurate approximation of singular sources in the interior of the computational domain. We propose an adjustment to the UWVF for seismic imaging applications, which we call the Source Extraction UWVF. Differing fields are solved for in subdomains around the source, and matched on the inter-domain boundaries. Numerical results are presented for a domain of constant wavenumber and for a domain of varying sound speed in a model used for seismic imaging
Growing spaces : an evaluation of the mental health recovery programme using mixed methods
Background: Therapeutic horticulture is a nature-based method which includes a range of green activities such as gardening to promote wellbeing. It is believed that therapeutic horticulture provides a person-centred approach that can reduce social isolation for people with mental health problems.
Aims: The aim of the project was to evaluate the impact of a mental health recovery programme that used therapeutic horticulture as an intervention to reduce social inclusion and improve engagement for people with mental health problems.
Methods: A mixed-methods approach was used and data from four semi-structured focus group interviews, 11 exit interviews and 20 recovery star datasets were collected from September 2015 to October 2017. Qualitative data from the interviews were thematically analysed and quantitative data based on a recovery star outcomes tool were analysed using descriptive statistics to demonstrate trends and progression. The findings were then triangulated to provide a rich picture of the impact of the mental health recovery programme.
Results: The recovery star data indicated that participants were working towards self-reliance. Qualitative data from the exit interview and semi-structured focus groups found similar results. The triangulated findings highlight that the mental health recovery programme enabled participant
integration into the community through providing a space to grow and build self-confidence while re-engaging with society. The results suggest that using therapeutic horticulture as an intervention within the mental health recovery programme can support people with mental health problems to re-engage socially. Nature-based activities could be used within the ‘social prescribing’ movement to encourage partnership working between the NHS and voluntary sector organisations which
can complement existing mental health services
PKS2250-41: a case study for triggering
We present the results of a multiwavelength study of the z = 0.31 radio
source PKS2250-41. Integral field unit and long-slit spectroscopy obtained
using VIMOS and FORS1 on the VLT, and archival HST optical imaging observations
are used to study the morphology, kinematics and ionisation state of the
extended emission line region (EELR) surrounding this source, and also a
companion galaxy at a similar redshift. Near-infrared imaging observations
obtained using the NTT are used to analyse the underlying galaxy morphologies.
The EELR displays a complex variety of different gas kinematics and ionization
states, consistent with a mixture of radio source shocks and AGN
photoionization. The radio galaxy is likely to lie within a group environment,
and is plausibly undergoing interactions with one or more other objects. The
disk-like galaxy to the northeast of the radio source lies at a similar
redshift to the radio galaxy itself, and has its major axis position angle
aligned with the filamentary continuum and line emission extending outwards
from the radio galaxy. This filamentary structure is most plausibly interpreted
as a tidal structure associated with an interaction involving the radio source
host galaxy and the aligned companion galaxy to the north-east; this encounter
may have potentially triggered the current epoch of radio source activity.
Overall, PKS2250-41 displays some of the best evidence that radio source

Surface abundances of ON stars
Massive stars burn hydrogen through the CNO cycle during most of their
evolution. When mixing is efficient, or when mass transfer in binary systems
happens, chemically processed material is observed at the surface of O and B
stars. ON stars show stronger lines of nitrogen than morphologically normal
counterparts. Whether this corresponds to the presence of material processed
through the CNO cycle or not is not known. Our goal is to answer this question.
We perform a spectroscopic analysis of a sample of ON stars with atmosphere
models. We determine the fundamental parameters as well as the He, C, N, and O
surface abundances. We also measure the projected rotational velocities. We
compare the properties of the ON stars to those of normal O stars. We show that
ON stars are usually helium-rich. Their CNO surface abundances are fully
consistent with predictions of nucleosynthesis. ON stars are more chemically
evolved and rotate - on average - faster than normal O stars. Evolutionary
models including rotation cannot account for the extreme enrichment observed
among ON main sequence stars. Some ON stars are members of binary systems, but
others are single stars as indicated by stable radial velocities. Hence, mass
transfer is not a simple explanation for the observed chemical properties. We
conclude that ON stars show extreme chemical enrichment at their surface,
consistent with nucleosynthesis through the CNO cycle. Its origin is not clear

FUSE Observations of a Full Orbit of Hercules X-1: Signatures of Disk, Star, and Wind
We observed an entire 1.7 day orbit of the X-ray binary Hercules X-1 with the
Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE). Changes in the O VI 1032,1037
line profiles through eclipse ingress and egress indicate a Keplerian accretion
disk spinning prograde with the orbit. These observations may show the first
double-peaked accretion disk line profile to be seen in the Hercules X-1
system. Doppler tomograms of the emission lines show a bright spot offset from
the Roche lobe of the companion star HZ Her, but no obvious signs of the
accretion disk. Simulations show that the bright spot is too far offset from
the Roche lobe to result from uneven X-ray heating of its surface. The absence
of disk signatures in the tomogram can be reproduced in simulations which
include absorption from a stellar wind. We attempt to diagnose the state of the
emitting gas from the C III 977, C III 1175, and N III 991 emission lines. The

Hercules X-1: Empirical Models of UV Emission Lines
The UV emission lines of Hercules X-1, resolved with the HST GHRS and STIS,
can be divided into broad (FWHM 750 km/s) and narrow (FWHM 150 km/s)
components. The broad lines can be unambiguously identified with emission from
an accretion disk which rotates prograde with the orbit. The narrow lines,
previously identified with the X-ray illuminated atmosphere of the companion
star, are blueshifted at both phi=0.2 and phi=0.8 and the line flux at phi=0.2
is 0.2 of the flux at phi=0.8. Line ratio diagnostics show that the density of
the narrow line region is log n=13.4+/-0.2 and the temperature is
T=1.0+/-0.2x10^5 K. The symmetry of the eclipse ingress suggests that the line
emission on the surface of the disk is left-right symmetric relative to the
orbit. Model fits to the O V, Si IV, and He II line profiles agree with this
result, but fits to the N V lines suggest that the receding side of the disk is
brighter. We note that there are narrow absorption components in the N V lines
with blueshifts of 500 km/s.Comment: To be published in the Astrophysical Journa
Everyday cosmopolitanism in representations of Europe among young Romanians in Britain
The paper presents an analysis of everyday cosmopolitanism in constructions of Europe among young Romanian nationals living in Britain. Adopting a social representations approach, cosmopolitanism is understood as a cultural symbolic resource that is part of everyday knowledge. Through a discursively-oriented analysis of focus group data, we explore the ways in which notions of cosmopolitanism intersect with images of Europeanness in the accounts of participants. We show that, for our participants, representations of Europe are anchored in an Orientalist schema of West-vs.-East, whereby the West is seen as epitomising European values of modernity and progress, while the East is seen as backward and traditional. Our findings further show that representations of cosmopolitanism reinforce this East/West dichotomy, within a discourse of ‘Occidental cosmopolitanism’. The paper concludes with a critical discussion of the diverse and complex ideological foundations of these constructions of European cosmopolitanism and their implications
The VLT-FLAMES Tarantula Survey XXIII. Two massive double-lined binaries in 30 Doradus
Aims. We investigate the characteristics of two newly discovered short-period, double-lined, massive binary systems in the Large
Magellanic Cloud, VFTS 450 (O9.7 II–Ib + O7::) and VFTS 652 (B1 Ib + O9: III:).
Methods. We perform model-atmosphere analyses to characterise the photospheric properties of both members of each binary (denoting the “primary” as the spectroscopically more conspicuous component). Radial velocities and optical photometry are used to estimate the binary-system parameters.
Results. We estimate Teff = 27 kK, log g = 2.9 (cgs) for the VFTS 450 primary spectrum (34 kK, 3.6: for the secondary spectrum); and Teff = 22 kK, log g = 2.8 for the VFTS 652 primary spectrum (35 kK, 3.7: for the secondary spectrum). Both primaries show surface nitrogen enrichments (of more than 1 dex for VFTS 652), and probable moderate oxygen depletions relative to reference LMC abundances. We determine orbital periods of 6.89 d and 8.59 d for VFTS 450 and VFTS 652, respectively, and argue that the primaries must be close to filling their Roche lobes. Supposing this to be the case, we estimate component masses in the range ∼20–50 M⊙.
Conclusions. The secondary spectra are associated with the more massive components, suggesting that both systems are high-mass analogues of classical Algol systems, undergoing case-A mass transfer. Difficulties in reconciling the spectroscopic analyses with the light-curves and with evolutionary considerations suggest that the secondary spectra are contaminated by (or arise in) accretion disks
On the Nature of Andromeda IV
Lying at a projected distance of 40' or 9 kpc from the centre of M31,
Andromeda IV is an enigmatic object first discovered during van den Bergh's
search for dwarf spheroidal companions to M31. Being bluer, more compact and
higher surface brightness than other known dwarf spheroidals, it has been
suggested that And IV is either a relatively old `star cloud' in the outer disk
of M31 or a background dwarf galaxy. We present deep HST WFPC2 observations of
And IV and the surrounding field which, along with ground-based long-slit
spectroscopy and Halpha imagery, are used to decipher the true nature of this
puzzling object. We find compelling evidence that And IV is a background galaxy
seen through the disk of M31. The moderate surface brightness (SB(V)~24), very
blue colour (V-I<~0.6), low current star formation rate (~0.001 solar mass/yr)
and low metallicity (~10% solar) reported here are consistent with And IV being
a small dwarf irregular galaxy, perhaps similar to Local Group dwarfs such as
IC 1613 and Sextans A. Although the distance to And IV is not tightly
constrained with the current dataset, various arguments suggest it lies in the
range 5<~D<~8 Mpc, placing it well outside the confines of the Local Group. It
may be associated with a loose group of galaxies, containing major members UGC
64, IC 1727 and NGC 784. We report an updated position and radial velocity for

A multiwavelength approach to the SFR estimation in galaxies at intermediate redshifts
We use a sample of 7 starburst galaxies at intermediate redshifts (z ~ 0.4
and z ~ 0.8) with observations ranging from the observed ultraviolet to 1.4
GHz, to compare the star formation rate (SFR) estimators which are used in the
different wavelength regimes. We find that extinction corrected Halpha
underestimates the SFR, and the degree of this underestimation increases with
the infrared luminosity of the galaxies. Galaxies with very different levels of
dust extinction as measured with SFR(IR)/SFR(Halpha, uncorrected for
extinction) present a similar attenuation A[Halpha], as if the Balmer lines
probed a different region of the galaxy than the one responsible for the bulk
of the IR luminosity for large SFRs. In addition, SFR estimates derived from
[OII]3727 match very well those inferred from Halpha after applying the
metallicity correction derived from local galaxies. SFRs estimated from the UV
luminosities show a dichotomic behavior, similar to that previously reported by
other authors in galaxies at z <~ 0.4. Here we extend this result up to z ~
0.8. Finally, one of the studied objects is a luminous compact galaxy (LCG)
that may be suffering similar dust-enshrouded star formation episodes. These
results highlight the relevance of quantifying the actual L(IR) of LCGs, as
well as that of a much larger and generic sample of luminous infrared galaxies,
