Previous investigations have shown that the use of modern retrofit systems can significantly improve the behavior of URM infill walls subjected to variable out-of-plane loads. It has also been shown that the use of externally bonded retrofit systems can greatly reduce the amount of fragmentation and debris scatter that is found to occur in URM walls subjected to high intensity blast loads...The main objective of this study is to investigate, through static testing, the use of modern materials for the purpose of improving the behavior of URM walls subjected to blast loads. This study implemented externally bonded FRP grids and an elastomeric polyurea coating as strengthening materials --Introduction, page 5

Release of insulin from PLGA-alginate dressing stimulates regenerative healing of burn wounds in rats

Burn wound healing involves a complex set of overlapping processes in an environment conducive to ischemia, inflammation, and infection costing $7.5 billion/year in the US alone, in addition to the morbidity and mortality that occur when the burns are extensive. We previously showed that insulin, when topically applied to skin excision wounds, accelerates re-epithelialization, and stimulates angiogenesis. More recently, we developed an alginate sponge dressing (ASD) containing insulin encapsulated in PLGA microparticles that provides a sustained release of bioactive insulin for >20days in a moist and protective environment. We hypothesized that insulin-containing ASD accelerates burn healing and stimulates a more regenerative, less scarring, healing. Using a heat-induced burn injury in rats, we show that burns treated with dressings containing 0.04mg insulin/cm2, every three days for 9 days, have faster closure, faster rate of disintegration of dead tissue, and decreased oxidative stress. In addition, in insulin-treated wounds the pattern of neutrophil inflammatory response suggests faster clearing of the burn dead tissue. We also observe faster resolution of the pro-inflammatory macrophages. We also found that insulin stimulates collagen deposition and maturation with the fibers organized more like a basket weave (normal skin) than aligned and crosslinked (scar tissue). In summary , application of ASD-containing insulin-loaded PLGA particles on burns every three days stimulates faster and more regenerative healing. These results suggest insulin as a potential therapeutic agent in burn healing and, because of its long history of safe use in humans, insulin could become one of the treatments of choice when repair and regeneration are critical for proper tissue function. This work was supported by the National Natural Science Fund of China [grant numbers 81170761 and 81270909 (to Y.L.)]; the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada [grant numbers 204794-2011 (to M.H.) and private donor (to M.M.-G.)]

Image Scale Estimation Using Surface Textures for Quantitative Visual Inspection

    Get PDF
In this study, a learning-based scale estimation technique is proposed to enable quantitative evaluation of inspection regions. The underlying idea is that surface texture of structures (i.e. bridges or buildings) captured on images contains the scale information of the corresponding images, which is represented by pixel per physical dimension (e.g., mm, inch). This allows training a regression model that provides a relationship between surface textures on images and their corresponding scales. Deep convolutional neural network is used to extract scale-related features from the texture patches and estimate their scales. The trained model can be exploited to estimate scales for all images captured from structure surfaces that have similar textures. The capability of the proposed technique is fully demonstrated using data collected from surface textures of three different structures and achieves an overall average scale estimation error of less than 15%

Historical Background. Dendropark "Podillya" is a park-monument of landscape art of local importance in Ukraine. The park became a monument of landscape art of local importance in accordance with the order of the Chairman of the Executive Council of the Regional Council of Workers' Deputies No. 358-p. The Purpose of the Work is to carry out an inventory and to analyze the condition of green plantations of the Khmelnytsky Poddillya arboretum. Planting Inventory Technique. The inventory of green space included: determination of the total area of the Dendropark "Podillya", including trees, shrubs, flower beds, lawns, trails, etc.; determination of the number of trees and shrubs by species of plantations, breeds, age, diameter at the height of 1.3 m of tree, trunks and their condition. The inventory plan was implemented on a scale of 1:2000. The qualitative status of the trees of the plantation was determined by appropriate characteristics and divided into categories. Three classes of quality of the state of forest plantations were determined. Research Results. By landscape assessment , the territory of the Dendropark "Podillya" is divided into landscape sections, within which the basic assessments parameters of trees and shrubs and the landscape characteristics of the plantations were determined. In total, 149 taxa of trees and shrubs are represented on the territory of Dendropark "Podillya", respectively – from the Angiosperms (Magnoliophyta) – 114, Pinopsida – 35. Among species of Dendropark "Podillya" are the species such as birch (9%), common hornbeam (10%), small leaf linden (14%) and Norway spruce (10%). An important component of park planting is the grassy layer, which is sometimes decisive in shaping the environment. According to landscape assessment, 38 species of herbaceous plants have been accounted. According to the type of forest park landscape among the selected assessment areas, 34 are identified and subdivided with the type of landscape 1a. In small territories, closed complete plantations of vertical closure of 0.6-1.0, namely 5 species, are formed. The semi-open landscapes 2a and 2b, respectively, of 21 and 11 subdivisions and subdivisions, are represented in large numbers. Semi-open liquid plantings 2c, with a curvature of 0.1-0.2 are represented by 4 sections. Open areas with single trees 3a and without tree plants 3b are represented by 4 and 3 sections, respectively. Conclusions. In general, the recreational assessment of parkland is average. In addition to the landscaping characteristics described above, arboreal plantations have been inspected for existing tree plants. The result of this examination is the removal of some specimens to the wheelhouse, as their sanitary condition is unsatisfactory. In total, 11729 trees were counted in the arboretum (36.3 ha area).

This material may be found at https://ascelibrary.org/doi/10.1061/JSENDH.STENG-13130.This paper presents a numerical parametric study to examine the structural response of drilled shaft footings (pile caps) presenting different design characteristics, which have not been studied in depth in previous experimental studies. The numerical analyses were conducted with nonlinear finite element models representing typical designs and details of actual footings. The modeling scheme was validated using experimental data from large-scale drilled shaft footings. Key parameters of the numerical study included footing geometric properties, concrete strength, and reinforcement ratios. The results of the parametric studies were examined to identify key behavioral and design aspects to be considered when using 3D strut-and-tie models for the design of drilled shaft footings. The analysis results show that influences associated with footing and column aspect ratios were essentially negligible. However, it was estimated that an increase of the angle of inclination between the compression strut and the vertical axis led to significant reductions in footing stiffness and load capacity. The effect of shaft diameter was also examined in light of lateral concrete confining effects, and it was found that larger shaft diameters provide increased footing capacities. Analyses performed to estimate the influence of concrete compressive strength showed that splitting of the strut controlled the concrete-governed failure mechanism of footings. Finally, the models developed with different amounts of reinforcement revealed that increasing bottom mat reinforcement leads to increased ultimate loads; however, the rate of strength increase decreases with increasing reinforcement ratio. Providing a minimal amount of top mat and side face reinforcement was estimated to impact the structural responses of the footings positively; however, increasing the ratios of the top mat and side face reinforcing bars beyond this minimum did not significantly impact footing strength.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
