The long-term effects of military conscription on educational attainment and wages
This study investigates the long-term effects of peace-time military conscription on educational attainment and earnings by exploiting a policy change that exempted a complete birth cohort from military service. We find that compulsory military service decreases the proportion of Dutch university graduates by 1.5 percentage points from a baseline of 12.3 per cent.
In addition, being a conscript reduces the probability of obtaining a university degree by almost four percentage points. The effect of military service on earnings is also negative and long-lasting. Approximately 18 years after military service, we still find a negative effect of 3 to 4 per cent. The effect of conscription on educational attainment does not fully explain the wage reduction
Collaboratively Learning How To Use Data: The Process of Knowledge Creation
Data-based decision making in education has become increasingly important. In the Netherlands, school leaders and teachers work together in data teams to collaboratively create knowledge on data use to improve their education. However, more insight into the process of knowledge creation is required to further support data use in schools. We used Nonaka and Takeuchi’s model of knowledge creation to study this. All (21 and 24) meetings of two data teams were transcribed, coded and analyzed in this qualitative micro-process case study. Results showed, for example, that over time, both data teams reflected more often on their work and increasingly discussed the use of data. Differences existed as one team evaluated the quality of their data more often and thoroughly
Video Manipulation Techniques for the Protection of Privacy in Remote Presence Systems
Systems that give control of a mobile robot to a remote user raise privacy
concerns about what the remote user can see and do through the robot. We aim to
preserve some of that privacy by manipulating the video data that the remote
user sees. Through two user studies, we explore the effectiveness of different
video manipulation techniques at providing different types of privacy. We
simultaneously examine task performance in the presence of privacy protection.
In the first study, participants were asked to watch a video captured by a
robot exploring an office environment and to complete a series of observational
tasks under differing video manipulation conditions. Our results show that
using manipulations of the video stream can lead to fewer privacy violations
for different privacy types. Through a second user study, it was demonstrated
that these privacy-protecting techniques were effective without diminishing the
task performance of the remote user.Comment: 14 pages, 8 figure

Social Work at an Area Learning Center
This is a thesis for Augsburg College of Social Work. It presents a social work model and a research design for an Area Learning Center. The model emphasizes systems theory, Murrey Bowen\u27s theory and task-centered social work. The task-centered social worker could provide at-risk students with community and school resource linkage.
At-risk students will benefit from support services provided by the Area Learning Center task-oriented school social worker. The proposal includes, and independent and dependent variable, the conceptualization of at-risk, benefit, and task-centered social worker, and the characteristics of the study population, possible data analysis and protection of subjects. The proposal also includes a section on the limitations of the research design
Indispensable Homes in Third World Countries: Constructing a Home in Tijuana, Mexico
This project was created to explore a way in which poverty around the world could ultimately be reduced. The way in which this project intends to demonstrate a method used to reduce poverty is by building a home for a specific family in Tijuana, Mexico. In doing so, this home will act as a model home for a manual, comprised of steps that should be taken to construct similar homes throughout any third world country. The goal of this project is to highlight the importance of poverty in the world while also creating a buildable solution in order to reduce poverty rates on a global level. In order to make an accurate and usable guide for constructing homes for third world countries, creating this manual during the building process will minimize error within the project manual. This project manual will include in depth procedures in constructing the foundation, framing, roofing, exterior and interior of the building. Along with these detailed procedures this project manual will include detailed plans, a cut list, and an estimate of costs for this project. Furthermore, the project will incorporate an in depth analysis within this paper
