Characterization of the Yeast Gene YDL218W: A Role in Cell Wall Biosynthesis and Maintenance?

The budding yeast, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, is a common model organism used to study eukaryotic cell biology. S. cerevisiae is a fungus with a cell wall which makes it an excellent model for the study of antifungal agents. There are close to 1,000 genes of unknown function (GUFs) in S. cerevisiae. One of these is the gene YDL218W on which our research is focused. While little is known about this gene, evidence suggests that it may be involved in cell wall synthesis or maintenance. For example, YDL218W is induced by a transcription factor known to regulate genes involved in maintaining cell wall integrity. YDL218W also contains a domain found in proteins that are necessary for a functional cell wall. To test the idea that this gene has a role in cell wall synthesis or maintenance, we have exposed a strain carrying a YDL218W deletion to two agents known to disrupt the cell wall. We have measured changes in growth rate and viability as well as morphological changes using scanning electron microscopy

    Transgender Voice and Personal Identity

I would like to acknowledge my faculty research mentor, Clarion Mendes, for inspiring me to work with the transgender population. Without the support and encouragement from Clarion, I would not have embarked on this research project. I would also like to acknowledge my classmate and research partner, Nimra Burney, for her support throughout this research project. Lastly, I would like to thank my good friend, Haley Walker, for helping me design this image. This image is an illustration of a crucial body part that we use every day to communicate: the larynx. The colors of this particular larynx are light pink and light blue, which are the same colors as the transgender flag. Also referred to as the "voice box," the larynx sotres the vocal folds. Vocal folds are responsible for producing sound and allow us to change the pitch and volume of our voices. While many likely do not consciously think about their voices on a regular basis, individuals in the transgender community often feel their given voices do not match their identities. Many transgender individuals seek speech therapy in order to learn how to alter their pitch and volume to align more closely with their preferred gender and identity. My research included exploring the relationship between voice and identity in the transgender community. Alongside my research team, I conducted a literature review in order to better understand factors that contribute to the underpinnings of vocal identity as well as the barriers that make it challenging to develop a vocal identity.Ope

    Passionate rebel :

The first woman to lecture to women on physiology and anatomy, Mary Gove Nichols told women in 1838 to take control over their own health and advocated the Graham System which emphasized proper diet, exercise, and preventive medicine. Tying Grahamism to the hydropathic movement of the 1840s, she became a water cure physician specializing in obstetrics. Viewing pregnancy as a natural condition not an illness, she emphasized prenatal care, prepared childbirth, and early ambulation--in opposition to contemporary medical practice. She also spoke out for dress reform because current fashions were unhealthy as well as limited women's movement.A feminist foremother and passionate rebel, Mary Gove Nichols searched for a new vision of womanhood and leaped a century ahead of her time. Her fascinating career speaks to issues that concern feminism today as well as gives insight into the reform movements of the nineteenth century.Mary Gove Nichols was a fascinating woman whose multidimensional career affords provocative insights into early nineteenth century feminism. Throughout her life she struggled against the separation of spheres inherent in the Cult of True Womanhood and the Cult of Domesticity which defined the role of Jacksonian women. She challenged the concept that anatomy was destiny and sought autonomy for women. She wanted women to be self-reliant, to be physically healthy, to be economically independent, to enter sexual relationships motivated only by love, and to have control over their childbearing. To that end she was involved in many of the reforms of her day. She tried to find the feminist framework that would enable her to create a new social order in which women would be autonomous and live healthy, useful, and independent lives. She explored contemporary utopian experiments and the Free Love Movement to find options for economic and sexual freedom for women. Edgar Allan Poe included Mary Gove in his "The Literati of New York City." Her autobiographical novel, Mary Lyndon, was a passionate plea for the freedom and independence of women, and she hoped it would do for women what Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin had for slaves

Characterization of the Yeast Gene YDL218W: A Role in Cell Wall Biosynthesis and Maintenance

The goal of this research project is to characterize the function of a particular gene in budding yeast. The budding yeast is a common model organism used to study eukaryotic cell and molecular biology. The budding yeast is a fungus with a cell wall that makes it an excellent model for the study of anti-fungal agents. The gene of interest I am studying, YDL218W, is a gene of unknown function, but it is believed to be involved in cell wall maintenance. The reason behind this particular study is that the number of fatal fungi related diseases in humans are becoming more prevalent all around the world. This increase in fatal fungi related cases is in part due to fungi becoming resistant to the few anti-fungal drugs available. As this becomes more of a problem, there is a need for effective anti-fungal drugs
