    Get PDF
The use of fracture mechanics for predicting fracture and fatigue crack growth in metals is presented

Infrared continuum observations of the solar atmosphere

    Get PDF
The far-infrared wavelengths (10 microns to 1 mm) were used to study the spatial and temporal structure of the solar atmosphere. Observational results were obtained on flares, faculae, sunspots, and on the center-to-limb intensity distribution, as well as on time variability within these regions. A program of precise monitoring of slow variations in the integrated solar luminosity was shown to be feasible, and initial steps to implement observations were completed

The electromagnetic interchange mode in a partially ionized collisional plasma

    Get PDF
A collisional electromagnetic dispersion relation is derived from two-fluid theory for the interchange mode coupled to the Alfven, acoustic, drift and entropy modes in a partially ionized plasma. The fundamental electromagnetic nature of the interchange model is noted; coupling to the intermediate Alfven mode is strongly stabilizing for finite k sub z. Both ion viscous and ion-neutral stabilization are included, and it was found that collisions destroy the ion finite Larmor radius cutoff at short perpendicular wavelengths

    Relationships among the phases

    Get PDF
The overall flare process involves phenomena characterized as the impulsive and gradual phases, following the X-ray signature first recognized by Kane (1969). In addition, evidence exists for a pre-flare phase in some flares, and recent Solar Maximum Mission data have shown that a post-flare phase, in which extensive and energetically important coronal activity occurs, may also exist. The data to describe the pre-flare and post-flare phases are insufficient to place them properly into an overall picture of the energetics, aside from noting that these phases may indeed be significant from the energetics point of view. What is presently known is reviewed and comments are made about the possible interactions among the flare structures involved

High density constraint on the entropy instability

    Get PDF
The entropy instability squared is a nonisothermal effect which is eliminated by parallel ion pressure at high densities (k sub z lambda sub e 1/2 sq root of m/M), reducing previous growth rate estimates and the range of unstable parameters

    Stratospheric CCN sampling program

    Get PDF
Two one liter grab samples of stratospheric aerosol were returned from each of six U-2 sampling missions. Cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) spectra from each sample were obtained. Interest was centered on the effects of volcanic activity. Spurious particle generation was found to be a serious problem in container 9 LFT and a much smaller problem in container 9 RT. Initial studies of an option for improved sample containers and values were completed. A CCN spectrometer, able to operate at an internal pressure of 300 mb, was designed
