A new method of observing weak extended x-ray sources with RHESSI
We present a new method, fan-beam modulation, for observing weak extended
x-ray sources with the Reuven Ramaty High-Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager
(RHESSI). This space-based solar x-ray and gamma-ray telescope has much greater
sensitivity than previous experiments in the 3-25 keV range, but is normally
not well suited to detecting extended sources since their signal is not
modulated by RHESSI's rotating grids. When the spacecraft is offpointed from
the target source, however, the fan-beam modulation time-modulates the
transmission by shadowing resulting from exploiting the finite thickness of the
grids. In this paper we detail how the technique is implemented and verify its
consistency with sources with clear known signals that have occurred during
RHESSI offpointing: microflares and the Crab Nebula. In both cases the results
are consistent with previous and complementary measurements. Preliminary work
indicates that this new technique allows RHESSI to observe the integrated hard
x-ray spectrum of weak extended sources on the quiet Sun.Comment: Publishe
Contrasting Inequalities: Comparing Correlates of Health in Canada and the United States
Comparative health studies consistently find that Canadians on average are healthier than Americans. Comparing health status within and between Canada and the United States provides key insights into the distribution of inequalities in these two countries. Canada’s universal health care insurance system contrasts with the mixed system of the United States: universal care for seniors, private health care insurance for many, and no or intermittent coverage for others. These countries are also notably different in the extent of income and racial/ethnic inequalities. It is within this context that this study compares the relative strength of the relationships between social, economic, and demographic factors (sex, age, marital status, income, education, country of birth, and race/ethnicity) and health status in Canada and the United States. Evidence drawn from the 2002-2003 Joint Canada/United States Survey of Health reveals that the correlations between these factors, above all country of birth and race/ethnicity, and health are relatively stronger in the United States, reflecting differences in health care access and racial/ethnic-based inequalities between the countries. Online Cross-Sectional Monitoring of a Swirling Flame Using TDLAS Tomography
The purpose of this paper is to monitor the dynamic cross-sectional behavior of swirling flames using the tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) tomographic system. The newly developed online and highly spatially resolved imaging system based on TDLAS tomography was employed to monitor and reveal directly the reaction process in the swirling flame by reconstructing the 2-D distributions of temperature and H 2 O concentration over a cross section of the flame. The system was demonstrated to be capable of capturing the temperature distribution accurately and inferring the thermal expansion over the cross section of interest in the swirling flame generated by a model swirl injector operating in partially premixed combustion mode. As the equivalence ratio was decreased, thermal oscillations extracted from the real-time 2-D reconstructions were used to infer the instability of the swirling flame. Furthermore, the developed system was applied to capture dynamically the process of blowout of the swirling flame, illustrating that the system can provide firsthand and reliable visual data to help prevent the flame from lean blowout (LBO). This paper reports the first experimental observation of the dynamic cross-sectional behavior of the swirling flame, enabled by the high spatial and temporal resolutions provided by the TDLAS tomographic imaging system. The developed system can help better understand the LBO mechanism so as to improve the performance of low-emission gas turbine combustors.</p
Max '91: Flare research at the next solar maximum
To address the central scientific questions surrounding solar flares, coordinated observations of electromagnetic radiation and energetic particles must be made from spacecraft, balloons, rockets, and ground-based observatories. A program to enhance capabilities in these areas in preparation for the next solar maximum in 1991 is recommended. The major scientific issues are described, and required observations and coordination of observations and analyses are detailed. A program plan and conceptual budgets are provided
Peginterferon Alfa-2a and Ribavirin for 16 or 24 Weeks in HCV Genotype 2 or 3
Background
Patients infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) genotype 2 or 3 have sustained virologic response rates of approximately 80% after receiving treatment with peginterferon and ribavirin for 24 weeks. We conducted a large, randomized, multinational, noninferiority trial to determine whether similar efficacy could be achieved with only 16 weeks of treatment with peginterferon alfa-2a and ribavirin.
Methods
We randomly assigned 1469 patients with HCV genotype 2 or 3 to receive 180 μg of peginterferon alfa-2a weekly, plus 800 mg of ribavirin daily, for either 16 or 24 weeks. A sustained virologic response was defined as an undetectable serum HCV RNA level (milliliter) 24 weeks after the end of treatment.
Results
The study failed to demonstrate that the 16-week regimen was noninferior to the 24-week regimen. The sustained virologic response rate was significantly lower in patients treated for 16 weeks than in patients treated for 24 weeks (62% vs. 70%; odds ratio for 16 weeks vs. 24 weeks, 0.67; 95% confidence interval, 0.54 to 0.84; P
Conclusions

SDSS Standard Star Catalog for Stripe 82: the Dawn of Industrial 1% Optical Photometry
We describe a standard star catalog constructed using multiple SDSS
photometric observations (at least four per band, with a median of ten) in the
system. The catalog includes 1.01 million non-variable unresolved
objects from the equatorial stripe 82 ( 1.266) in
the RA range 20h 34m to 4h 00m, and with the corresponding band
(approximately Johnson V band) magnitudes in the range 14--22. The
distributions of measurements for individual sources demonstrate that the
photometric pipeline correctly estimates random photometric errors, which are
below 0.01 mag for stars brighter than (19.5, 20.5, 20.5, 20, 18.5) in ,
respectively (about twice as good as for individual SDSS runs). Several
independent tests of the internal consistency suggest that the spatial
variation of photometric zeropoints is not larger than 0.01 mag (rms). In
addition to being the largest available dataset with optical photometry
internally consistent at the 1% level, this catalog provides practical
definition of the SDSS photometric system. Using this catalog, we show that
photometric zeropoints for SDSS observing runs can be calibrated within nominal
uncertainty of 2% even for data obtained through 1 mag thick clouds, and
demonstrate the existence of He and H white dwarf sequences using photometric
data alone. Based on the properties of this catalog, we conclude that upcoming
large-scale optical surveys such as the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope will be

Fifteen new risk loci for coronary artery disease highlight arterial-wall-specific mechanisms
Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Although 58 genomic regions have been associated with CAD thus far, most of the heritability is unexplained, indicating that additional susceptibility loci await identification. An efficient discovery strategy may be larger-scale evaluation of promising associations suggested by genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Hence, we genotyped 56,309 participants using a targeted gene array derived from earlier GWAS results and performed meta-analysis of results with 194,427 participants previously genotyped, totaling 88,192 CAD cases and 162,544 controls. We identified 25 new SNP-CAD associations (P < 5 × 10(-8), in fixed-effects meta-analysis) from 15 genomic regions, including SNPs in or near genes involved in cellular adhesion, leukocyte migration and atherosclerosis (PECAM1, rs1867624), coagulation and inflammation (PROCR, rs867186 (p.Ser219Gly)) and vascular smooth muscle cell differentiation (LMOD1, rs2820315). Correlation of these regions with cell-type-specific gene expression and plasma protein levels sheds light on potential disease mechanisms
Effects of robotic-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy on surgical pathology specimens
Background
Robotic-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy (RALP) has greatly changed clinical management of prostate cancer. It is important for pathologists and urologists to compare RALP with conventional open radical retropubic prostatectomy (RRP), and evaluate their effects on surgical pathology specimens.
Methods
We retrospectively reviewed and statistically analyzed 262 consecutive RALP (n = 182) and RRP (n = 80) procedures performed in our institution from 2007 to 2010. From these, 49 RALP and 33 RRP cases were randomly selected for additional microscopic examination to analyze the degree of capsular incision and the amount of residual prostate surface adipose tissue.
Results
Positive surgical margins were present in 28.6% RALP and 57.5% RRP cases, a statistically significant difference. In patients with stage T2c tumors, which represent 61.2% RALP and 63.8% RRP patients, the positive surgical margin rate was 24.1% in the RALP group and 58.8% in the RRP group (statistically significant difference). For other pathologic stages, the differences in positive margins between RALP and RRP groups were not statistically significant. The incidence of positive surgical margins after RALP was related to higher tumor stage, higher Gleason score, higher tumor volume and lower prostate weight, but was not related to the surgeons performing the procedure. When compared with RRP, RALP also caused less severe prostatic capsular incision and maintained larger amounts of residual surface adipose tissue in prostatectomy specimens.
Conclusions
In this study RALP showed a statistically significant lower positive surgical margin rate than RRP. Analysis of capsular incision and amount of prostatic surface residual adipose tissue suggested that RALP caused less prostatic capsular damage than RRP
