QuickCurve: revisiting slightly non-planar 3D printing

Additive manufacturing builds physical objects by accumulating layers upon layers of solidified material. This process is typically done with horizontal planar layers. However, fused filament printers have the capability to extrude material along 3D curves. The idea of depositing out-of-plane, also known as non-planar printing, has spawned a trend of research towards algorithms that could generate non-planar deposition paths automatically from a 3D object. In this paper we introduce a novel algorithm for this purpose. Our method optimizes for a curved slicing surface. This surface is intersected with the input model to extract non-planar layers, with the objective of accurately reproducing the model top surfaces while avoiding collisions. Our formulation leads to a simple and efficient approach that only requires solving for a single least-square problem. Notably, it does not require a tetrahedralization of the input or iterative solver passes, while being more general than simpler approaches. We further explore how to orient the paths to follow the principal curvatures of the surfaces, how to filter spurious tiny features damaging the results, and how to achieve a good compromise of mixing planar and non-planar strategies within the same part. We present a complete formulation and its implementation, and demonstrate our method on a variety of 3D printed models

Effect of repeated mowing to reduce graminoid plant cover on the moss carpet at a Sphagnum farm in North America

Sphagnum farming is defined as the sustainable production of non-decomposed Sphagnum biomass on a cyclical and renewable basis. In this article, the influence and necessity of mowing graminoid plants to optimise Sphagnum growth in Sphagnum farming basins are examined. Repeated mowing was applied to reduce graminoid plant cover at two different stages of the production cycle (one-year-old and seven-year-old Sphagnum moss carpet at the beginning of the experiment) at an experimental Sphagnum farm in eastern Canada. Sphagnum growth (cover, biomass, moss layer thickness) was measured after three years of mowing. In addition, a greenhouse experiment was carried out to determine whether there is a threshold for graminoid plant cover beyond which mowing becomes necessary. Sphagnum cover and biomass were not affected by repeated mowing, even if mowing reduced the cover of graminoid plants. Thus, it appears that mowing is unnecessary if the dominant vascular species is a graminoid plant such as Eriophorum angustifolium, which accumulates minimal amounts of litter. Furthermore, high cover of Eriophorum angustifolium (up to 85 %) did not affect Sphagnum cover in a density-controlled greenhouse experiment. When the specific goal is Sphagnum fibre production, decisions about control of graminoid plants should be made after considering the cover, life form and litter accumulation potentials of the dominant graminoid species involved

Sphagnum farming from species selection to the production of growing media : a review

Sphagnum farming - the production of Sphagnum biomass on rewetted bogs - helps towards achieving global climate goals by halting greenhouse gas emissions from drained peat and by replacing peat with a renewable biomass alternative. Large-scale implementation of Sphagnum farming requires a wide range of know-how, from initial species selection up to the final production and use of Sphagnum biomass based growing media in horticulture. This article provides an overview of relevant knowledge accumulated over the last 15 years and identifies open questions.Peer reviewe

Objectives: To examine the psychosocial difficulties in a group of exposed adolescents aged 14 to 18 nine months after the railway accident. Compare adolescents who reach the clinical level of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to those who do not, depending on range severity of exposure and on symptoms of depression, anxiety and other related issues. Methods: The analyses were conducted on a suitability sample of 227 young people, with an average age of 15.96 years, in secondary levels III, IV and V, and living in the Mégantic sector of the Eastern Townships in the province of Quebec. Results: Almost half (41.5%) of adolescents report being severely exposed to the railway accident and one third (29.6%) has described severe PTSD symptoms reaching the clinical threshold. In addition, there appears to be a tendency for a higher proportion of girls compared to boys to have PTSD problems and depression and anxiety symptoms. The majority of adolescents report a non-problematic use of psychoactive substances, while 8% are at risk or problematic. Delinquency, mainly non-violent, is more common among boys. Adolescents who reach a clinical threshold of PTSD symptoms have been more severely exposed to the tragedy and report feeling more depressed and anxious. There was no significant relationship between PTSD and externalized behaviours. Conclusion: The results of the study highlight the relationship between a traumatic event such as the railway accident and the presence of PTSD symptoms as well as of internalized behaviours in a group of adolescents.
