Super Weyl invariance: BPS equations from heterotic worldsheets
It is well-known that the beta functions on a string worldsheet correspond to
the target space equations of motion, e.g. the Einstein equations. We show that
the BPS equations, i.e. the conditions of vanishing supersymmetry variations of
the space-time fermions, can be directly derived from the worldsheet. To this
end we consider the RNS-formulation of the heterotic string with (2,0)
supersymmetry, which describes a complex torsion target space that supports a
holomorphic vector bundle. After a detailed account of its quantization and
renormalization, we establish that the cancellation of the Weyl anomaly
combined with (2,0) finiteness implies the heterotic BPS conditions: At the one
loop level the geometry is required to be conformally balanced and the gauge

T-duality and closed string non-commutative (doubled) geometry
We provide some evidence that closed string coordinates will become
non-commutative turning on H-field flux background in closed string
compactifications. This is in analogy to open string non-commutativity on the
world volume of D-branes with B- and F-field background. The class of
3-dimensional backgrounds we are studying are twisted tori (fibrations of a
2-torus over a circle) and the their T-dual H-field, 3-form flux backgrounds
(T-folds). The spatial non-commutativity arises due to the non-trivial
monodromies of the toroidal Kahler resp. complex structure moduli fields, when
going around the closed string along the circle direction. In addition we study
closed string non-commutativity in the context of doubled geometry, where we
argue that in general a non-commutative closed string background is T-dual to a
commutative closed string background and vice versa. Finally, in analogy to
open string boundary conditions, we also argue that closed string momentum and

Membrane Sigma-Models and Quantization of Non-Geometric Flux Backgrounds
We develop quantization techniques for describing the nonassociative geometry
probed by closed strings in flat non-geometric R-flux backgrounds M. Starting
from a suitable Courant sigma-model on an open membrane with target space M,
regarded as a topological sector of closed string dynamics in R-space, we
derive a twisted Poisson sigma-model on the boundary of the membrane whose
target space is the cotangent bundle T^*M and whose quasi-Poisson structure
coincides with those previously proposed. We argue that from the membrane
perspective the path integral over multivalued closed string fields in Q-space
is equivalent to integrating over open strings in R-space. The corresponding
boundary correlation functions reproduce Kontsevich's deformation quantization
formula for the twisted Poisson manifolds. For constant R-flux, we derive
closed formulas for the corresponding nonassociative star product and its
associator, and compare them with previous proposals for a 3-product of fields
on R-space. We develop various versions of the Seiberg-Witten map which relate
our nonassociative star products to associative ones and add fluctuations to
the R-flux background. We show that the Kontsevich formula coincides with the
star product obtained by quantizing the dual of a Lie 2-algebra via convolution
in an integrating Lie 2-group associated to the T-dual doubled geometry, and
hence clarify the relation to the twisted convolution products for topological
nonassociative torus bundles. We further demonstrate how our approach leads to

Optimal leverage from non-ergodicity
In modern portfolio theory, the balancing of expected returns on investments
against uncertainties in those returns is aided by the use of utility
functions. The Kelly criterion offers another approach, rooted in information
theory, that always implies logarithmic utility. The two approaches seem
incompatible, too loosely or too tightly constraining investors' risk
preferences, from their respective perspectives. The conflict can be understood
on the basis that the multiplicative models used in both approaches are
non-ergodic which leads to ensemble-average returns differing from time-average
returns in single realizations. The classic treatments, from the very beginning
of probability theory, use ensemble-averages, whereas the Kelly-result is
obtained by considering time-averages. Maximizing the time-average growth rates
for an investment defines an optimal leverage, whereas growth rates derived
from ensemble-average returns depend linearly on leverage. The latter measure
can thus incentivize investors to maximize leverage, which is detrimental to
time-average growth and overall market stability. The Sharpe ratio is
insensitive to leverage. Its relation to optimal leverage is discussed. A
better understanding of the significance of time-irreversibility and
non-ergodicity and the resulting bounds on leverage may help policy makers in

Case Report: Delayed presentation and diagnosis of metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma in pregnancy
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is rare in women of reproductive age. If diagnosed, the underlying cirrhosis is associated with infertility in the majority of cases. There is limited literature on HCC in pregnancy, even more so for cases of metastatic disease. We present a case of delayed presentation and diagnosis of metastatic HCC in pregnancy. A 30-year-old pregnant woman presented at 23 weeks’ gestation and was diagnosed as HIV-infected, with anaemia. She was initiated on an efavirenz-based fixed-dose combination and oral haematinics. She subsequently presented at 32 weeks’ gestation with dyspnoea, and was diagnosed with pre-eclampsia. She was also found to have hepatosplenomegaly and ascites. She went into spontaneous preterm labour at 32 weeks and 4 days. A diagnosis of metastatic HCC was made postpartum, based on the radiological findings and biochemistry. Transcription profiling reveals potential mechanisms of dysbiosis in the oral microbiome of rhesus macaques with chronic untreated SIV infection.
A majority of individuals infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) have inadequate access to antiretroviral therapy and ultimately develop debilitating oral infections that often correlate with disease progression. Due to the impracticalities of conducting host-microbe systems-based studies in HIV infected patients, we have evaluated the potential of simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) infected rhesus macaques to serve as a non-human primate model for oral manifestations of HIV disease. We present the first description of the rhesus macaque oral microbiota and show that a mixture of human commensal bacteria and "macaque versions" of human commensals colonize the tongue dorsum and dental plaque. Our findings indicate that SIV infection results in chronic activation of antiviral and inflammatory responses in the tongue mucosa that may collectively lead to repression of epithelial development and impact the microbiome. In addition, we show that dysbiosis of the lingual microbiome in SIV infection is characterized by outgrowth of Gemella morbillorum that may result from impaired macrophage function. Finally, we provide evidence that the increased capacity of opportunistic pathogens (e.g. E. coli) to colonize the microbiome is associated with reduced production of antimicrobial peptides

How can we reduce the risk of mother-to-child transmission of HIV during invasive obstetric procedures?
Antenatal invasive obstetric procedures may be diagnostic or therapeutic, and are performed at different stages of pregnancy for various indications. The most common indication for an invasive procedure during pregnancy is for fetal karyotyping when a chromosomal abnormality or a genetic defect is suspected, either from the couple’s history or from ultrasound assessment of the fetus. Other less common but equally important indications may be diagnostic (fetoscopy, fetal tissue sampling, estimation of fetal haemoglobin) or therapeutic (aspiration of various fetal cavities, fetal blood transfusion and embryo reductions). In a high HIV prevalence setting like South Africa, a significant proportion of pregnant women in need of invasive procedures will be HIV-infected
Dental management considerations for the patient with an acquired coagulopathy. Part 1: Coagulopathies from systemic disease
Current teaching suggests that many patients are at risk for prolonged bleeding during and following invasive dental procedures, due to an acquired coagulopathy from systemic disease and/or from medications. However, treatment standards for these patients often are the result of long-standing dogma with little or no scientific basis. The medical history is critical for the identification of patients potentially at risk for prolonged bleeding from dental treatment. Some time-honoured laboratory tests have little or no use in community dental practice. Loss of functioning hepatic, renal, or bone marrow tissue predisposes to acquired coagulopathies through different mechanisms, but the relationship to oral haemostasis is poorly understood. Given the lack of established, science-based standards, proper dental management requires an understanding of certain principles of pathophysiology for these medical conditions and a few standard laboratory tests. Making changes in anticoagulant drug regimens are often unwarranted and/or expensive, and can put patients at far greater risk for morbidity and mortality than the unlikely outcome of postoperative bleeding. It should be recognised that prolonged bleeding is a rare event following invasive dental procedures, and therefore the vast majority of patients with suspected acquired coagulopathies are best managed in the community practice setting
Structure–properties relationships in fibre drawing of bioactive phosphate glasses
New bioactive phosphate glasses suitable for continuous fibre production are investigated in this work. The structure of both bulk and fibres from Na2O–CaO–MgO–P2O5 glasses has been studied by means of Raman and 31P and 23Na nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopies, and the structural results have been correlated with the mechanical properties of the fibres and the dissolution rate of the bulk glasses. It has been observed that the mechanical properties of the phosphate glass fibres are influenced by the glass network connectivity, while the dissolution rates are governed by the Qi speciation of the PO4 units. As seen in previous studies, molar volume seems to play an important role in the fragility behaviour of phosphate glasses. Here, a lower molar volume resulting from the increase in the oxygen packing density hinders the cooperative flow of the PO4 units throughout the glass network and, therefore, causes a reduction in the kinetic fragility
