Dynamic scaling of fronts in the quantum XX chain
The dynamics of the transverse magnetization in the zero-temperature XX chain
is studied with emphasis on fronts emerging from steplike initial magnetization
profiles. The fronts move with fixed velocity and display a staircase like
internal structure whose dynamic scaling is explored both analytically and
numerically. The front region is found to spread with time sub-diffusively with
the height and the width of the staircase steps scaling as t^(-1/3) and t^1/3,
respectively. The areas under the steps are independent of time, thus the
magnetization relaxes in quantized "steps" of spin-flips.Comment: 4 pages, 3 eps figures, RevTe
A Novel Method for Epileptic Seizure Detection Using Coupled Hidden Markov Models
We propose a novel Coupled Hidden Markov Model to detect epileptic seizures
in multichannel electroencephalography (EEG) data. Our model defines a network
of seizure propagation paths to capture both the temporal and spatial evolution
of epileptic activity. To address the intractability introduced by the coupled
interactions, we derive a variational inference procedure to efficiently infer
the seizure evolution from spectral patterns in the EEG data. We validate our
model on EEG aquired under clinical conditions in the Epilepsy Monitoring Unit
of the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Using 5-fold cross validation, we demonstrate
that our model outperforms three baseline approaches which rely on a classical
detection framework. Our model also demonstrates the potential to localize
seizure onset zones in focal epilepsy.Comment: To appear in MICCAI 2018 Proceeding
Multiple-clause constituent questions: intonation and variation in Hungarian
When a question phrase bears a grammatical function in a subordinate clause but the interrogativity it introduces extends over a higher clause, there are two main possibilities in Hungarian: (i) the question phrase appears preverbally in the clause over which it takes scope, or (ii) the question phrase appears in the subordinate clause while the scope of interrogativity is indicated by the presence of another question phrase in the higher clause (the scope-marking construction). In order to understand the features shared by these two types of question and the ways in which they differ, this article explores the intonation of these types of multiple-clause constituent questions in Hungarian. The results of experimental investigation are reported and discussed, and the significance of these findings is evaluated in the context of wider typological variation in the formation of multiple-clause constituent questions
Characterization and Performance of PADME's Cherenkov-Based Small-Angle Calorimeter
The PADME experiment, at the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati (LNF), in
Italy, will search for invisible decays of the hypothetical dark photon via the
process , where the escapes detection. The
dark photon mass range sensitivity in a first phase will be 1 to 24 MeV. We
report here on measurement and simulation studies of the performance of the
Small-Angle Calorimeter, a component of PADME's detector dedicated to rejecting
2- and 3-gamma backgrounds. The crucial requirement is a timing resolution of
less than 200 ps, which is satisfied by the choice of PbF crystals and the
newly released Hamamatsu R13478UV photomultiplier tubes (PMTs). We find a
timing resolution of 81 ps (with double-peak separation resolution of 1.8 ns)
and a single-crystal energy resolution of 5.7%/ with light yield of
2.07 photo-electrons per MeV, using 100 to 400 MeV electrons at the Beam Test
Facility of LNF. We also propose the investigation of a two-PMT solution
coupled to a single PbF crystal for higher-energy applications, which has

Reaction fronts in stochastic exclusion models with three-site interactions
The microscopic structure and movement of reaction fronts in reaction
diffusion systems far from equilibrium are investigated. We show that some
three-site interaction models exhibit exact diffusive shock measures, i.e.
domains of different densities connected by a sharp wall without correlations.
In all cases fluctuating domains grow at the expense of ordered domains, the
absence of growth is possible between ordered domains. It is shown that these
models give rise to aspects not seen in nearest neighbor models, viz. double
shocks and additional symmetries. A classification of the systems by their
symmetries is given and the link of domain wall motion and a free fermion

Structure–property relation and relevance of beam theories for microtubules: a coupled molecular and continuum mechanics study
Quasi-one-dimensional microtubules (MTs) in cells enjoy high axial rigidity but large transverse flexibility due to the inter-protofilament (PF) sliding. This study aims to explore the structure–property relation for MTs and examine the relevance of the beam theories to their unique features. A molecular structural mechanics (MSM) model was used to identify the origin of the inter-PF sliding and its role in bending and vibration of MTs. The beam models were then fitted to the MSM to reveal how they cope with the distinct mechanical responses induced by the inter-PF sliding. Clear evidence showed that the inter-PF sliding is due to the soft inter-PF bonds and leads to the length-dependent bending stiffness. The Euler beam theory is found to adequately describe MT deformation when the inter-PF sliding is largely prohibited. Nevertheless, neither shear deformation nor the nonlocal effect considered in the ‘more accurate’ beam theories can fully capture the effect of the inter-PF sliding. This reflects the distinct deformation mechanisms between an MT and its equivalent continuous body
Search for supersymmetry in proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV using identified top quarks
A search for supersymmetry is presented based on proton-proton collision events containing identified hadronically decaying top quarks, no leptons, and an imbalance p(T)(miss) in transverse momentum. The data were collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb(-1). Search regions are defined in terms of the multiplicity of bottom quark jet and top quark candidates, the p(T)(miss) , the scalar sum of jet transverse momenta, and themT2 mass variable. No statistically significant excess of events is observed relative to the expectation from the standard model. Lower limits on the masses of supersymmetric particles are determined at 95% confidence level in the context of simplified models with top quark production. For a model with direct top squark pair production followed by the decay of each top squark to a top quark and a neutralino, top squark masses up to 1020 GeVand neutralino masses up to 430 GeVare excluded. For amodel with pair production of gluinos followed by the decay of each gluino to a top quark-antiquark pair and a neutralino, gluino masses up to 2040 GeVand neutralino masses up to 1150 GeVare excluded.
