Consistent deformations method applied to a topological coupling of antisymmetric gauge fields in D=3
In this work we use the method of consistent deformations of the master
equation by Barnich and Henneaux in order to prove that an abelian topological
coupling between a zero and a two form fields in D=3 has no nonabelian
generalization. We conclude that a topologically massive model involving the
Kalb-Ramond two-form field does not admit a nonabelian generalization. The
introduction of a connection-type one form field keeps the previous result.Comment: 8 pages. To appear in Physics Letters
Hsp70 in mitochondrial biogenesis
The family of hsp70 (70 kilodalton heat shock protein) molecular chaperones plays an essential and diverse role in cellular physiology, Hsp70 proteins appear to elicit their effects by interacting with polypeptides that present domains which exhibit non-native conformations at distinct stages during their life in the cell. In this paper we review work pertaining to the functions of hsp70 proteins in chaperoning mitochondrial protein biogenesis. Hsp70 proteins function in protein synthesis, protein translocation across mitochondrial membranes, protein folding and finally the delivery of misfolded proteins to proteolytic enzymes in the mitochondrial matrix
Linear optical implementation of a single mode quantum filter and generation of multi-photon polarization entangled state
We propose a scheme to implement a single-mode quantum filter, which
selectively eliminates the one-photon state in a quantum state
. The vacuum state and the two photon state are
transmitted without any change. This scheme requires single-photon sources,
linear optical elements and photon detectors. Furthermore we demonstrate, how
this filter can be used to realize a two-qubit projective measurement and to
generate multi-photon polarization entangled states.Comment: revision submitted to PR
Local Variational Principle
A generalization of the Gibbs-Bogoliubov-Feynman inequality for spinless
particles is proven and then illustrated for the simple model of a symmetric
double-well quartic potential. The method gives a pointwise lower bound for the
finite-temperature density matrix and it can be systematically improved by the
Trotter composition rule. It is also shown to produce groundstate energies
better than the ones given by the Rayleigh-Ritz principle as applied to the
groundstate eigenfunctions of the reference potentials. Based on this
observation, it is argued that the Local Variational Principle performs better
than the equivalent methods based on the centroid path idea and on the
Gibbs-Bogoliubov-Feynman variational principle, especially in the range of low
temperatures.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, one more section adde
Quantum Fields in a Big Crunch/Big Bang Spacetime
We consider quantum field theory on a spacetime representing the Big
Crunch/Big Bang transition postulated in the ekpyrotic or cyclic cosmologies.
We show via several independent methods that an essentially unique matching
rule holds connecting the incoming state, in which a single extra dimension
shrinks to zero, to the outgoing state in which it re-expands at the same rate.
For free fields in our construction there is no particle production from the
incoming adiabatic vacuum. When interactions are included the total particle
production for fixed external momentum is finite at tree level. We discuss a
formal correspondence between our construction and quantum field theory on de
Sitter spacetime.Comment: 30 pages, RevTex file, five postscript figure file
Modification of the ground state in Sm-Sr manganites by oxygen isotope substitution
The effect of O O isotope substitution on electrical
resistivity and magnetic susceptibility of SmSrMnO manganites
is analyzed. It is shown that the oxygen isotope substitution drastically
affects the phase diagram at the crossover region between the ferromagnetic
metal state and that of antiferromagnetic insulator (0.4 0.6), and
induces the metal-insulator transition at for = 0.475 and 0.5. The nature
of antiferromagnetic insulator phase is discussed.Comment: 4 pages, 3 eps figures, RevTeX, submitted to Phys. Rev. Let
Abelian 2-form gauge theory: superfield formalism
We derive the off-shell nilpotent Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) and
anti-BRST symmetry transformations for {\it all} the fields of a free Abelian
2-form gauge theory by exploiting the geometrical superfield approach to BRST
formalism. The above four (3 + 1)-dimensional (4D) theory is considered on a
(4, 2)-dimensional supermanifold parameterized by the four even spacetime
variables x^\mu (with \mu = 0, 1, 2, 3) and a pair of odd Grassmannian
variables \theta and \bar\theta (with \theta^2 = \bar\theta^2 = 0, \theta
\bar\theta + \bar\theta \theta = 0). One of the salient features of our present
investigation is that the above nilpotent (anti-)BRST symmetry transformations
turn out to be absolutely anticommuting due to the presence of a Curci-Ferrari
(CF) type of restriction. The latter condition emerges due to the application
of our present superfield formalism. The actual CF condition, as is well-known,
is the hallmark of a 4D non-Abelian 1-form gauge theory. We demonstrate that
our present 4D Abelian 2-form gauge theory imbibes some of the key signatures
of the 4D non-Abelian 1-form gauge theory. We briefly comment on the
generalization of our supperfield approach to the case of Abelian 3-form gauge
theory in four (3 + 1)-dimensions of spacetime.Comment: LaTeX file, 23 pages, journal versio
Charmed Exotics in Heavy Ion Collisions
Based on the color-spin interaction in diquarks, we argue that charmed
multiquark hadrons are likely to exist. Because of the appreciable number of
charm quarks produced in central nucleus-nucleus collisions at
ultrarelativistic energies, production of charmed multiquark hadrons is
expected to be enhanced in these collisions. Using both the quark coalescence
model and the statistical hadronization model, we estimate the yield of charmed
tetraquark meson and pentaquark baryon in heavy ion
collisions at RHIC and LHC. We further discuss the decay modes of these charmed
exotic hadrons in order to facilitate their detections in experiments
Effective Actions and Phase Fluctuations in d-wave Superconductors
We study effective actions for order parameter fluctuations at low
temperature in layered d-wave superconductors such as the cuprates. The order
parameter lives on the bonds of a square lattice and has two amplitude and two
phase modes associated with it. The low frequency spectral weights for
amplitude and relative phase fluctuations is determined and found to be
subdominant to quasiparticle contributions. The Goldstone phase mode and its
coupling to density fluctuations in charged systems is treated in a
gauge-invariant manner. The Gaussian phase action is used to study both the
-axis Josephson plasmon and the more conventional in-plane plasmon in the
cuprates. We go beyond the Gaussian theory by deriving a coarse-grained quantum
XY model, which incorporates important cutoff effects overlooked in previous
studies. A variational analysis of this effective model shows that in the
cuprates, quantum effects of phase fluctuations are important in reducing the
zero temperature superfluid stiffness, but thermal effects are small for .Comment: Some numerical estimates corrected and figures changed. to appear in

Acoustic and relaxation processes in supercooled o-ter-phenyl by optical-heterodyne transient grating experiment
The dynamics of the fragile glass-forming o-ter-phenyl is investigated by
time-resolved transient grating experiment with an heterodyne detection
technique in a wide temperature range. We investigated the dynamics processes
of this glass-former over more then 6 decades in time with an excellent
signal/noise. Acoustic, structural and thermal relaxations have been clearly
identify and measured in a time-frequency window not covered by previous
spectroscopic investigations. A detailed comparison with the density response
function, calculated on the basis of generalized hydrodynamics model, has been
worked out
