Novel sulfur and selenium containing bis-α-amino acids from 4-hydroxyproline
The synthesis of new substituted prolines carrying at C-4 a second α-amino acid residue is reported. The amino acid, l-cysteine or l-selenocysteine, is linked to the proline ring through the sulfur or the selenium atom, respectively. The products were prepared with different stereochemistry at C-4, in few and clean high-yielding steps, with suitable protections for solid phase applications. The introduction of both sulfur and selenium atoms at C-4 of the proline ring seems to enhance significantly the cis geometry at the prolyl amide bond
La teoría especial de la relatividad : secuencia de enseñanza y aprendizaje para el nivel de enseñanza secundaria
Se analiza el desarrollo, la implementación y la evaluación de una propuesta didáctica para la enseñanza y el aprendizaje de tópicos de la Teoría Especial de la Relatividad (TER)– sustentada en un marco de referencia que integra aspectos epistemológicos, psicológicos y didácticos – que contempló, además, la elaboración de un material escrito para ser utilizado por docentes y alumnos que contempla las carencias – entendidas como tales desde la perspectiva del marco teórico adoptado– encontradas en los libros de texto usuales. Dicho material incluye, fundamentalmente, el desarrollo de tópicos específicos de la TER, la selección de artículos originales para su lectura y discusión crítica y la propuesta de diversos tipos de actividades (resolución de problemas, ejercicios, etc. ; incluso algunas no convencionales como la elaboración de cuentos e historietas)

Se realiza una revisión crítica de la conceptualización sobre inter y transdisciplinariedad y sus implicaciones para la educación científica. Se diferencian ambos conceptos desde el punto de vista epistemológico y se analizan sus vinculaciones en relación a la Naturaleza de la Ciencia (NdC). Como caso particular de ciencia transdisciplinaria se comentan las propuestas de la sustainability science, que puede contribuir tanto en la educación para la sostenibilidad como para aproximar a los estudiantes a una visión más auténtica de la ciencia y el conocimiento científico
Sibling relationships and family functioning in siblings of early adolescents, adolescents and young adults with autism spectrum disorder
The purpose of the study was to investigate how family functioning (defined as the ability that family members hold to manage stressful events, and intimate and social relationships), the degree to which family members feel happy and fulfilled with each other (called family satisfaction), and the demographical characteristics of siblings (age and gender) impacted on sibling relationships. The Circumplex Model of Marital and Family Systems and Behavioral Systems constituted the theoretical frameworks that guided our study. Eighty-six typically developing adolescents and young adults having a sister or a brother with autism spectrum disorder were enrolled. Results indicated that the youngest age group (early adolescents) reported to engage more frequently in negative behaviors with their siblings with ASD than the two older age groups (middle adolescents and young adults). No significant differences were found among the three age groups regarding behaviors derived from attachment, caregiving and affiliative systems. Family satisfaction and age significantly predicted behaviors during sibling interactions. Suggestions on prevention and intervention programs were discussed in order to prevent parentification among typically developing
siblings and decrease episodes of quarrels and overt conflicts between brothers and sisters with and without AS

A inovação científica e tecnológica do século XX foi esmagadora. Contudo, a nossa experiência docente permite-nos afirmar que as aprendizagens na escola secundária estão longe de acompanhar a evolução que se verifica na sociedade atual. No entanto, já estão a ser incluídos alguns conteúdos de Física Moderna nos currículos oficiais de vários países, parecendo evidenciar uma preocupação em atualizar a preparação dos jovens para o mundo que os rodeia. Neste artigo relatamos um estudo que fizemos acerca dos currículos de Física de alguns países, sobretudo no que diz respeito à Teoria Quântica, a grande invenção do século XX, tentando identificar os conteúdos selecionados e a maneira como estes se integram nas orientações curriculares gerais.In the XXth century, scientific and technological innovation has been overwhelming. profession lead us to believe that studies in High Schools do not follow the evolution of ideas that characterizes
our modern society. However, some contents of Modern Physics are already included in the official curricula
of several countries, which seem to be worried about the improvement of today’s youth training. In this paper
we report a study made about Physics’ curricula in several countries, emphasizing Quantum Theory issues, the
biggest invention of the XXth century, trying to identify the selected subjects selected and the way they fit into
general curricula orientations
Measuring Health Utilities in Children and Adolescents: A Systematic Review of the Literature.
BACKGROUND: The objective of this review was to evaluate the use of all direct and indirect methods used to estimate health utilities in both children and adolescents. Utilities measured pre- and post-intervention are combined with the time over which health states are experienced to calculate quality-adjusted life years (QALYs). Cost-utility analyses (CUAs) estimate the cost-effectiveness of health technologies based on their costs and benefits using QALYs as a measure of benefit. The accurate measurement of QALYs is dependent on using appropriate methods to elicit health utilities. OBJECTIVE: We sought studies that measured health utilities directly from patients or their proxies. We did not exclude those studies that also included adults in the analysis, but excluded those studies focused only on adults. METHODS AND FINDINGS: We evaluated 90 studies from a total of 1,780 selected from the databases. 47 (52%) studies were CUAs incorporated into randomised clinical trials; 23 (26%) were health-state utility assessments; 8 (9%) validated methods and 12 (13%) compared existing or new methods. 22 unique direct or indirect calculation methods were used a total of 137 times. Direct calculation through standard gamble, time trade-off and visual analogue scale was used 32 times. The EuroQol EQ-5D was the most frequently-used single method, selected for 41 studies. 15 of the methods used were generic methods and the remaining 7 were disease-specific. 48 of the 90 studies (53%) used some form of proxy, with 26 (29%) using proxies exclusively to estimate health utilities. CONCLUSIONS: Several child- and adolescent-specific methods are still being developed and validated, leaving many studies using methods that have not been designed or validated for use in children or adolescents. Several studies failed to justify using proxy respondents rather than administering the methods directly to the patients. Involvement of the Endocrine-Disrupting Chemical Bisphenol A (BPA) in Human Placentation
Background: Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) are environmental chemicals/toxicants that humans are exposed to, interfering with the action of multiple hormones. Bisphenol A (BPA) is classified as an EDC with xenoestrogenic activity with potentially adverse effects in reproduction. Currently, a significant knowledge gap remains regarding the complete spectrum of BPA-induced effects on the human placenta. As such, the present study examined the effects of physiologically relevant doses of BPA in vitro. Methods: qRT-PCR, Western blotting, immunofluorescence, ELISA, microarray analyses, and bioinformatics have been employed to study the effects of BPA using nonsyncytialised (non-ST) and syncytialised (ST) BeWo cells. Results: Treatment with 3 nM BPA led to an increase in cell number and altered the phosphorylation status of p38, an effect mediated primarily via the membrane-bound estrogen receptor (GPR30). Nonbiased microarray analysis identified 1195 and 477 genes that were differentially regulated in non-ST BeWo cells, whereas in ST BeWo cells, 309 and 158 genes had altered expression when treated with 3 and 10 nM, respectively. Enriched pathway analyses in non-ST BeWo identified a leptin and insulin overlap (3 nM), methylation pathways (10 nM), and differentiation of white and brown adipocytes (common). In the ST model, most significantly enriched were the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NRF2) pathway (3 nM) and mir-124 predicted interactions with cell cycle and differentiation (10 nM). Conclusion: Collectively, our data offer a new insight regarding BPA effects at the placental level, and provide a potential link with metabolic changes that can have an impact on the developing fetus.Isambard PhD Scholarship, Brunel University Londo
