VV124 (UGC4879): A new transitional dwarf galaxy in the periphery of the Local Group
We present the first resolved-star photometry of VV124 (UGC4879) and find
that this is the most isolated dwarf galaxy in the periphery of the Local
Group. Based on imaging and spectroscopic follow up observations with the 6m
BTA telescope, we resolve VV124 into 1560 stars down to the limiting magnitude
levels of V~25.6 and I~23.9. The young blue stellar populations and emission
gas are found near the core, but noticeably displaced from the center of the
galaxy as traced by dominant evolved red stars. The mean radial velocity
derived from the spectra of two Blue Supergiant stars, an HII region and
unresolved continuum sources is -80+/-10 km/s. The evolved ``red tangle''
stellar populations, which contains the red giant branch (RGB), are identified
at large galactocentric radii. We use the I-band luminosity function to
determine the distance based on the Tip of RGB method, 1.1+/-0.1 Mpc. This is
~10 times closer than the values usually assumed in the literature, and we
provide revised distance dependent parameters. From the mean (V-I) color of the
RGB, we estimate the mean metallicity as [Fe/H]~-1.37 dex. Despite of its
isolated location, the properties of VV124 are clearly not those of a galaxy in
formation, but rather similar to a transitional dIrr/dSph type.Comment: 4 pages, submitted to MNRAS Letter
Anisotropy of the space orientation of radio sources. I: The catalog
A catalog of the extended extragalactic radio sources consisting of 10461
objects is compiled based on the list of radio sources of the FIRST survey. A
total of 1801 objects are identified with galaxies and quasars of the SDSS
survey and the Veron-Veron catalog. The distribution of the position angles of
the axes of radio sources from the catalog is determined, and the probability
that this distribution is equiprobable is shown to be less then 10^(-7). This
result implies that at Z equal to or smaller then 0.5, spatial orientation of
the axes of radio sources is anisotropic at a statistically significant level.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure
Double Bars, Inner Disks, and Nuclear Rings in Early-Type Disk Galaxies
We present results from an imaging survey of an unbiased sample of
thirty-eight early-type (S0--Sa), low-inclination, optically barred galaxies in
the field. Our goal was to find and characterize central stellar and gaseous
structures: secondary bars, inner disks, and nuclear rings. Bars inside bars
are surprisingly common: at least one quarter of the sample galaxies (possibly
as many as 40%) are double-barred, with no preference for Hubble type or the
strength of the primary bar. A typical secondary bar is ~12% of the size of its
primary bar and 240--750 pc in radius. We see no significant effect of
secondary bars on nuclear activity. We also find kiloparsec-scale inner disks
in at least 20% of our sample, almost exclusively in S0 galaxies. These disks
are on average 20% the size of their host bar, and show a wider range of
relative sizes than do secondary bars. Nuclear rings are present in about a
third of our sample. Most are dusty, sites of current or recent star formation,
or both; such rings are preferentially found in Sa galaxies. Three S0 galaxies
(15% of the S0's) appear to have purely stellar nuclear rings, with no evidence
for dust or recent star formation. The fact that these central stellar
structures are so common indicates that the inner regions of early-type barred
galaxies typically contain dynamically cool and disklike structures. This is
especially true for S0 galaxies, where secondary bars, inner disks, and/or

Influence of Gamma-Ray Emission on the Isotopic Composition of Clouds in the Interstellar Medium
We investigate one mechanism of the change in the isotopic composition of
cosmologically distant clouds of interstellar gas whose matter was subjected
only slightly to star formation processes. According to the standard
cosmological model, the isotopic composition of the gas in such clouds was
formed at the epoch of Big Bang nucleosynthesis and is determined only by the
baryon density in the Universe. The dispersion in the available cloud
composition observations exceeds the errors of individual measurements. This
may indicate that there are mechanisms of the change in the composition of
matter in the Universe after the completion of Big Bang nucleosynthesis. We
have calculated the destruction and production rates of light isotopes (D, 3He,
4He) under the influence of photonuclear reactions triggered by the gamma-ray
emission from active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We investigate the destruction and
production of light elements depending on the spectral characteristics of the
gamma-ray emission. We show that in comparison with previous works, taking into
account the influence of spectral hardness on the photonuclear reaction rates
can increase the characteristic radii of influence of the gamma-ray emission
from AGNs by a factor of 2-8. The high gamma-ray luminosities of AGNs observed
in recent years increase the previous estimates of the characteristic radii by
two orders of magnitude. This may suggest that the influence of the emission
from AGNs on the change in the composition of the medium in the immediate
neighborhood (the host galaxy) has been underestimated.Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures, 3 table
Normal Globular Cluster Systems in Massive Low Surface Brightness Galaxies
We present the results of a study of the globular cluster systems of 6
massive spiral galaxies, originally cataloged as low surface brightness
galaxies but here shown to span a wide range of central surface brightness
values, including two intermediate to low surface brightness galaxies. We used
the Advanced Camera for Surveys on board HST to obtain photometry in the F475W
and F775W bands and select sources with photometric and morphological
properties consistent with those of globular clusters. A total of 206
candidates were identified in our target galaxies. From a direct comparison
with the Galactic globular cluster system we derive specific frequency values
for each galaxy that are in the expected range for late-type galaxies. We show
that the globular cluster candidates in all galaxies have properties consistent
with globular cluster systems of previously studied galaxies in terms of
luminosity, sizes and color. We establish the presence of globular clusters in
the two intermediate to low surface brightness galaxies in our sample and show
that their properties do not have any significant deviation from the behavior
observed in the other sample galaxies. Our results are broadly consistent with
a scenario in which low surface brightness galaxies follow roughly the same
evolutionary history as normal (i.e. high surface) brightness galaxies except
at a much lower rate, but require the presence of an initial period of star

An Imaging Survey of Early-Type Barred Galaxies
This paper presents the results of a high-resolution imaging survey, using
both ground-based and Hubble Space Telescope images, of a complete sample of
nearby barred S0--Sa galaxies in the field, with a particular emphasis on
identifying and measuring central structures within the bars: secondary bars,
inner disks, nuclear rings and spirals, and off-plane dust. A discussion of the
frequency and statistical properties of the various types of inner structures
has already been published. Here, we present the data for the individual
galaxies and measurements of their bars and inner structures. We set out the
methods we use to find and measure these structures, and how we discriminate
between them. In particular, we discuss some of the deficiencies of ellipse
fitting of the isophotes, which by itself cannot always distinguish between
bars, rings, spirals, and dust, and which can produce erroneous measurements of

Magnetic Reconnection in Extreme Astrophysical Environments
Magnetic reconnection is a basic plasma process of dramatic rearrangement of
magnetic topology, often leading to a violent release of magnetic energy. It is
important in magnetic fusion and in space and solar physics --- areas that have
so far provided the context for most of reconnection research. Importantly,
these environments consist just of electrons and ions and the dissipated energy
always stays with the plasma. In contrast, in this paper I introduce a new
direction of research, motivated by several important problems in high-energy
astrophysics --- reconnection in high energy density (HED) radiative plasmas,
where radiation pressure and radiative cooling become dominant factors in the
pressure and energy balance. I identify the key processes distinguishing HED
reconnection: special-relativistic effects; radiative effects (radiative
cooling, radiation pressure, and Compton resistivity); and, at the most extreme
end, QED effects, including pair creation. I then discuss the main
astrophysical applications --- situations with magnetar-strength fields
(exceeding the quantum critical field of about 4 x 10^13 G): giant SGR flares
and magnetically-powered central engines and jets of GRBs. Here, magnetic
energy density is so high that its dissipation heats the plasma to MeV
temperatures. Electron-positron pairs are then copiously produced, making the
reconnection layer highly collisional and dressing it in a thick pair coat that
traps radiation. The pressure is dominated by radiation and pairs. Yet,
radiation diffusion across the layer may be faster than the global Alfv\'en
transit time; then, radiative cooling governs the thermodynamics and
reconnection becomes a radiative transfer problem, greatly affected by the
ultra-strong magnetic field. This overall picture is very different from our
traditional picture of reconnection and thus represents a new frontier in

Political brand image: an investigation into the operationalisation of the external orientation of David Cameron’s Conservative brand
This paper seeks to address the limited understanding of how to operationalise the external brand image of a political brand. More specifically, this research critically assesses the transfer potential of the six variables of brand image by Bosch, Venter, Han and Boshoff to deconstruct the UK Conservative Party brand from the perspective of young people aged 18–24 years during the 2010 UK General Election campaign. This research demonstrates the applicability of the six variables otherwise known as the ‘brand image framework’ to the political environment. However, the application of the brand image framework in its original conceptualisation proved problematic. Many of the brand image variables were clarified, rearticulated and simplified to address the political context. This refined conceptualisation provided an in-depth understanding of how to investigate the political brand image of David Cameron’s Conservative Party. This study addresses the paucity of research that operationalises external brand image and provides practitioners and academics within and beyond the context of political branding a mechanism to understand the external orientation of brands. This research may also be used by political and non-political brands as a basis to explore external brand image and compare its consistency with internal brand identity
Political branding: sense of identity or identity crisis? An investigation of the transfer potential of the brand identity prism to the UK Conservative Party
Brands are strategic assets and key to achieving a competitive advantage. Brands can be seen as a heuristic device, encapsulating a series of values that enable the consumer to make quick and efficient choices. More recently, the notion of a political brand and the rhetoric of branding have been widely adopted by many political parties as they seek to differentiate themselves, and this has led to an emerging interest in the idea of the political brand. Therefore, this paper examines the UK Conservative Party brand under David Cameron’s leadership and examines the applicability of Kapferer’s brand identity prism to political branding. This paper extends and operationalises the brand identity prism into a ‘political brand identity network’ which identifies the inter-relatedness of the components of the corporate political brand and the candidate political brand. Crucial for practitioners, this model can demonstrate how the brand is presented and communicated to the electorate and serves as a useful mechanism to identify consistency within the corporate and candidate political brands
Dynamics of Barred Galaxies
Some 30% of disc galaxies have a pronounced central bar feature in the disc
plane and many more have weaker features of a similar kind. Kinematic data
indicate that the bar constitutes a major non-axisymmetric component of the
mass distribution and that the bar pattern tumbles rapidly about the axis
normal to the disc plane. The observed motions are consistent with material
within the bar streaming along highly elongated orbits aligned with the
rotating major axis. A barred galaxy may also contain a spheroidal bulge at its
centre, spirals in the outer disc and, less commonly, other features such as a
ring or lens. Mild asymmetries in both the light and kinematics are quite
common. We review the main problems presented by these complicated dynamical
systems and summarize the effort so far made towards their solution,
