Accumulation, inversion, and depletion layers in SrTiO
We study potential and electron density depth profiles in accumulation,
inversion and depletion layers in crystals with large and nonlinear dielectric
response such as . We describe the lattice dielectric
response using the Landau-Ginzburg free energy expansion. In accumulation and
inversion layers we arrive at new nonlinear dependencies of the width of
the electron gas on applied electric field . Particularly important is the
predicted electron density profile of accumulation layers (including the
interface) , where . We compare this profile with available data and find
satifactory agreement. For a depletion layer we find an unconventional
nonlinear dependence of capacitance on voltage. We also evaluate the role of
spatial dispersion in the dielectric response by adding a gradient term to the
Landau-Ginzburg free energy
Localization Lifetime of a Many-Body System with Periodic Constructed Disorder
We show that, in a many-body system, all particles can be strongly confined
to the initially occupied sites for a time that scales as a high power of the
ratio of the bandwidth of site energies to the hopping amplitude. Such
time-domain formulation is complementary to the formulation of the many-body
localization of all stationary states with a large localization length. The
long localization lifetime is achieved by constructing a periodic sequence of
site energies with a large period in a one-dimensional chain. The scaling of
the localization lifetime is independent of the number of particles for a broad
range of the coupling strength. The analytical results are confirmed by
numerical calculations
Quantum flutter of supersonic particles in one-dimensional quantum liquids
The non-equilibrium dynamics of strongly correlated many-body systems
exhibits some of the most puzzling phenomena and challenging problems in
condensed matter physics. Here we report on essentially exact results on the
time evolution of an impurity injected at a finite velocity into a
one-dimensional quantum liquid. We provide the first quantitative study of the
formation of the correlation hole around a particle in a strongly coupled
many-body quantum system, and find that the resulting correlated state does not
come to a complete stop but reaches a steady state which propagates at a finite
velocity. We also uncover a novel physical phenomenon when the impurity is
injected at supersonic velocities: the correlation hole undergoes long-lived
coherent oscillations around the impurity, an effect we call quantum flutter.
We provide a detailed understanding and an intuitive physical picture of these
intriguing discoveries, and propose an experimental setup where this physics

Serial killing and the postmodern self

In order to contribute to current discussions about self, it is perhaps most effective to map the transformation of a single representation of the self in contemporary culture. As a cultural ‘flashpoint’, the serial killer could provide an apposite analytical focus. Drawing critically on Mark Seltzer's work on serial killers this article interprets serial killing as a form of commodified transgression. In contrast to the modern self, established through state-institutionalized routines, serial killers establish their identities through ecstatic intercourse. These acts of bodily and ethical transgression are facilitated by the use of commodities. In this way, the serial killer represents a self which is consistent with the colonization of interpersonal relations by multinational capital. The impact of malignant nipple discharge cytology (NDc) in surgical management of breast cancer patients
BACKGROUND: The role of nipple discharge cytology (NDc) in the surgical management of breast cancer patients is unclear. We aimed: (i) to evaluate the effect of malignant NDc on the surgical approach to the nipple-areola complex, and (ii) to verify the association between malignant NDc and nipple malignancy. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed a case series of 139 patients with NDc who underwent breast surgery. The clinical and histological findings, types of surgery with emphasis on nipple-areola complex amputation, immunohistochemical phenotypes of the carcinomas and measurements of the tumor-nipple distance were recorded. Additionally, in patients who showed HER2-positive lesions on definitive surgery, we evaluated the HER2 immunocytochemistry of the NDc smears. RESULTS: Thirty-two malignant and 107 benign/borderline NDc diagnoses were identified. All 32 malignant-NDc cases were histologically confirmed as malignant. Thirty borderline/benign-NDc cases were histologically diagnosed as malignant (sensitivity 58%). The majority of the patients with malignant NDc were treated with nipple-areola complex amputations in both the mastectomy and conservative surgery groups (P<0.001, chi251.77). Nipple involvement was strongly associated with HER2-positive ductal carcinoma in-situ (P<0.001, chi211.98). HER2 immunocytochemistry on the NDc revealed a 100% correlation with the immunocytochemistry performed on the surgical tissues. CONCLUSIONS: Malignant NDc influenced surgical management. The association of malignant NDc with nipple involvement is highly related to ductal carcinoma in-situ with HER2 overexpression. In case of HER2 positive NDc, nipple-areola complex involvement is more likely than in HER2 negative cases
Elevated osteoprotegerin is associated with abnormal ankle brachial indices in patients infected with HIV: a cross-sectional study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Patients infected with HIV have an increased risk for accelerated atherosclerosis. Elevated levels of osteoprotegerin, an inflammatory cytokine receptor, have been associated with a high incidence of cardiovascular disease (including peripheral arterial disease, or PAD), acute coronary syndrome, and cardiovascular mortality. The objective of this study was to determine whether PAD is prevalent in an HIV-infected population, and to identify an association with HIV-specific and traditional cardiovascular risk factors, as well as levels of osteoprotegerin.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>One hundred and two patients infected with HIV were recruited in a cross-sectional study. To identify the prevalence of PAD, ankle-brachial indices (ABIs) were measured. Four standard ABI categories were utilized: ≤ 0.90 (definite PAD); 0.91-0.99 (borderline); 1.00-1.30 (normal); and >1.30 (high). Medical history and laboratory measurements were obtained to determine possible risk factors associated with PAD in HIV-infected patients.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The prevalence of PAD (ABI ≤ 0.90) in a young HIV-infected population (mean age: 48 years) was 11%. Traditional cardiovascular risk factors, including advanced age and previous cardiovascular history, as well as elevated C-reactive protein levels, were associated with PAD. Compared with patients with normal ABIs, patients with high ABIs had significantly elevated levels of osteoprotegerin [1428.9 (713.1) pg/ml vs. 3088.6 (3565.9) pg/ml, respectively, p = 0.03].</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>There is a high prevalence of PAD in young HIV-infected patients. A number of traditional cardiovascular risk factors and increased osteoprotegerin concentrations are associated with abnormal ABIs. Thus, early screening and aggressive medical management for PAD may be warranted in HIV-infected patients.</p
Dietary intake and phthalates body burden in boys and girls
BACKGROUND: Phthalates are a group of environmental endocrine disruptors and have been ubiquitously applied in industrial field. Few studies had investigated how dietary intake was related with phthalate body burden in children. To determine the relationship between phthalate body burden and dietary intake among school age children in Shanghai, China. METHODS: Four hundred and thirty schoolchildren aged 8–16 years were recruited in a cross-sectional study with 18 months follow-up in Shanghai, China during 2010–2012. Data of questionnaire-based dietary intake were collected and urinary phthalate concentrations were measured. Associations between frequency of dietary intake and phthalate metabolite concentrations were evaluated by stepwise multiple linear regression model. RESULTS: Positive association was found between mono-butyl phthalate and seafood, and negative associations were found between mono-butyl phthalate and dried fruits and vegetables. Egg consumption showed negative association with all di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate-related metabolites. CONCLUSIONS: Some food types were identified to be associated with phthalate body burden and diet might be a source of phthalate exposure among Chinese schoolchildren

The planar visible fold is a simple singularity in piecewise smooth systems.
In this paper, we consider singularly perturbed systems that limit to this
piecewise smooth bifurcation as the singular perturbation parameter
. Alternatively, these singularly perturbed systems can
be thought of as regularizations of their piecewise counterparts. The main
contribution of the paper is to demonstrate the use of consecutive blowup
transformations in this setting, allowing us to obtain detailed information
about a transition map near the fold under very general assumptions. We apply
this information to prove, for the first time, the existence of a locally
unique saddle-node bifurcation in the case where a limit cycle, in the singular
limit , grazes the discontinuity set. We apply this
result to a mass-spring system on a moving belt described by a Stribeck-type
friction law
