Detection of a persistent-current qubit by resonant activation
We present the implementation of a new scheme to detect the quantum state of
a persistent-current qubit. It relies on the dependency of the measuring
Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID) plasma frequency on the
qubit state, which we detect by resonant activation. With a measurement pulse

Theoretical Analysis of Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering Spectra in LaMnO3
We analyze the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra at the K
edge of Mn in the antiferromagnetic insulating manganite LaMnO3. We make use of
the Keldysh-type Green-function formalism, in which the RIXS intensity is
described by a product of an incident-photon-dependent factor and a
density-density correlation function in the 3d states. We calculate the former
factor using the 4p density of states given by an ab initio band structure
calculation and the latter using a multi-orbital tight-binding model. The
ground state of the model Hamiltonian is evaluated within the Hartree-Fock
approximation. Correlation effects are treated within the random phase
approximation (RPA). We obtain the RIXS intensity in a wide range of
energy-loss 2-15 eV. The spectral shape is strongly modified by the RPA
correlation, showing good agreement with the experiments. The
incident-photon-energy dependence also agrees well with the experiments. The
present mechanism that the RIXS spectra arise from band-to-band transitions to
screen the core-hole potential is quite different from the orbiton picture
previously proposed, enabling a comprehensive understanding of the RIXS

Dephasing of a superconducting qubit induced by photon noise
We have studied the dephasing of a superconducting flux-qubit coupled to a
DC-SQUID based oscillator. By varying the bias conditions of both circuits we
were able to tune their effective coupling strength. This allowed us to measure
the effect of such a controllable and well-characterized environment on the
qubit coherence. We can quantitatively account for our data with a simple model
in which thermal fluctuations of the photon number in the oscillator are the
limiting factor. In particular, we observe a strong reduction of the dephasing
rate whenever the coupling is tuned to zero. At the optimal point we find a

Relaxation and Dephasing in a Flux-qubit
We report detailed measurements of the relaxation and dephasing time in a
flux-qubit measured by a switching DC SQUID. We studied their dependence on the
two important circuit bias parameters: the externally applied magnetic flux and
the bias current through the SQUID in two samples. We demonstrate two
complementary strategies to protect the qubit from these decoherence sources.
One consists in biasing the qubit so that its resonance frequency is stationary
with respect to the control parameters ({\it optimal point}) ; the second
consists in {\it decoupling} the qubit from current noise by chosing a proper
bias current through the SQUID. At the decoupled optimal point, we measured

Ginzburg-Landau theory of superconductors with short coherence length
We consider Fermions in two dimensions with an attractive interaction in the
singlet d-wave channel of arbitrary strength. By means of a
Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation a statistical Ginzburg-Landau theory is
derived, which describes the smooth crossover from a weak-coupling BCS
superconductor to a condensate of composite Bosons. Adjusting the interaction
strength to the observed slope of H_c2 at T_c in the optimally doped high-T_c
compounds YBCO and BSCCO, we determine the associated values of the
Ginzburg-Landau correlation length xi and the London penetration depth lambda.
The resulting dimensionless ratio k_F xi(0) approx 5-8 and the Ginzburg-Landau
parameter kappa=lambda xi approx 90-100 agree well with the experimentally
observed values. These parameters indicate that the optimally doped materials

BMP2 commitment to the osteogenic lineage involves activation of Runx2 by DLX3 and a homeodomain transcriptional network
Several homeodomain (HD) proteins are critical for skeletal patterning and respond directly to BMP2 as an early step in bone formation. RUNX2, the earliest transcription factor proven essential for commitment to osteoblastogenesis, is also expressed in response to BMP2. However, there is a gap in our knowledge of the regulatory cascade from BMP2 signaling to the onset of osteogenesis. Here we show that BMP2 induces DLX3, a homeodomain protein that activates Runx2 gene transcription. Small interfering RNA knockdown studies in osteoblasts validate that DLX3 is a potent regulator of Runx2. Furthermore in Runx2 null cells, DLX3 forced expression suffices to induce transcription of Runx2, osteocalcin, and alkaline phosphatase genes, thus defining DLX3 as an osteogenic regulator independent of RUNX2. Our studies further show regulation of the Runx2 gene by several homeodomain proteins: MSX2 and CDP/cut repress whereas DLX3 and DLX5 activate endogenous Runx2 expression and promoter activity in non-osseous cells and osteoblasts. These HD proteins exhibit distinct temporal expression profiles during osteoblast differentiation as well as selective association with Runx2 chromatin that is related to Runx2 transcriptional activity and recruitment of RNA polymerase II. Runx2 promoter mutagenesis shows that multiple HD elements control expression of Runx2 in relation to the stages of osteoblast maturation. Our studies establish mechanisms for commitment to the osteogenic lineage directly through BMP2 induction of HD proteins DLX3 and DLX5 that activate Runx2, thus delineating a transcriptional regulatory pathway mediating osteoblast differentiation. We propose that the three homeodomain proteins MSX2, DLX3, and DLX5 provide a key series of molecular switches that regulate expression of Runx2 throughout bone formation. <br/
Freezing of a Stripe Liquid
The existence of a stripe-liquid phase in a layered nickelate,
La(1.725)Sr(0.275)NiO(4), is demonstrated through neutron scattering
measurements. We show that incommensurate magnetic fluctuations evolve
continuously through the charge-ordering temperature, although an abrupt
decrease in the effective damping energy is observed on cooling through the
transition. The energy and momentum dependence of the magnetic scattering are
parametrized with a damped-harmonic-oscillator model describing overdamped
spin-waves in the antiferromagnetic domains defined instantaneously by charge

Lipid-soluble Vitamins A, D, and E in HIV-Infected Pregnant women in Tanzania.
There is limited published research examining lipid-soluble vitamins in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected pregnant women, particularly in resource-limited settings. This is an observational analysis of 1078 HIV-infected pregnant women enrolled in a trial of vitamin supplementation in Tanzania. Baseline data on sociodemographic and anthropometric characteristics, clinical signs and symptoms, and laboratory parameters were used to identify correlates of low plasma vitamin A (<0.7 micromol/l), vitamin D (<80 nmol/l) and vitamin E (<9.7 micromol/l) status. Binomial regression was used to estimate risk ratios and 95% confidence intervals. Approximately 35, 39 and 51% of the women had low levels of vitamins A, D and E, respectively. Severe anemia (hemoglobin <85 g/l; P<0.01), plasma vitamin E (P=0.02), selenium (P=0.01) and vitamin D (P=0.02) concentrations were significant correlates of low vitamin A status in multivariate models. Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR) was independently related to low vitamin A status in a nonlinear manner (P=0.01). The correlates of low vitamin D status were CD8 cell count (P=0.01), high ESR (ESR >81 mm/h; P<0.01), gestational age at enrollment (nonlinear; P=0.03) and plasma vitamins A (P=0.02) and E (P=0.01). For low vitamin E status, the correlates were money spent on food per household per day (P<0.01), plasma vitamin A concentration (nonlinear; P<0.01) and a gestational age <16 weeks at enrollment (P<0.01). Low concentrations of lipid-soluble vitamins are widely prevalent among HIV-infected women in Tanzania and are correlated with other nutritional insufficiencies. Identifying HIV-infected persons at greater risk of poor nutritional status and infections may help inform design and implementation of appropriate interventions
Cell-free (RNA) and cell-associated (DNA) HIV-1 and postnatal transmission through breastfeeding
<p>Introduction - Transmission through breastfeeding remains important for mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) in resource-limited settings. We quantify the relationship between cell-free (RNA) and cell-associated (DNA) shedding of HIV-1 virus in breastmilk and the risk of postnatal HIV-1 transmission in the first 6 months postpartum.</p>
<p>Materials and Methods - Thirty-six HIV-positive mothers who transmitted HIV-1 by breastfeeding were matched to 36 non-transmitting HIV-1 infected mothers in a case-control study nested in a cohort of HIV-infected women. RNA and DNA were quantified in the same breastmilk sample taken at 6 weeks and 6 months. Cox regression analysis assessed the association between cell-free and cell-associated virus levels and risk of postnatal HIV-1 transmission.</p>
<p>Results - There were higher median levels of cell-free than cell-associated HIV-1 virus (per ml) in breastmilk at 6 weeks and 6 months. Multivariably, adjusting for antenatal CD4 count and maternal plasma viral load, at 6 weeks, each 10-fold increase in cell-free or cell-associated levels (per ml) was significantly associated with HIV-1 transmission but stronger for cell-associated than cell-free levels [2.47 (95% CI 1.33–4.59) vs. aHR 1.52 (95% CI, 1.17–1.96), respectively]. At 6 months, cell-free and cell-associated levels (per ml) in breastmilk remained significantly associated with HIV-1 transmission but was stronger for cell-free than cell-associated levels [aHR 2.53 (95% CI 1.64–3.92) vs. 1.73 (95% CI 0.94–3.19), respectively].</p>
<p>Conclusions - The findings suggest that cell-associated virus level (per ml) is more important for early postpartum HIV-1 transmission (at 6 weeks) than cell-free virus. As cell-associated virus levels have been consistently detected in breastmilk despite antiretroviral therapy, this highlights a potential challenge for resource-limited settings to achieve the UNAIDS goal for 2015 of eliminating vertical transmission. More studies would further knowledge on mechanisms of HIV-1 transmission and help develop more effective drugs during lactation.</p>
