CO adsorption on neutral iridium clusters
The adsorption of carbon monoxide on neutral iridium clusters in the size
range of n = 3 to 21 atoms is investigated with infrared multiple photon
dissociation spectroscopy. For each cluster size only a single v(CO) band is
present with frequencies in the range between 1962 cm-1 (n = 8) and 1985 cm-1
(n = 18) which can be attributed to an atop binding geometry. This behaviour is
compared to the CO binding geometries on clusters of other group 9 and 10
transition metals as well as to that on extended surfaces. The preference of Ir
for atop binding is rationalized by relativistic effects on the electronic
structure of the later 5d metals
Romanian wild boars and Mangalitza pigs have a European ancestry and harbour genetic signatures compatible with past population bottlenecks

POSDRU/159/1.5/S/132765We aimed to analyse the genetic diversity of Romanian wild boars and to compare it with that from other wild boar and pig populations from Europe and Asia. Partial sequencing of the mitochondrial encoded cytochrome b (MT-CYB) gene from 36 Romanian wild boars and 36 domestic pigs (Mangalitza, Bazna and Vietnamese breeds) showed that the diversity of Romanian wild boars and Mangalitza pigs is fairly reduced, and that most of the members of these two populations share a common MT-CYB haplotype. Besides, in strong contrast with the Bazna animals, Romanian wild boars and Mangalitza swine did not carry Asian variants at the MT-CYB locus. The autosomal genotyping of 18 Romanian wild boars with the Illumina Porcine SNP60 BeadChip revealed that their genetic background is fundamentally European, even though signs of a potential Near Eastern ancestry (∼25%) were detectable at K = 4 (the most significant number of clusters), but not at higher K-values. Admixture analysis also showed that two wild boars are of a hybrid origin, which could be explained by the mating of feral animals with domestic pigs. Finally, a number of Romanian wild boars displayed long runs of homozygosity, an observation that is consistent with the occurrence of past population bottlenecks and the raise of inbreeding possibly due to overhunting or to the outbreak of infectious diseases
A comprehensive analysis of the genetic diversity and environmental adaptability in worldwide Merino and Merino-derived sheep breeds
BACKGROUND: To enhance and extend the knowledge about the global historical and phylogenetic relationships between Merino and Merino-derived breeds, 19 populations were genotyped with the OvineSNP50 BeadChip specifically for this study, while an additional 23 populations from the publicly available genotypes were retrieved. Three complementary statistical tests, Rsb (extended haplotype homozygosity between-populations), XP-EHH (cross-population extended haplotype homozygosity), and runs of homozygosity (ROH) islands were applied to identify genomic variants with potential impact on the adaptability of Merino genetic type in two contrasting climate zones. RESULTS: The results indicate that a large part of the Merino's genetic relatedness and admixture patterns are explained by their genetic background and/or geographic origin, followed by local admixture. Multi-dimensional scaling, Neighbor-Net, Admixture, and TREEMIX analyses consistently provided evidence of the role of Australian, Rambouillet and German strains in the extensive gene introgression into the other Merino and Merino-derived breeds. The close relationship between Iberian Merinos and other South-western European breeds is consistent with the Iberian origin of the Merino genetic type, with traces from previous contributions of other Mediterranean stocks. Using Rsb and XP-EHH approaches, signatures of selection were detected spanning four genomic regions located on Ovis aries chromosomes (OAR) 1, 6 and 16, whereas two genomic regions on OAR6, that partially overlapped with the previous ones, were highlighted by ROH islands. Overall, the three approaches identified 106 candidate genes putatively under selection. Among them, genes related to immune response were identified via the gene interaction network. In addition, several candidate genes were found, such as LEKR1, LCORL, GHR, RBPJ, BMPR1B, PPARGC1A, and PRKAA1, related to morphological, growth and reproductive traits, adaptive thermogenesis, and hypoxia responses. CONCLUSIONS: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first comprehensive dataset that includes most of the Merino and Merino-derived sheep breeds raised in different regions of the world. The results provide an in-depth picture of the genetic makeup of the current Merino and Merino-derived breeds, highlighting the possible selection pressures associated with the combined effect of anthropic and environmental factors. The study underlines the importance of Merino genetic types as invaluable resources of possible adaptive diversity in the context of the occurring climate changes
Real Wage Responsiveness to Unemployment in Spain: Asymmetries Along the Business Cycle
We estimate real wage cyclicality in the period compressed between 1987 and 2013 using a large administrative dataset of workers in Spain. Real wages are weakly procyclical in Spain and focusing on differences in different phases of the business cycle, we find that differences across expansions and recessions are significant, with an even lower real wage cyclicality in recessions. Furthermore, higher levels of unemployment do not translate into additional real wages adjustments when the economy is contracting, while lower levels of unemployment during expansions have incremental effects on wage elasticity. This general result holds after accounting for differences in tenure, type of contract and age categories. Nevertheless, wages of newly-hired workers are the most sensitive to the business cycle and exhibit the lowest asymmetric pattern between expansions and recessions. At the other end, wages of workers with more than six years of tenure can be characterized as the most protected against economic downturns. The same is true for fixed-term vs. permanent workers, as well as for young vs. older workers
Catalyst poisoning in the conversion of CO and N
Pt4- catalyses the conversion of CO and
N2O to CO2 and N2 in the gas phase, as observed by Fourier
transform ion cyclotron (FT-ICR) mass spectrometry. The partial pressures of
CO and N2O determine the extent of poisoning and the turnover numbers
that can be achieved. The catalytic conversion terminates as soon as two CO
are adsorbed on the cluster. With N2O, the reactivity of
Pt4O2- and Pt4O3- is reduced to 41% and
34% compared to Pt4O-, respectively, and with
Pt4O4- this value is reduced to 1%. In contrast,
Pt4+ shows no apparent catalytic activity. Density functional
theory calculations of Pt4+/- with CO and N2O adsorbates
reveal significantly different stabilities of the reaction intermediates for
the different charge states
Generation of C6H4+ by laser vaporization of magnesium with o-C6H4F2 in argon carrier gas
A route to efficient generation of C6H4+, potentially the benzyne radical cation, is presented. Laser vaporization of Mg+. and supersonic expansion in helium doped with o-, m-, or p-C6H4F2 yields, among other ions, o-, m-, p-C6H4F2Mg+.. complexes, but no C6H4+.. Collision-induced dissociation experiments show that the o-C6H4F2Mg+. complex can be converted into C6H4+. in a mildly energetic collision, with a center-of-mass energy around 1-2 eV. These conditions can also be reached in the ion source when argon is used as a carrier gas. In this way, mass spectra containing the desired m/z 76 peak, i.e. C6H4+., are obtained.
