Post-graduate medical education in public health: The case of Italy and a call for action
Public health technical expertise is of crucial importance to inform decision makers\u2019
action in the field of health and its broader determinants. Improving education and
training of public health professionals for both practice and research is the starting
point to strengthen the role of public health so that current health challenges can
be efficiently tackled. At the Association of Schools of Public Health in the European
Region (ASPHER) Deans\u2019 & Directors\u2019 2017 Annual Retreat, we presented the structure
and management of public health training system in Italy, and we reported recent data
on Italian public health specialists\u2019 educational experience, employment opportunities
and job satisfaction. Public health training in Italy is implemented in the context
of the post-graduate medical education residency programme in Hygiene and
Preventive Medicine, delivered by 34 University-based Schools of Public Health.
We report relatively high employment rates across the county and wide
spectrum of career opportunities for young public health specialists. However,
job security is low and training expectations only partially met. We call upon
other Schools of Public Health to scale up the survey within the broad ASPHER
community in a shared and coordinated action of systematically collecting useful
data that can inform the development of public health education and training
models, their implementation and fruitful interaction with population health,
health systems and services
MEG Upgrade Proposal
We propose the continuation of the MEG experiment to search for the charged
lepton flavour violating decay (cLFV) \mu \to e \gamma, based on an upgrade of
the experiment, which aims for a sensitivity enhancement of one order of
magnitude compared to the final MEG result, down to the
level. The key features of this new MEG upgrade are an increased rate
capability of all detectors to enable running at the intensity frontier and
improved energy, angular and timing resolutions, for both the positron and
photon arms of the detector. On the positron-side a new low-mass, single
volume, high granularity tracker is envisaged, in combination with a new highly
segmented, fast timing counter array, to track positron from a thinner stopping
target. The photon-arm, with the largest liquid xenon (LXe) detector in the
world, totalling 900 l, will also be improved by increasing the granularity at
the incident face, by replacing the current photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) with a
larger number of smaller photosensors and optimizing the photosensor layout
also on the lateral faces. A new DAQ scheme involving the implementation of a
new combined readout board capable of integrating the diverse functions of
digitization, trigger capability and splitter functionality into one condensed
unit, is also under development. We describe here the status of the MEG
experiment, the scientific merits of the upgrade and the experimental methods

Search for the Supersymmetric Partner of the Top-Quark in Collisions at
We report on a search for the supersymmetric partner of the top quark (stop)
produced in events using of
collisions at recorded with the Collider Detector at
Fermilab. In the case of a light stop squark, the decay of the top quark into
stop plus the lightest supersymmetric particle (LSP) could have a significant
branching ratio. The observed events are consistent with Standard Model production and decay. Hence, we set limits on the branching ratio of
the top quark decaying into stop plus LSP, excluding branching ratios above 45%
for a LSP mass up to 40 {\rm GeV/c}.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure
Measurement of the B0 anti-B0 oscillation frequency using l- D*+ pairs and lepton flavor tags
The oscillation frequency Delta-md of B0 anti-B0 mixing is measured using the
partially reconstructed semileptonic decay anti-B0 -> l- nubar D*+ X. The data
sample was collected with the CDF detector at the Fermilab Tevatron collider
during 1992 - 1995 by triggering on the existence of two lepton candidates in
an event, and corresponds to about 110 pb-1 of pbar p collisions at sqrt(s) =
1.8 TeV. We estimate the proper decay time of the anti-B0 meson from the
measured decay length and reconstructed momentum of the l- D*+ system. The
charge of the lepton in the final state identifies the flavor of the anti-B0
meson at its decay. The second lepton in the event is used to infer the flavor
of the anti-B0 meson at production. We measure the oscillation frequency to be
Delta-md = 0.516 +/- 0.099 +0.029 -0.035 ps-1, where the first uncertainty is

Implementation of a Deformation Model for Pressure Tubes under Irradiation
Current semi-empiric deformation models for in-reactor deformation of Zr2.5Nb CANDU pressure tubes are based on the physical model of Christodoulou et al. (Proc. 11th Int. Symp. Zirc. Nucl. Ind., ASTM STP 1295 (1996), p. 518) and consider material texture effects via the code'SELFPOLY' introduced by Tomé et al. (Philos. Mag. A67 (1993), p. 917) and Turner et al. (Philos. Mag. A 79 (1999), p. 2505). This code makes use of a 'tangent' self-consistent approach proposed by Molinari et al. (Acta Metall. 35 (1987), p. 2983) to obtain the overall response of a viscoplastic polycrystalline system in terms of the local response of the single crystals and their microstructuralmorphology. More recently, Liu and Ponte Castañeda (J. Mech. Phys. Solids 52 (2004), p. 467)derived a 'generalized-secant' self-consistent approach which has been found to improve substantially on the earlier 'tangent' approach in some cases. In this work we study the influence of the linearization procedure on the predictions for the deformation of pressure tubes. The calculations are carried out by means of the VPSC code of Lebensohn et al. (14th International Conference on Textures of Materials 495-497 (2005), p. 955). It is found that the predictions based on the 'tangent' and 'generalized-secant' approaches are quite similar, and hence the use of a 'generalized-secant' approach is not recommended for this particular problem in view of its higher computational cost. Moreover, analyzing the current in-reactor deformation model reviewed by Holt (J. Nucl. Mat. 372 (2008), p. 182), a restriction in the stress state was found. The stress tensor components are projected to the material axes that are not guaranteed to be principal, for that reason the constitutive laws are not valid for a general stress state neglecting in particular the gravity forces. Based on the same constitutive law structure, a modification is proposed that accounts for a general stress state via coupling VPSC-FEM codes.Publicado en: Mecánica Computacional vol. New constraint on the existence of the mu+-> e+ gamma decay
The analysis of a combined data set, totaling 3.6 \times 10^14 stopped muons
on target, in the search for the lepton flavour violating decay mu^+ -> e^+
gamma is presented. The data collected by the MEG experiment at the Paul
Scherrer Institut show no excess of events compared to background expectations
and yield a new upper limit on the branching ratio of this decay of 5.7 \times
10^-13 (90% confidence level). This represents a four times more stringent
limit than the previous world best limit set by MEG.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, a version accepted in Phys. Rev. Let
Measurement of the radiative decay of polarized muons in the MEG experiment
We studied the radiative muon decay by
using for the first time an almost fully polarized muon source. We identified a
large sample (~13000) of these decays in a total sample of 1.8x10^14 positive
muon decays collected in the MEG experiment in the years 2009--2010 and
measured the branching ratio B() =
(6.03+-0.14(stat.)+-0.53(sys.))x10^-8 for E_e > 45 MeV and E_{\gamma} > 40 MeV,
consistent with the Standard Model prediction. The precise measurement of this
decay mode provides a basic tool for the timing calibration, a normalization
channel, and a strong quality check of the complete MEG experiment in the

The MEG detector for decay search
The MEG (Mu to Electron Gamma) experiment has been running at the Paul
Scherrer Institut (PSI), Switzerland since 2008 to search for the decay \meg\
by using one of the most intense continuous beams in the world. This
paper presents the MEG components: the positron spectrometer, including a thin
target, a superconducting magnet, a set of drift chambers for measuring the
muon decay vertex and the positron momentum, a timing counter for measuring the
positron time, and a liquid xenon detector for measuring the photon energy,
position and time. The trigger system, the read-out electronics and the data
acquisition system are also presented in detail. The paper is completed with a
description of the equipment and techniques developed for the calibration in
time and energy and the simulation of the whole apparatus.Comment: 59 pages, 90 figure
Influence of carob flour ingredients on wheat-based systems
Carob flour and its main constituents have been shown to possess nutritional benefits and might be considered as low-cost competitor to other food ingredients in enriched food products.
In this study, we performed a DSC characterization of the thermal properties of carob flour and derived fractions (carob protein fraction and locust bean gum) at various moisture percentages, aiming at understanding their behaviour in more complex matrices. Furthermore, wheat/carob ingredient blends were investigated at different moisture content and components ratios to asses and dissect the interplay between carob and wheat flour macromolecules following their thermal transitions.
The results indicated that only the carob protein fraction is adequate as ingredient for enriched wheat-based baking products since it does not significantly influence the water partition between the starchy and protein phases. Such a prediction was confirmed by technological trials, i.e., by preparing and comparing reference wheat loafs and ones enriched with 5% w/w of carob protein
The DSC monitoring of oil melting to follow the oil curing
The drying of an oil paint is due to the polyunsaturations of the oil in the binder. Polyunsaturated oils dry trough an autoxidation process in which the double bonds of linolenic and linoleic acids naturally react with the oxygen present in the atmosphere. The gradual conversion of the liquid oil through a soft gel to a rubbery solid occurs as a result of a multistep free radical chain reaction. During the propagation step, hydroperoxides are formed. A method frequently used to follow the oil curing is the DSC monitoring of the peroxide decomposition peak during time. Since the oil polymerization affects its crystallinity, we propose here an altemative method to asses the oil curing. The melting peak of linseed oil samples is measured at different times of curing and compared with the pro\ufb01le of the peroxide decomposition peak over time. The comparison shows that the two phenomena are strongly correlated and that, when the maximum of the peroxide content is reached, the melting peak disappears. The study of the DSC melting peak is therefore proposed as a valid alternative tool to monitor the curing of an oil paint
