    An open controlled comparative research was conducted on 263 children with acute respiratory infection (ARI) in order to evaluate the clinical effectiveness, acceptability and safety of plant based preparation that contains ivy leaf extract. It was established that prescribing the preparation during the first days of disease reduced the duration of dry and inefficient cough, improved sputum rheology and bronchial tree drainage function, reduced bronchial obstruction intensity, reduced the need for prescribing bronchial spasmolitics less necessary and decreased Staybin term. Compared to other antibcough medicines, plant based preparation with ivy leaf extract has quicker effect (effective on the 1st–3rd day).Key words: children, acute respiratory infections, cough, treatment

    Fermentation Conditions and Media Optimization for Isocitric Acid Production from Ethanol by Yarrowia lipolytica

    Isocitric acid exists in the form of four stereoisomers, of which only the threo-Ds-form (ICA) is a natural active compound, an intermediate of Krebs cycle, and suitable for nutritional and pharmaceutical use. In this paper, we propose a method for ICA production from ethanol by yeast Yarrowia lipolytica. The effects of temperature, pH of the medium, and aeration on the growth of the producer Y. lipolytica VKM Y-2373 and synthesis of ICA were studied. An optimal fermentation regime, which ensures a good growth of the producer and directed synthesis of the target product, was determined. The producer is advised to carry out cultivation at 29°C and various pH of the medium and the oxygen concentration (pH 5 and pO2 20-25% (of saturation) during the growth period and pH 6 and pO2 50-55% (of saturation) during the acid formation) on a nutrient medium containing an increased content of zinc (0.6 mg/L), iron (1.2 mg/L), and 30 mM itaconic acid (inhibitor of isocitrate lyase-the key enzyme of ICA metabolism) should also be introduced into the nutrition medium. Such fermentation production mode provides 90.5 g/L ICA with process selectivity of 80%, mass yield (YICA) of 0.77 g/g, and energy yield (ηICA) of 0.278 g/g. © 2018 Svetlana V. Kamzolova et al

The aim of this study was to identify the effect of selenium on physical performance in elite athletes during control and preparatory training mesocycles. Materials and methods. This research involved 44 highly skilled male track and field athletes aged 19.9 ± 0.21 years; 20 athletes were included in the control group. Athletes in the experimental group (12 athletes) took the selenium-containing supplement at a 50 μg selenium dose per day for 21 days of intensive training loads; the same number of athletes made up the no-treatment group. The control group was examined once, while the experimental and no-treatment groups were examined twice: at the beginning of the study and after 21 days of intensive training. Heart rate was recorded, blood pressure was measured, and the heart rate variability parameters and overall physical performance were determined by the PWC170 test. Results. The results of the PWC170 test increased 1.22 times (P < 0.05), the Mo index by 1.1 times (P < 0.05) and the ΔRR by 1.44 (P = 0.03) times. A 1.72-fold decrease in the stress index (P = 0.01) was recorded. Conclusion. Taking a selenium-containing supplement supported physical performance and heart rate regulation in elite athletes during control and preparatory training mesocycles. Цель. Целью данного исследования было изучение влияния селена на физическую работоспособность элитных спортсменов в течение контрольных и подготовительных тренировоч- ных мезоциклов. Материалы и методы. В исследовании приняли участие 44 профессиональных легкоатлета в возрасте 19,9 ± 0,21 года. В контрольную группу вошли 20 человек. Спортсмены экспериментальной группы (12 спортсменов) принимали добавку с содержанием селена в дозе 50 мкг в сутки в течение 21 дня интенсивных тренировочных нагрузок, такое же количество спортсменов вошло в группу участников, не получавших добавку. Спортсменов контрольной группы обследовали однократно, а спортсменов экспериментальной группы и группы без добавки – дважды: в начале исследования и через 21 день интенсивных тренировок. В ходе исследования регистрировали частоту сердечных сокращений, измеряли артериальное давление, определяли параметры вариабельности сердечного ритма и оценивали общую физическую работоспособность с помощью теста PWC170. Результаты. Показатели теста PWC170 выросли в 1,22 раза (P < 0,05), индекс Mo – в 1,1 раза (P < 0,05), а ΔRR – в 1,44 (P = 0,03) раза. Зарегистрировали снижение индекса стресса в 1,72 раза (P = 0,01). Заключение. Прием селенсодержащей добавки способствовал поддержанию физической работоспособности и регуляции сердечного ритма у спортсменов высокой квалификации в течение контрольных и подготовительных тренировочных мезоциклов
